So I have this other computer. And I installed Ubuntu over Windows by accident. Anyway, I have decided to sell it, and I am trying to put XP on it. But the computer wont recognize the disk when I go to F12 and blah blah.

Is there a way to open the .ISO in Ubuntu, or if I could possibly sell this computer with Ubuntu still on it for $300?

Not sure what you mean by "open the .ISO in Ubuntu". You mean you have an iso of your Windows XP installation disk on a CD? (That would explain why the computer wouldn't boot XP from your CD - iso files are not bootable). If that's what you mean, just copy the iso file from the CD to the computer's hard drive with the ubuntu file manager (all 800 MB).

Then put a blank CD disk in your CD burner. Navigate to the XP iso file that you copied to the hard drive earlier. Right click on the file. Select "Write to disk..." from the menu. Follow the prompts. Ubuntu will burn a bootable XP installation CD from the iso file on the hard drive.

IMHO, you're better off selling the computer with ubuntu. I don't think XP will really add to the value, since everyone out there already has several legitimate and a few dozen bootleg copies of XP they could install, anyway. And there's a tiny chance that selling a computer with a shady copy of XP could get you in trouble. What your customers may appreciate, however, is if you give them copies of XP drivers for the hardware in the computer.

I am selling it on craigslist, and I don't think a lot of people who are gonna shell out 300 bucks is gonna want to use some OS they have never heard of.

but thank you. ubuntu has been asking me to do this. now i just need to get a blank in there.

...meh, it doesnt stop that many people. just look at craigslist.

They'll think you have the Boston Celtics on your computer.

so um, my installation of XP was successful, but it can't read my modem. I stick my ethernet cable in and nothing.

I did have to delete a partition to get XP to install. sooo ummmm???????

I stuck the ethernet cable in the ethernet port on the back on my computer.

...i am trying to remember if this is the computer i had to add the ethernet card too...

BlackWolf, the problem is that you lack the XP driver for the ethernet card. That was not a problem in ubuntu, because ubuntu includes the drivers for most hardware on the installation CD. XP does not. Most of the time, you need a separate disk from the manufacturer of each hardware device on the computer (graphics card, sound card, ethernet card, modem, etc.) to get XP installed and running properly. (That's why I mentioned above that your customers might appreciate your giving them copies of the XP drivers for the hardware devices in the computer).

If you don't have the drivers, they can usually be downloaded from the manufacturer's website. But you need to know what hardware you've got, of course.

i'll put it on craigslist as a ubuntu computer. if someone wants to buy it, i will put ubuntu back on the computer.

If the ethernet card is the only thing that's not working, it should not be that difficult to figure out what card it is, and get the driver for it.

If you click Start>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager you should get a list of whatever hardware devices Windows has been able to identify. If XP does not have a driver for the hardware device, it will place an exclamation mark next to the name of that device.

If you've get a bunch of exclamation marks, then you need a bunch of drivers.
