18 Men arrested in Sex sting in Manhattan Beach

18 men were arrested in a gay sex sting at a Manhattan Beach men's public restroom along the beach.

Manhattan Beach is a beachfront suburb on the Westside of Los Angeles, just south of LAX Airport.

From CBS Los Angeles --

Los Angeles County Lifeguards alerted Manhattan Beach police to unusual activity taking place at a public bathroom located at Marine Avenue at The Beach, authorities said.

“The same men were frequently using and returning to the location, and men were loitering in the area as well as inside the restroom for long periods of time,” Stephanie Martin of MBPD said.

Lifeguards and maintenance staff also found graffiti that depicted “graphic sexual images as well as holes that were drilled in the partitions of the bathroom stalls,” Martin said.

Manhattan Beach detectives began monitoring websites and chat rooms where discussions about the “Marine Bathroom” were taking place and determined the restroom was being used as a meeting place for sexual activity, police said.

These guys were engaging in consensual sexual activity. It may not meet your standard for behaviour but they weren't harming anyone.

Look, I'm the last one to tell guys not to hook-up, or even meet somebody to hook-up with in public. But I don't think the actual sex should be in public. And it IS a public restroom. I know a lot of these places get a reputation for such things, but you can't expect random people to always know these things. There's a park here in town that has that reputation, but I'd say a majority of people don't know that. They wouldn't see the park and steer clear because "it's obviously a gay hook-up place". And as such, I don't like the idea of guys having sex there, because the general public is going to be thinking it's just a park (or restroom).

That said, did they really need to do a "sting operation"? Just fucking walk in, already. "Hey, look, two guys having sex in public - issue a warning/summons/arrest."

Some years ago, the police pulled a sting operation at the Opera House in Orillia.

Lives were ruined and there were even suicides.

A car is private property, and you can choose to park the car in a secluded place, with the tinted windows up, so nobody on the outside has to be subjected to what is going on inside the car.

That option doesn't exist for men's public restrooms. An unsuspecting person, or a minor, could unknowingly walk into the restroom (with the intent of using the toilet for its intended purpose) and be subjected to viewing adult sexual activity. Furthermore, people don't have the right to use a taxpayer-funded public restroom on a public beach for their sexual escapades.

And this isn't limited to gay sex only. I would say the exact same thing, if it was a man & a woman getting it on in a public restroom too.

Lastly, where was all of your sympathy for former Republican Sen. Larry Craig, a "poor closeted soul who [had] no other means or places to have sex?" After all, he was arrested in a similar sting operation at the Minneapolis airport men's public restroom several years ago, wasn't he?

I found "rest stop sex" to be somewhat more understandable in the days before the internet. When if you were curious about m-on-m sex, you could either "go to the gay club" (where everybody would know) or "go to the hook-up spot". But it's 2012, for Chrissake. My 70-year-old relatives all have computers, internet access, and e-mail accounts. I'm all but certain that if I wanted to get laid before midnight by a guy, I could do it just by posting a couple places online. And I'm totally fine with "public/private" hook-up places like bath houses and swim clubs. I'm thinking those that frequent "public restrooms" probably don't do it because "they don't know any other way". They do it because they like doing it that way.

The news article said that lifeguards noticed "suspicious" activity around the men's public restroom at the beach, with men hanging out near the restroom for long periods of time, then going in, going out, and going back in again.

The restroom stalls had graffiti with profanities related to sex and there were gloryholes drilled through the restroom stalls.
