You have earned those days off. You don't have to make a decision until you talk to your DM. I wouldn't tell him you're taking the days off, but perhaps I would tell him that you're burning out and need a few days. Ask him how inconvenient it would be if you did and whether or not you would be putting your job in jeopardy.

I say that you go to him and say "Look... I've taken less time off than anyone this year... I know you're looking at downsizing, but I'm beat and I need a break.. is that going to affect anything?"

He'll say no, of course, but it'll also remind him how hard a worker you are.

Dude - This might not help but if they are going to downsize ya, it is going to happen whether you take the days off or not. Take the days and recharge, you are likely to perorm much better if you do. Any company that uses the fact that you took your entitled holiday as a reason to "downsize" you, would be treading a very dangerous line with regards to employment law and I would keep any evidence of this behaviour ----- just in case.

I wouldn't say you need the time off to "find your motivation again" this would not bode well, just say that due to personal issues you will need to take some time off and this would be a good time to use some of the excess holiday that has been accumulated over the year. If you left (whether voluntary or not) they would have to pay for the days owed to you not taken. So payroll would be unaffected.

So the choice should be yours - potential of extra paid days or some time to chill and remain sain!

I don't think it wrong at all. You earned the days off, and if you need a recharge, I say go for it. That is if they will let you!! Good Luck!

You have earned your days of holidays and now you need them, ask for a period of vacation, at the worst the MD will deny your request asking you to go on holiday a little bit later.

I'm with Pringle on this. If your employer has already made the decision to down size then your taking your entitled time off is irrelevant. The only thing I would tell you is to not say why you need the time off, just take it. Give your boss the appropriate time and go on leave.

Roll the dice. Tell your supervisor you heard about the possibility of being downsized and you need some time off to hunt for another job. If he says OK ..... you were already history, so go somewhere and enjoy yourself. If he doesn't then he'll have to give you a reason. It's better to know than continue to worry about it!

How does it make sense when you're one of those who has no one to cover for you BUT the company is looking to get rid of you?

Would u be compensated for those days if they downsized you? I dont know if they have unemployment insurance in England, but that money could come in handy down the road!

I don't think you should take time off right now. They'll say you're not a team player or some bull shit like that. If they do indeed downsize you, you'll probably be entitled to accrued and unpaid vacation pay.

If they really need you and you have no replacement then you probably should suck it up for another few weeks, especially if you like the company you work for. What are the other job opportunites in your area? If you could find another company with similar pay and benefits you could request your time off and then move on after.

Consider carefully though, most companies are alike nowdays. Every last bit of effort is generally required to stay employed. Sort of depends on how much you like your current position I guess.

Good luck to you man. I hope you at least get weekends off. :D

I would take your entitled holiday, and recharge your batteries as you have earned it and you are entitled to it. They are not going to lay you off for taking what you are entitled to. I don't know if they will lay you off or not, maybe, but I don't think the decison will be based on you taking your anual holiday allowance, it will be based on other things, like if they need you etc. (I am sure you know what it will be based on)

In addition if they are the a company thats going to bitch about you taking entitled holiday, what about next year etc, you have to have holiday eventually or you will burn yourself out.

I would take it as you have earned it and are entitled to it.

Look, why would they be trying to downsize the guy, who has so far, taken the least vacation and for whom there is no one really to cover?

Pringle was right. Excellent advice.

They are most likely sending all kinds of redundancy signals without really ending your contract simply because they see a great wisdom in making you work for free, or out of fear. (You choose...)

Besides, they are smartly gauging how far can they go in pushing you around.

This is what I'do:

Do your job best. Never complain about being 'tired', 'burnt out', 'exhausted' or whatever, regardless of how obvious this might be. Always be very positive and very optimistic.

Stand your ground and tell them that you wish to take your days off, or be fully compensated for the working time, if this is a viable option for you (tax, etc.).

The most productive of all approaches here is: 'Guys, I'll do everything for you, but you, too must do everything for me.'

Stick with it and they'll go along.

I'm going to be a little contrarian.
Would going the extra kilometer help your career? Is it a crucial time?
Are you knowledgeable enough about how the company operates that you can wisely evaluate your circumstances?
ON THE OTHER HAND, if you feel you health might be in danger, go see a doctor.
When was your last physical?
When did you last check your blood pressure?
Do you eat a healthy diet?
You don't want to have a stroke, bro'!

Well, the Co's a bit unsystematic. You contribute; they don't know it. So the company is self-glitched.

Good luck with the meeting joeslifeyork. Hope tomorrow goes well. Let us know how it goes.
