My Sister called me tonight. She's in desperate need of a car, and has managed to save about 10 grand for a fairly good used one, she's just not sure what she should buy...

She drives about 50 miles round trip everyday to and from her job, so needless to say, she needs something with great gas mileage. But, she'd like it to be fairly safe, too, with side curtain air bags and all of that....

Frankly, I wasn't sure what to recommend.

My mind first went to a '01 or '02 Toyota or Honda, but I'm not sure if that's the way to go or not...

I told her I'd ask my JUB pals....

Thoughts ? Opinions ?

honestly you can't go wrong with either a toyota or a honda as they are both pretty solid cars.

if i had a choice i would probably go with a toyota corolla myself.

Yeah Honda's are the way to go,Very reliable cars just the insurance is a bit higher on them..Same with Toyotas,Also maybe look at a VW....Oh and Also check out these sites to look around and get a feel before going out and searching

www.cars.com

you can look at local dealers on there ect and also has a link to KBB

You echo my thoughts on the best bets for your sister's needs. Go with an Accord or Camry. Don't fret about high mileage. These cars are built to keep on running. And yes, I have owned both. None better.

use to love my old Honda civic--
the old Jetta VW was great but I hated dealing with maintence issues with it.
I think I have had a car from all the major makers---still love my crappy Geo Tracker--so fun to drive and gas prices are making it even attractive idea to keep it a bit longer.

I will say this stay away from the

Suzuki Forenza
Chevrolet Optra
and all the car's like them two

They drink gas like v-8's even tho my Forenza help up pretty good when i flipped it the gas millage was bad

Ten grand is a decent amount for a reliable used car. Try to find one that STILL has some warranty left on it. That way, if any issues arise subsequent to purchase, you are still covered under warranty. That is important. Too often, used cars are sold in "as is" condition and I would NEVER depend on what the salesperson has to say about the condition of the the vehicle. In all likelihood, they paid very little for it on a trade-in. Car dealers make more money on used cars than new cars! So, if possible, insist on a car that still has some warranty left on it and even see if you can extend the warranty. An investment of an extra $200-$300 for an extended warranty is WELL WORTH it. A single problem with transmission or air conditioning or other issues could cost well over $1000 or more. You know how salespeople can be. Once they sell the car, they don't know you anymore! So protect your investment! And SHOP AROUND! Don't let your sister be too quick about parting with her hard earned savings. With a car, it's not just looks and appearance. It's mechanical condition! You want a RELIABLE automobile that will serve you well.

As far as what brand she wants, that's up to her. In view of current and expected future GASOLINE costs, look for fuel efficiency. Fuel-efficient used cars may not be easy to find because everybody wants them. Don't let them push a gas hog on you. Once you decide what you want, call your insurance agent BEFORE you sign a sales contract and find out EXACTLY what it's going to cost to insure the vehicle per your state laws. If any portion of the vehicle has to be financed, the lender will have insurance requirements as well to protect their loan.

Toyota and Honda and good cars. There are also some good American cars with excellent warranties. Generally, foreign cars are expensive to repair so weigh all that into your decision. For example, I love Toyota and have owned a couple of them. Are they "cheap to keep" as their marketing says? NO! They are not. Repairs can be way more expensive than American cars.

Finally, do your homework on the internet BEFORE you even go to a dealer. Visit auto websites and read reviews and repair histories on vehicles. Also go to www.kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book) for REAL pricing and an analysis of various cars. Also, as someone else mentioned, www.cars.com Don't take the dealers word for anything, no matter where you go. Get it all in writing. Fight back and don't get ripped off! When buying a used car, you need to be "armed" with as much knowledge as possible. The last thing you want is to dump hard earned money into somebody else's "lemon".

Hope this helps.

I'm not big on foreign cars, but I have seen some Toyota Camry's that are pretty sharp..

I don't think any of the new cars hold up in a crash..

At the house,I run an old Chevy Caprice, not bad on gas,and steel all around.

Lolo---at least it's better on gas then your work vehicle.

subaru subaru subaru i've had 3 and never a problem unlike my dodge or chevy and even my jeep cj5

I would look into a brand spanking new car for that kind of down payment. She will be driving it a lot, so buying a car that is used, may be half "used up"

Domestic/Import are both good and here are my recomendations not in importance:

Chevrolet Cobalt
Ford Focus
Pontiac G5
Hyundai Accent
Hyundai Elantra
Suzuki Forenza
Kia (they have a couple models)

....for a few more dollars
Toyota Yaris
Nissan Versa
Nissan Sentra
Toyota Corolla
Suzuki SX Crossover
Subaru Impreza
Having owned two Cavaliers, I was a satisfied customer. I only had to buy brakes, tires, and batteries.

I know some may not keep thier value but that doesn't matter if the car is kept for years and she likes it. If she likes it, she will want to take care of it and keep it. High energy prices make larger, fully loaded cars like Camry's, Accords, etc. a reason to think twice.

i get that toyotas a relativly reliable but toyota has sucked any sort of spirit and originality from there cars driving a toyota is like driving a fridge on wheels

other than that since i have no real idea what cars you have over there other than the toyotas
get something small honda civic Focus or smaller they will probably hold value better that something like a camry due to there fuel efficiency mazda 2 or 3 ford fiesta if you have them

try to find a Ford fusion..I have one and it gets about 30 miles to the gallon city and almost 40 on the highway....way above what the sticker said..very pleased with it..and the extended warranty is a good idea..I pay for nothing...oil change tire rotation even wipers are covered!

I'm trying to wrap my mind around saving $10k and then buying a car with it. I'm such a spendthrift I'd be using that as the down payment for a Jaguar S-Series. Assuming I could save up that much money, which is an "assumption" that wanders dangerously close to a "fantasy."

I don't really know anything about brands (though I can attest from various of my friends that a Honda Civic will last forever...so long as you don't bang it into anything, whereupon it will fall apart), but I have had really good experiences buying used cars from rental agencies. My Ford Focus was a corporate lease before I bought it, and that shaved three thousand off the price, and it still had the full warranty; my dad got his nearly-new Kia for about 33% off the sticker price, and it's in lovely condition.

Something to think about. :)

for $10k and as much driving as she does...she could get a relatively NEW car from Honda or Hyndai(sp?) that's a compact. I had a sonata as a rental and it was a compact with great gas mileage. When I looked it up it was only around $10k and it comes with a ton of safety features (plus tells you the pressure of your tires!)

If she gets a 2007 or even a 2006 it'll be in her price range :)

Oooh!! Oooh!! I have one for sale! I'll take ten grand for it:

CW Coach has a 1996 Cadillac Miller-Meteor for sale for $8970. The gas mileage won't be super but it's only got 35k miles on it. Always garaged. Meticulously maintained. Mostly driven slowly. Will most likely have the best ride of any car in this thread...

And did I mention it will carry all her stuff, she'll be waved through most roadblocks, and it has under floor storage so that you can transport liquor across dry counties without getting caught?

Get a copy of the Consumer Reports Used Car edition just out last month. It was invaluable in helping us decide on a 2006 Ford Focus SEL. a lot of car for what we paid. Good mileage, reliable, and everything we wanted in terms of features. CR's Best Buy feature was most helpful. Also good advise from experts as to what to look for in a used vehicle. According to CR, we bought an $11,000 car for $8,000.
