thats ok no worries
I miss the stripped era too

No Linda Ronstadt, no Barbra Streisand, no Frank Sinatra? What a joke. And sorry, but this is one guy who CAN'T STAND Aretha, who is the epitome of the word over-rated. Go have another twinkie, "Queen Of Soul".

As long as Aretha is #1, I won't complain about the rest.

(She's the greatest, not the "greastest")

She's not the 'greatest' nor is she the 'greastest' but she's definitely the most over-rated! Maybe the word for her is 'grossest.'

^Aretha Franklin is overrated? You've clearly never heard her readings of "That Lucky Old Sun" or her 10 minute recording of "Amazing Grace."

How many singers can read Amazing Grace for 10 minutes and still be captivating?

+1

Aretha's Amazing grace is jus WOW

I've been fortunate enough to have not heard her take a great 3 1/2 minute song and drag it out to 10 minutes. Does stretching a song out to 10 minutes automatically make it better? It sounds like absolute torture. I'm getting ill just thinking about her destroying this song. I'll take Judy Collins 3 1/2 minute version over Aretha's 10 minute torture fest anytime!
:-)

For me the best singers of all time (on vocal ability) are Alanis Morissette, Joni Mitchell and Jeff Buckley. I’m glad 2 of them made a list. It pisses me off Dylan is listed, love the guy and his songs a lot but his voice really is not what is great about him.

Sounds like you're one of those people with a short attention span. If you can't stand a 10 minute Amazing Grace, how would you fare at a 2-hour long symphony? I guess that question is irrelevant, something tells me you don't have any intentions of attending any symphonies anytime soon, they're all longer than 3 1/2 minutes.

It speaks about Aretha's reading ability that she was able to take a 3 minute song, stretch it out for 10 minutes, and create an instant classic, it's one of her most popular recordings so the rest of the nation doesn't seem to mind that her song was longer than your standard Britney Spears music video.

For that matter, it's completely disingenuous to insist that the song is only 3 1/2 minutes. In it's original written version it's actually shorter than that but there is no standard timing for the song, it's been done slow/fast, with breaks inserted at the discretion of the performer. 3 1/2 minutes is not the requisite length for that song, imposing it is more a case of your desire for quick gratification than it is any sort of standard.

When I do go to the symphony, I fully expect to be there for at least a couple of hours, if not more. As long as there isn't anything remotely close to Aretha's version of 'Amazing Grace' I would find it enjoyable. I guess you qualify as "the rest of the nation" when you determine that we don't mind listening to her dreadful version. Whatever floats your boat.
:D

A list of the greatest singers of "all time" that doesn't include Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra. Ella Fitzgerald or Judy Garland isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

I realize it's Rolling Stone which hasn't been relevant to the music industry in 20 years, but come on.

It says "of all time", but the fine print says the artists were asked to select their 20 favorite from the "rock era".

phoenix, you are my new hero. I would rather have pins inserted into my penis than listen to that over-rated "Queen Of Soul". If you really want torture, listen to her destroy "I Had A Dream" from Les Miserables , sung live at Clinton's inauguration. The absolute worst.

She did not butcher that she gave it something it was missing....feeling!!....Some of you need to learn what real singing is all about!!...

Her recording of Amazing Grace is one of her most popular recordings, the album it's featured on is one of her best sellers. You've yet to name a pop star who could perform that song for 10 minutes and keep the record-buying audience engaged. In the background you can hear that the live audience is enjoying it as well, no doubt a spiritually transcendent moment in their lives.

Thank you glad someone on here knows something other than what male celeb has a nice ass!!....lol...

Oh and forgot to mention..the audience was on its feet when she finished the song..you seem to have left that part out!!....She is FAR from over rated!!

I wonder how bland is that version??.....

Let's see, Aretha gets standing ovations. I'm going to assume Celine Dion gets ovations at her performances too. Does that mean she's one of the greatest singers of all time? They are equal in their over-dramatic singing style, so I guess you have to add Celine in the mix.

But anyway, Aretha isn't worth arguing over. I think she's horrible and over-rated. If you love her, good for you. I don't.

Peace to all!

Aretha vs. Celine? pfft.
- You know why Aretha's the biggest Diva? Because she eats other Divas for breakfast.

And Aretha just killed this song.

this list is ?able some of them are great but this list is not in the order that i would ever guess, aretha wouldent be in the top 50 if i made this list and what about bowie as number 1 and were is courtney love

Any greatest song list that doesn't have "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as #1 is horribly wrong. Case closed
