Okay i'm watching QVC and they're selling pies, they look delicious and full, chicken and mushroom etc, etc, but as much as i love pies i'm not paying £3 each for an individual pie.

Are you a pie connoisseur, do you have a favourite, do you buy or make your own ?

Mine is Chicken And Asparagus.

I do love a chicken pie. A local mom and pop restaurant makes a great one. It's not worth my time or effort to make one on my own. I really don't care for beef pies.

I used to buy the sausage gravy pot pies, then I looked to see how many calories were in them. They made a nice lunch on a cold day.

I do like chicken pot pies, but never made one. I bought frozen ones and microwaved them or else had them in a restaurant. I'm not sure how much they cost frozen, but I am sure they were more than that at a restaurant.

I was buying the Banquet brand for .89 cents at Kroger, so lunch for the 2 of us was $1.78. But very unhealthy. I might try to go home made this fall.

£3 isn't particularly cheap and you're stuck with having 10 pies in your freezer. I'd rather buy them individually from the supermarket on the rare occasions I want one.

On a more general point, who on earth watches QVC?

I love savory pies, but rarely buy them. I did recently get some Marie Calender's chicken, but I don't usually.

Also, I agree with Alistair, the beef ones have a whang of celery or something that makes them taste more like commercial bouillon.

Where I do like beef is in shepherd's pie.

It is understandable that fat and salt would be high, but they don't have to be. If you have the time and patience to make them yourself, pie dough is not high in salt and you could use an oil-based crust to keep it healthier. Also, you can manage to use lean chicken or beef with more herbs and potassium salt to keep it down. It will still taste wonderful and you'll thank yourself when you bring them back from the freezer.

I did go out to search the QVC site to see about the pricing that Cormac mentioned, and I think that this is the page: https://www.qvcuk.com/The-Real-Pie-...-Pie-Selection.product.808735.html?sc=NAVLIST
In the US, that would be a fair price ($3.93 per pie) today for an individual sized pie, although not in the freezer section of the grocery. Our grocers carry inferior pies to that shown, and you'd never find actual chunks of roast like that ones in that video. Our better frozen pies here run just under that price, but the same thing at a restaurant would cost more than twice that.

The best chicken pot pie in the USA is made by a department store restaurant.
In Chicago, IL, the Walnut Room at Marshall Field's was known for its chicken pot pie.
According to the hype, they have been made the same way since 1907.
I can speak from experience, having dined in the Walnut Room, that the pies are amazing!
Macy's took over Marshall Field's in 2006. I have not been there since. So I cannot speak for how the Walnut Room is now.

Anyway, you can make their pie at home. Here is the official Marshall Field's/Macy's Chicken Pot Pie Recipe, direct from their website...

How many do they serve?

I just calculated that for me to make a 9 inch beef pie with real butter pastry and prime rib costs about $20 Cdn. or about 11 pounds.

And it serves 4.

On a point of pedantry, shepherd's pie contains lamb. If you want beef, you should go for cottage pie instead.

Not on this side of the pond. ;) We ain't got no cottage pie over here. (Least none that I've ever heard of.)

One of my best friends from high school is a host for QVC.

She does quite well.

I still can't handle watching though -- even when she is on.

In my defense it was 2am and there was fuck all else on.

Yes. I had remembered that bit of nomenclature shift, and have even been faithful to share that with others in my circles.

But I was referring to the dish in my environs. I'd actually like to taste the lamb version, as I'm not a fan of lamb, but do enjoy it in some preparations, and with the right vegetables and herbs, am sure I would like it.

I had steak and kidney pie when in London and indeed enjoyed it.
