18 Men arrested in Sex sting in Manhattan Beach

I wonder how the police officers reacted after seeing holes in the stalls ^^

Not Again !

The highway rest stop near here once had wooden panels between stalls. Holes got carved regularly.

So they replaced the wood with stainless steel. Holes appeared anyway, though when patched they didn't return quite as fast.

So they replaced the stainless steel with high-density brick. For months there were only scratches on various bricks. Then an entire brick disappeared . . . .

At a small state park in the area, they just took out the partitions between stalls.

When I was in college, a public restroom in a large park half a mile from campus got locked every night, but the locks just disappeared. Some students joked they were just building the place wrong -- it should have "women's toilet" at one end, "men's toilet", at the other, and "whatever" in the middle.

They sound determined and desperate. I personally have never understood the fascination.

Questions:

Do they see each other's faces AT ALL during the whole process? Even after it's over, do they deliberately avoid each other and wait for one of them to leave the restroom? If so, then do they really not care at all whether the guy is 16 or 60? Or anything about his appearance? Or anything at all about his sexual history or cleanliness?

I find it a terribly cold and impersonal way of having sex with a guy.

When I saw Manhattan Beach, I thought "Sex sting in Brooklyn?! And I wasn't invited??"

(Manhattan Beach is the name of a nice little beach-town on the coast of Brooklyn, NY)

There are probably still places out there that you can locked up for public lewdness. Don't be disappointed that you didn't get invited!

Bingo. Exactly. That's precisely the appeal. If you look at the guy's face, if you somehow know him as a person, then it's "gay". Then it's you having sex with another man, another human being. But if you just plug in and go, then it's just "getting off".

We have a Manhattan Beach, too, complete with rest stop. But the restroom got taken out a few years ago due to rising sea level and massive storm, and the state couldn't afford to put it back -- they have enough problems trying to save the US Highway.

It's an interesting take on it. I never considered that aspect of it. The cubicle wall can be described as a 'barrier' where someone can try to disassociate themselves from the MAN that they're having sex with.

I'm not an expert on the psychology of self-denial and self-delusion, but I wonder if in their minds, they're imagining that what they're seeing coming through the hole to them is just a warm Dildo A sex toy. An object that someone is carrying and holding through to them.

So are glory holes predominantly used by those that are closeted and self-denying?

Sorry, have no sympathy for them. I get panic attacks at the thought of having to use a public restroom plagued by these miscreants and maladapted.

So you're against republican senators then.

Somebody cruised me at a very nice toilet facility when I was 18. It was inside a new shopping mall, very fancy, cut off from the actual shops, and they didn't have camera's installed at the time. That quickly made it very popular with the cruising crowd.

I was oblivious; couldn't figure out what the hell he was doing. It didn't help that I went in there to change, so he probably heard me taking all my clothes off and thought "Jackpot!"

I don't know about "predominantly". Some guys use them because they get off on "impersonal" sex. I think they very readily consider themselves gay, but they might get off on thinking that there could be anybody on the other side of that partition...or a very specific somebody (different from who it actually is).

I'm hoping that at least one of these guys gets off because the arresting cop had an orgasm before he slapped the cuffs on.

It has happened before.

Who isn't?

I'm not.

There are more conservatives, or conservative-leaning people here than you think.

Me, Jack Springer, Jackoroe, PrivateTimm, Benvolio, JayHawk, Jerry, etc.

:)

I think you have to take a step back and look at the larger picture. Gay people are still far from being equal members in our society. No matter how far you think you've come, just try holding hands in a mall or giving a quick kiss goodbye to your partner in public.

Historically it has been difficult to find and connect with other gay people since we are all presumed straight and we for the most part maintain that charade. This is where cruising for public sex originated, that being a relatively reliable activity for hooking up with gay men and avoiding being bashed by straight guys.

Old habits die hard, even in the days of craigslist.

I see public sex as an outgrowth of our repression and as such, I think that they police need to handle it a little more carefully. Publishing pictures of the offenders is just a symptom of the police department's homophobia and should be condemned. I would like to see a big backlash from the gay community over this but I doubt it will happen because we all continue to be wrapped up in our own shame .

Yes and no.

I don't think we can keep on using the "we are oppressed" line to flout laws. Today, homosexuality is completely legal in all US states and same-sex marriage is increasingly finding acceptance among the US public and gradually in state laws. In California (where this sting happened), there is even more tolerance or acceptance of gay issues, compared to many other US states.

Furthermore, police departments like San Francisco Police Department and even the Los Angeles Police Department, recruit gays and lesbians to be police officers. That never happened before. There are gay men and lesbians today proudly serving in uniform.

There are times that the police overstep their boundaries. But there is no evidence that happened here.

If you want to hook up with someone, there are ways to do it that are legal and don't infringe on the public's right of access to use a public restroom for its intended purpose.

You can do it in your own home. You can rent a motel or hotel room. You can go to a "spa" (bathhouse). You can do it inside your car (with the windows up, and in a secluded place away from others).

But I do agree that there was no need to publish their names and photos. That did not accomplish anything.

So you approve of Senator Larry Craig soliciting gay sex in public washrooms while condemning it when someone else does it.

Typical right winger.

Um, no.

The question was "Are you against republican senators?"

I'm not.

But that doesn't mean that I supported Sen. Larry Craig after news about his bathroom cruising activities emerged. In fact, I'm glad that he's no longer in office. He should have resigned after the scandal broke instead of completing his term.
