I suspect that the music and crowd sound are actually more tame than the Romans built for. As for the acoustics, the ROmans weren't as concerned as the Greeks about sound getting to everyone, so that's a good question.
 
I thought I'd heard it, too - but likely at the studio instead of the stadium.
