Last summer I predicted these five artists would receive the 'Best New Artist' nomination for the 2006 Grammys:

Gnarls Barkley
James Blunt
Panic! At The Disco
Daniel Powter
Carrie Underwood

I was right on only two of those #-o Here's how the actual list went:

James Blunt
Chris Brown
Imogen Heap (you'd have to have NARAS E.S.P. for that one!)
Corinne Bailey Rae
Carrie Underwood (winner!)

So instead of narrowing it down to the five I think will get nominations (there are still 2.5 months of eligibility left), I'm gonna disect it up a bit and hope for others' insight.

DEFINITELY GETTING A NOMINATION:

Daughtry
Robin Thicke
Amy Winehouse

MAYBE GETTING A NOMINATION:

Lily Allen
Brandi Carlile
Gym Class Heroes
Plain White T's

LONG SHOTS:

Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole
Feist
Mika
Pink Martini
Taylor Swift

My long shot prediction is is that this will be the first year ever "American Idol" alumna won the 'Best New Artist' trophy in back-to-back years.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole BETTER not get a nomination. He released four albums before dying ten years ago. :)

Amy Winehouse has been around for years here in the UK - she's only came to prominence because of Back to Black - so I don't think she really counts as a 'new artist'.

I'm pretty sure Gym Class Heroes aren't a new band either.

But I always get riled at award shows when 'new' artist nominations are people who've been producing music for years.

^Ya But Amy winehouse (who by the way im a big fan of) is new to the US so i think she will probably get nominated!!

Have you guys ever heard of Shelby Lynne (clearing my throat).

She's this chick that spit out album after album and was a prominent vocalist on hits galore including several of Faith Hill's in the early 1990's. Because NARAS never nominated her in the 1990's, they finally succumbed and not only nominated her as Best New Artist but gave her the damn trophy in 2001.

maroon5 released their "Songs About Jane" album in the spring of 2003 and it even spawned the top 30 hit, "Harder To Breathe" but did NARAS nominate them as 'Best New Artist' for that year? No. It wasn't until 2005 that NARAS finally gave them the 'Best New Artist' accolade because they had the top 10 hits "This Love" and "She Will Be Loved" in 2004.

Amy Winehouse does have a shot at this trophy ... but she's not gonna get it. The last time this award went to a non-U.S. artist was way back in 1986, 22 years ago, when Sade won for "Smooth Operator."

I see Daughtry taking this one "Home" ... unless the Illinois-based Plain White T's' "Hey There Delilah" becomes massive (which it is shaping up to be). And by the way, The Plain White T's have been releasing albums since 2001. NARAS has failed to recognize any of them. Until this one.

I hate that Plain White T's re-released Hey There Delilah as a single...it was their single last summer....i mean what's the difference now that it's huge...was it not that good of a song last summer?

oh yeah...and why in the world would you even list Israel in the long shots....did he release something new this year? I mean obvi he's been dead for 10 years....and the only song I know by him is Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Yeah, bostonboy, Israel "IZ" Kamakawio'ole did release something this year: On July 3, his "Wonderful World" dropped and on the current July 14 Billboard Top 200 albums, the album debuts at No. 44.
I work at Border's Books + Music and was absolutely floored at all the phone calls we got in that week from people wanting to know if the CD was available. I had never heard of him before. That's why I put him in my 'long shots,' because I never would have thought Imogen Heap would receive a 'Best New Artist' nomination at the start of this year, either. NARAS is going to throw some act in there and we're all gonna go, "What The ???"

I would say the Plain White T's would be a shoo-in for a nomination - that song's huge - but then again, the Fray didn't get nominated last year.

silversun pickups...............but that's "sadly" NOT going to happen!!!!!](*,)

Not really a fan, but I'd bet on ROBIN THICKE winning.

LONG SHOTS:

Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole
Feist
Mika
Pink Martini
Taylor Swift

I don't understand why artists like Feist are getting nominated for Best New Artist. Feist released The Reminder - one of the best albums this year - this year, but it's her 3rd album. Her 1st album wasn't very widely distributed and its existence isn't even recognized often. Meanwhile, her 2nd album was an indie hit 3 years ago. Last year, Imogen Heap was one of the nominations despite the fact that the album for which she was nominated was released in 2005. Plus, that was her second album. Her first was released sometime in the 90s. Confused?

I wish Elliott Yamin would get nominated. Doesn't have to win, but hes awesome. But I agree Amy, Robin and Daughtry seem to be in the running.

Ya know there is too much arguing/confusion here but the point is is that just about everybody that's been nominated and/or won could be disputed.

Even this year's winner, Carrie Underwood. She won in 2007 for 2006, right? But she actually hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 in the summer of 2005 with "Inside My Heaven."

So technically shouldn't she have won in 2006? (sorry, John Legend).

There are numerous inconsistencies with the rules laid forth by NARAS; Whitney Houston; Paula Abdul, etc. never being nominated for Grammies during their debut years .... ugh.
