Hi everyone, new member here, but a longtime lurker.

I recently came across an article about straight men and sex with men. It claims that 10% of straight men admit to having sex with men and that they still do! I am wondering what you guys think of this. A lot of the guys on here seem to have had sex with straight men before...so what do you guys think of the percentage? This article is a bit older now so I am not sure if the numbers have gone up or down. Here is the article link:

www.webmd.com/sex/news/20060918/many-straight-men-have-gay-sex

I think it's a bit high... But I'm pretty sure many straight men out there played a little bit with a same-sex partner/friend ;) But what do they mean by having sex? Sucking? Fucking? Tickling around naked in a bed?

I can easily believe that 10% have; in fact I'd easily believe it was more than that. I have no doubt plenty of guys have been curious enough to try something and then decided it wasn't for them and that was that.

That 10% still do is a bit... suspect. A bit of m2m fun once or twice, sure, you might still be straight. More times than that and I don't think anyone could seriously still believe they are.

It's always fascinating how the media "re-interprets" the findings of research studies. Like the headline, "10% Of Straight Men Have Sex With Men, New York". That sounds like a marketing slogan for the "I Love NY" campaign: "Come to NYC! See a show! Fuck a straight man!".

Later in the article, there's a statement "Almost 10% of men who said they were straight had had sex with at least one man during the last twelve months...".

This makes it a little clearer that:
  1. The "straight" meant that the responding self-labeled as "straight" versus asking Kinsey type questions to determine where on the scale the person falls
  2. The question asked homosexual activity in the last twelve months (primarily to evaluate use of condoms and safer sex)

The actual research summary is here. A few things to note:
  1. The investigators were researching preventative health practices.
  2. The data in this study is now 10 years old.
  3. Of the sample, 91.3% reported straight or heterosexual identity
  4. The finding of the study was:
"These investigators performed a population-based health survey of men living in New York City and found that almost 10% who self-identified as straight had at least 1 sexual encounter with another man during the previous year. These men were less likely than self-identified gay men to have been tested for HIV infection or to have used a condom during their most recent sexual encounter."
  5. The study recommendation was
"Physicians cannot rely on self-identification of sexual orientation to assess the likelihood of risky behavior. They must ask specific questions about sexual practices."

I agree with Dr. Ninja. With males, the sex urge is always just under the surface, so curiosity is pretty normal. I wouldn't be surprised if lots of males, especially young ones, the experimenting has been part of their pasts. If it continues into an ongoing thing it is no longer curiosity: you ain't straight. You can only be "curious" for so long before you have to own who and what you are.

It is scientifically proven that men get A LOT more hornier than women, and a lot more often. That is why straight men decide to go for gay men when they can't get any women, or they do it just for experience or money.

Since the study is 10 years old...they should follow up with those 10% straight men who had gay sex in the study. With a more open society in NY and US, I bet they are now gay or bi in 2014.

... I bet they are now gay or bi in 2014.

Chances are they were gay or bi in 2003 but couldn't quite get past the "straight" category when pressing the answer into their telephone keypad. :)

experience....not sure, but the number of guys claiming to be str8 on gay hook up sites/etc is over 10%- hell, 20% seem to be married

Is that including the Navy and Prisons?

I'm not so sure the Navy is the best place to look for straight men to fill out a survey. After all, it's composed of guys who said "Months at sea in close quarters with a bunch of young, fit guys and no women in sight? Sign me up!"

I'd bet money that 99.9999% o'those people are neither married nor straight - they're just taking advantage of the gay male fixation with straight guys and 'conversion'. Easy way to get laid, or so I hear. Not my demographic, obviously.

Scientifically proven my ass. Testosterone can up your sex drive, but it can also totally kill it. You might try looking into the virgin/whore dichotomy before claiming 'Science!'

There's a nice image floating around that has a woman talking to a man, it goes something like "I want you to know, sincerely, that while you may think women aren't dating you because you're a nerd/geeky/unpopular/whatever that that isn't true. I don't care that you're nerd/geeky/unpopular/whatever. The reason I don't want to go out with you is because you're an asshole."

That goes for sex as well. There's more to lose on the other end by random fucking so casual sex isn't done as often. Which has nothing to do with horniness levels.

I started having sex with a guy when he was 15 and continued until he was 22, he always dated women and later married and claims never to have had gay sex with anyone else before or since. Another guy I started having sex with when he was 38 and married with no previous gay experience. That continued for several years until geography separated us. When I was in college I met a guy who said if it weren't for the stigma of being gay he would move in with me. I could go on and on. So yes, I think there are a lot of otherwise straight men who participate in gay sex. There are also a lot of gay men who (at least in the past) get married to a woman but continue to play on the side.
