What a lovely bribe you are being treated to just before the elections.

I hope that you are of strong enough mind to resist the fruits of temptation being offered by the gun-toting, anti-choice, pro-execution, mother of a slut, grandmother of a bastard moose-shooting bawhead.

No, there are some of us who are actually capable of contemplative thought. Probably about the same proportion as you "down south" folks. There are just fewer up here.

I don't know where chubguy got the $3300 figure; I don't think the amount has been announced. We will get our regular Permanent Fund Dividend, which is estimated at about $2000, plus $1200 to help offset energy prices.

The Permanent Fund is the result of the foresight and statesmanship of Governor Jay Hammond in 1976 (the last Republican I voted for). He knew that the smartest thing to do with a windfall of money from the North Slope oil bonanza was stash it away out of reach of the politicians. The dividend program came about when it was decided that the citizens of the state actually owned the resource and deserved to share the income from the Fund. You can grouse about it, but it is the result of luck and the wisdom of a few people. And, yes, we pay income taxes on it as regular income.

The energy assistance is because the state is rolling in oil money -- a million dollars an hour over what the state budgeted for this year -- and people are hit with some of the highest oil and gas prices in the country. Gas here is $4.699 a gallon and my heating oil bill for last month's delivery was $4.99 a gallon. You can piss and moan all you want, but you would be just as happy to get it as we are.

If America sneezes, the rest of the world gets a cold. Europe are suffering from one hell of a bout of 'flu' at the moment thanks to America fucking up with regard to sub-prime mortgages.

So yes, I do think it is fair if people around the world pass comment on a woman who is, potentially, one heart attack from being President of the US of A. Nobody has taken it out on the "people of Alaska" or Americans in general.

Regards.

As many of you will have noticed, a number of posts have had to be removed from this thread. I will remind all concerned to limit your posting to the issue at hand. Do not attack other posters, personally. Baiting, that is posting an inflamatory comment designed to elicit a personal response, is also prohibited pursuant to the rules here at JUB.

JUB encourages the open discussion of events as the membership may so choose. All members, regardless of what country they call home are free to comment, so long as they do so within the rules.

And Ben46, if you are referring to Mrs. Palin's son, Trig who suffers from Down's Syndrome, as a bastard, that's false. It is in fact her son,not her grandson. If you are referring to her unwed daughter being pregnant, she's supposedly getting married, ergo the child will not be a bastard. Perhaps you might care to register and send them a wedding gift?:D

I thought Republicans were against income redistribution?

I thought Republicans were against income redistribution?

Thats what I thought too noah.

Why is it when Mrs. Palin raises taxes on oil companies because their profits have soared thats referred to as 'taking on big oil' but when Obama proposes to raise their taxes thats called 'Carter redux'?

I think Obama would be smart to say if we allow off shore drilling we should do it following Mrs. Palin taxing policy in Alaska since it works so well up there.

While I don't think the republican party would be receptive to such an idea I do think the american voting public would. :D

Since its our national resource why shouldn't the oil companies pay more to access it when they're making more when they sell it?

Europe is suffering from a bout of 'flu' because they saw us feeding at the greed trough and wanted to wiggle their asses in and get a piece as well. Unfortunately for you, your banks are now left holding the bag on bad investments they made, knowing full well the risk involved. Nobody forced them to eat at our table.

I agree. If we want to be the leaders of the free world then we need to accept all the criticism that comes with the accolades. Our domestic and foreign policies have ripple effects on the world and the world has a right to voice their opinion on how fast we're heading toward the proverbial brick wall.

Socialize the oil industry.
Then how would our politicians afford their mansions, yachts and other perks?[/sarcasm]

Socialize the oil industry.

Its not a good idea to use the 'S' word IC. Accusations of being a fellow traveler won't be far behind. ;)

Much better to couched the idea in such a way as to mute any opposition to it.

Maybe something along the lines of this: since republicans are fond of saying they wish government would be run like a business and since no well run business would sell its assets for anything less than market value we should demand market value for the assets we're selling.

This isn't about politics......its about business.

BTW since the Alaska oil tax is 25% and the corporate federal tax is 35% that means that oil companies pay a combined tax of 60% for all the oil they pump out of Alaska.

Hard to believe the oil companies even bother to drill there ain't it. :p

I thought Republicans were against income redistribution?

They are quite happy to do it if it results in

a) votes

b) campaign contributions

Jay Hammond was an old-style Republican. He was interested in fairness and the common good -- things that vanished from the party about the time of the revered Mr. Reagan.

Gee, no wonder her approval rating is 80%. That's almost as good as promising free blow jobs to every Alaskan male.

I got a big giggle a few years back when middle-income Republicans were all smugly saying "I guess I'm just gonna have to decide where I'm going to spend my tax cut!!"

Especially since it was only the very rich who actually got any discernible tax cut.

Alaska is an unusual state with a unique state government. Although it is hardcore Republican, there are practices that are seemingly contradictory to the party's platform.
