“That is So Gay” Is Not Hate Speech?

I saw a clip on YouTube in which gay guys ask to speak against hate speech. I agree with the content of the clip except for part that the phrase “that is so gay” is classified as hate speech.



Sure, it is much better when the word “gay” isn’t used in a slightly negative way, but in most cases it isn’t a hate expression at all and the funny thing is that gay guys use that phrase themselves!



Personally I have never said it, because it isn’t a common phrase in my country. My question: do you consider that phrase hate speech or do you think it’s just an innocent phrase?

I don't think 'that's so gay' equals 'that's so fucked up', but more like 'that's so silly'.

Depends on who is using it.

If someone who is gay says it, more likely it's not used as a derogatory statement.

If someone who is straight uses it, more likely used as much.

Like, "those shoes are so gay".

Can't someone who is straight use that phrase in a non derogatory way?

What if bisexuals use that phrase?

"that is so gay" - it is condescending and stereotypical whether used by straight persons and or homosexual persons.

at times when one homosexual uses the phrase towards another homosexual it just adds one more layer of negative images within homosexual society. it is antiquated and (younger) homosexuals need to start understanding that in their daily use of the phrase.

I was replying to Piggy. He stated that if someone who is gay says it, it is not used as a derogatory statement.

I was pointing out that a straight guy can have the same non-deogatory intention by saying that.

Have you (or anyone else for that matter) ever use that phrase yourself?

You are right. In essence it shouldn't be used, but people do including gays.

How can you ask others not to use that phrase when gays use that phrase themselves?

i have never used that phrase, nor would i. and i detest hearing it from anyone, straight or homosexual.

I know who you were replying to. I was just wondering if you had an example of a way you think a straight guy could you use it and not be derogatory.

Let's say "your jacket is so gay". Gay guys use that so often. Straight guys can say this without being negative towards homosexuality. There's no hate in this to classify it as hate speech.

Don't get me wrong. Some are just little pricks and use it as humiliation to other straight guys, but they would use stronger words like fag and so on. Not every one is like this tho.

I've used it.

And I've meant it in both complimentary and uncomplimentary ways.

Anyone who equates this with hate speech is likely one of those thumbsuckers who cries before they're even hurt.

Yes, it is "hate speech" The phrase is almost exclusively used in a derogatory and degrading manner. It is not meant as a positive or complimentary statement. Even when used by members of the "community" it still connotes sterotype and is demeaning.
