Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new to this but I've (as others have said before) been lurking around on the boards for a while and I've finally decided that I'm going to take control of my life and "be happy". I have a couple of issues that I'm trying to deal with at this point of my life but one of the ones I'm trying to focus on is losing some weight. I don't know what the average weight of an 18 year old, 5 foot 7 seven guy is supposed to be (and I really don't want to know) but my goal is to lose 50 pounds. I decided though, instead of making it an overall goal, I want to split it up and lose 10 pounds each month for 5 months because I think that makes it a bit easier to keep motivated. I'm in Jersey so the temperature and the ice make it next to impossible to go out for a run so are there any suggestions for anything else I can do? Any tips would really help. Also, in terms of food, I think I can say I "generally" eat healthy because I'm a vegetarian and most of my meals are full of vegetables but I can't say everything I eat is healthy. I always keep in mind a 1,500 calorie intake.

Any tips, pointers, or anything would really help. Thank you!:-)

i think losing a pound or two a week is considered healthy weight loss. and there are a bunch of body mass calculators and height weight age charts on the internet. Personally i liked the rowing machine they had at the work out center I used to go to alot!! good aerobic/anaerobic mix or possibilities. Thought of getting one for home.

Remember that muscle weighs more than fat and is more compact and aesthetically pleasing. So even if you GAIN weight, as long as it is muscle weight you should be fine..

Gotdimples77- I've heard that two pounds a week is considered a healthy progression but I feel that I need to work at a more increased level. Would you happen to know if losing 10 pounds in one month is easy to do with mild exercise? I thought 10 pounds would be easy but without access to any gyms or equipment, maybe I thought wrong...

Darkdreamerx- I completely forgot about that! I plan on doing mostly (if not only) cardio and from what I've gathered, cardio is good losing pounds as opposed to building muscle right? Would you recommend doing some muscle building exercises concurrently? Honestly, for now, my main goal is to slim down some. Then I'd focus on building muscles but if it's better or more beneficial to do both, than I might as well give it a shot.

If you still would like to go out running in this weather, google "icebug shoes." These are running shoes with spikes on the bottom. I wear these all the time in the winter. Also, make sure you have the correct clothing (only dri-fit fabrics, no cotton), and layer properly. If I'm dressed properly, even 5F can feel comfortable.

With a combination of proper diet (as opposed to dieting) and exercise you can easily lose that first 10 pounds in a month. Whether you can continue to lose 10 pounds a month really depends on your body type. Some people are just not meant to be twigs and it becomes increasing difficult to lose extra weight. But you will find that out after you shed that first 10 or 20.

A proper diet takes into consideration a few rules: 1) avoid processed sugar. That means sodas, candy, cake, etc. Sugar turns into fat rather quickly; 2) avoid white flour such as white bread; 3) avoid fried foods because of the oil; and 4) eat at least three meals a day, but eat small portions. Its better to eat 5 times a day than to eat 3 times a day and stuff yourself each time.

In terms of exercise, there is plenty you can do at home without any equipment. Of course you know about push ups and sit ups, but you can use two chairs to do dips, you can stand on the front edge of the bottom stair and do calf raises, etc. And for cardio jumping rope is excellent and you can do it indoors.

Most of the weight loss guidelines are tailored to women and women have a much higher fat to muscle ratio than men.

Instead of focusing on measuring your progress in pounds, think about setting goals in terms of inches of fat that you want to lose around your waist along with inches of muscle that you want to gain in your legs, arms and chest- especially if you're going to be going to the gym and doing weightlifting in addition to cardio.
