wow - big move

they get Abreu - excellent hitter - big contract

and Lidle - consistent 4th/5th starter

and they give up seems like middle/upper middle prospects
CJ Henry - former # 1 draft pick plus

What a lineup the Yanks will have when Matsui and Sheffield come back

Don't like the Yanks (Mets fan) but this is a good move for them

What's Boston gonna do?

From my prespective as a sox fan I'm not bothered by this trade at all.

I think lidle will help them but Abreu is really going to replace Sheffield next yr and what I see is the yankees spending more $ for a player that will be less productive for them than Sheff.

No one knows if Sheffield's wrist will completely heal in time to help the Yankees get to the playoffs. His $13 million option likely will not be picked up for next year so any team can choose to sign Sheffield (38 years old) in 2007. Abreu, 32 years old, gets $15 million next yr and has an option in 2008 for $16 million. Only time will tell if this was a good deal for the Yankees but any time you don't have to give up any one on your current roster for a decent pitcher with playoff experience and an all-star/gold glove outfielder it appears to be a great deal for the Yankees.

If the Red Sox were able to take on additional payroll they would have done this deal in a New York minute. Replacing Nixon/Pena/Kapler with Abreu would be every Sox fans dream come true.

It's the end of the world as we know it!

I was depressed by Schillings crappy pitching last night - now I'm really depressed...oh wait, just 11 days, 4 hours and 56 minutes until the Patriots play there first exhibition game...

Hallelujah! I'm happy again!

Flyingfree I agree with you that the yankees didn't have to give up much so in that sense its a good deal.

I think you're wrong about the sox not being able to pick up the additional payroll. They would have taken on Andrew Jones contract which is close to Abreu's had that deal worked out.

The problem for the sox with Abreu is that looking at the yr he is having he is vastly overpaid.

He needs to put up much better numbers to earn his 15 mil.

naked gent, we will never know who the Red Sox were targeting in trade talks but I suspect it was for a front line pitcher rather than a power hitting outfielder like Andruw Jones. The Sox chose to keep their roster as is rather than offer some of their minor league players. We both know that pitching and defense win games and no can find fault with the Sox defense. Apparently, the Red Sox front office was pleased enough with their current pitching staff and determined that no upgrades were needed. I have a feeling that some Sox fans might not see it that way.

We can at least agree that the final 60 games of the season will be exciting. Yankee fans and Red Sox fans would have it no other way.

Bobby Abreu is a little overrated...just my opinion.

I agree. Let's see how he does in NY.

I'm hoping Lidle works out. If so, I really like the Yanks chances because ya know the Yanks are gonna put runs up on the board.

In the last two months, it's all about starting pitching.
