Tragic...horrible. All of them so young. I thought things were better now than when I was their ages, but I guess not. This is unbearable, something has to change.

Jesus Christ. You know, I just had this weird thought that maybe these highly publicized suicides could be encouraging other teenagers to successfully commit suicide. I know it's a perverted thought, but I can't help but think "if so-and-so can do it, I can be successful too"...drives me crazy just thinking about it.

On Tuesday in Washington, Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance project will premiere the film "Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case that Made History," which follows the story of Jamie Nabozny, who sued his school district in Ashland, Wis., after he reported his bullies to school authorities. It led to a federal court decision holding that school officials could be held accountable for not stopping the harassment and abuse of gay students.

Southern Poverty Law Center's Marion Steinfels said, "The hope is that this film will make students and teachers understand how deeply vicious anti-gay bullying can affect young people and embolden them to act on behalf of their peers or students."

Better question - is this week's tally an anomaly, or for some reason, are we just getting better coverage?

Have just read all the posts on this tragic series of events if this had happened here in Britain even though we have our faults there would be uproar on the streets. The UK now has some of the most stringent and harsh anti-gay policies
in the world especially around gay bullying and harrasment. America land of the free what a crock of shit.

God I don't even have words anymore.

Joel Madden of Good Charlotte posted this on youtube - Sorry I'm not tech savvy enough to embed, but I thought someone might want to see it.

First saw it on Perez - not a fan, but at least he's acting like a leader. Who'd a thunk it, right?

Not unless the ones above are the only ones, and there weren't any others that weren't publicized...

You guys should really do some research on the subject. On average over 15 gay youth commit suicide each day in the United States. At least 30% of all youth suicides in the US are by gays or lesbians. For every 5 gay men you know at least 1 is missing due to suicide before the age of 24. These are all from studies within the last 5 years. The only difference is that some are now getting media coverage.

I tried to kill myself when I was 15, and thankfully my immediate family was supportive and got me out of the evil, evil community and school I was in. Since then I've worked with a lot of troubled gay youth and followed studies closely. I'll post more detailed information on studies, statistics, and where to find credible information once I put my notes together.

This problem is a lot bigger than I think any of you are realizing.

Nooooo!!!

@Chlorogoth WELLDONE ..|, If only these were as strong as you were

I wasn't strong, I just had support to fall back on that I didn't know I had which got me out of the environment. Too many of these kids don't have anyone they can talk to about these issues, let alone have someone to support and help them, or with the ability to get them out if it's just too much. It all depends on who they have to turn to, how bad their situation is, and how long they have to put up with it. Given the right circumstances, anyone can be driven to suicide. Unfortunately those circumstances exist for homos all over thsi country

This is so sad, it's got to stop...I went to Pride for the first time today and there were many GREAT organizations there for our youth, even in my pretty conservative city. We need to make these more publicly known so that these young folks can get help...it took me until I was 20 to accept myself because I could not find such organizations and groups.

Far to many young lives lost this past week. All due the fact they were gay. When will the hate, bigots of intolerance stop? just because we targets of the hate generated by the far right media and the religious right.

what happened to these kids?
i know
Tyler Clementi( 18 ) Sept 22 (room mate spied on him having sex then jumped off bridge)

None of these children are just a name. Each one is a tragedy. Being bullied for being a "fag," "pansy" or whatever other hate epithet the troglodytes choose to toss isn't new. But this sudden rash of deaths seems to be. Or is it just not usually picked up by the media?

I'm not sure if my survival instinct was stronger or if today's ability to bully someone anonymously from the privacy of your own computer has more to do with it, but I survived such taunting before I even understood what I was being teased about (even switching schools in 5th grade because of it).

At the new school I tried emulating my taunters in order to fit in, but found I was no longer surrounded by assholes. After a few semesters I moved on and grew up.

I guess my point is... bullying isn't new... statistics have already show that LGBT youth are far more likely to attempt suicide. So why aren't schools doing more?

What is it about 2010 that makes someone think it's OK to harass someone 24/7 or broadcast their roomate's sexual encounter over the net (for all anyone knows that may have been Tyler Clementi's first time and I cannot imagine how mortified a conflicted youth would feel at it being viewed like entertainment). But the idea that his life was over? Where does that come from?

It comes from the feeling that gays are second class citizens, subject to derision and ridicule at the whim of those around us. The adult world has (generally) gotten past that (there are exceptions everywhere - such as the asshats who recently wandered into the Stonewall Inn" and had to ask their victim what kind of bar it was before beating him up in the bathroom).

I think when adults are involved the law should be as well, but what can we do about minors bullying minors? The Police are busy enough without investigating every instance of schoolyard bullying. So the schools need to police themselves and their charges. They need to do their job and EDUCATE the children that it is NEVER ok to harass someone... to torment someone... just to amuse themselves or others. Something about our world is allowing kids to disconnect from the ramifications of their actions. It needs to stop.
