This past year has been absolutely awful for music in my opinion, but i'll attempt to name ten albums I enjoyed this year b/c Miaedu asked me so nicely ;)

  • Shinichi Osawa - SO2
  • Simian Mobile Disco - Delicacies

Different opinions on the state of music in 2010 but great choice guys.:-)

Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest

7.Alexisonfire-Crisis

05 Contra - Vampire Weekend

I'll be checking those out!

Also, I'm sure the National's High Violet and Joanna Newsome's Have One On Me are good, but haven't had the time yet to listen.

All in all this year didn't have so much to offer for me. I wouldn't call half of my list "top albums", but they're still alright. So here we go:

***** cds
1. Janelle Monae - The Archandroid (it seems no one does not like that cd)
2. Deftones - diamond eyes
3. Menomena - mines

****cds
4. Dead Letter Circus - this is the warning
5. Kanye West - my beautiful dark twisted fantasy
6. Gogol Bordello - trans-continental hustle (love the band, album is at times boring, which is sad, because normally that's the last word I'd associate with the band)

***cds
7. Yeasayer - odd blood (sadly, worse than their previous one, which I loved)
8. Coheed & Cambria - Year of the Black Rainbow (some great songs, some meh songs)
9. Irrepressibles - Mirror Mirror (I don't even like it as a whole, some weird shit at times, but has some beautiful songs)
10. Envy - recitation (couldn't think of another (Heligoland by Massive Attack maybe??) It's not great, but I like their combination of hardcore-similar screaming and the overall postrock feel to it. Interesting)

only a few things i REALLY stanned for this year but this is my top list

Nobody's Daughter - Hole

Good album, but the unreleased Demo's of some tracks were so much better
Pink Friday - Nicki Minaj
Good album, but a bit too much in the pop direction imo
/\/\/\Y/\ - M.I.A.
Again good album but some tracks were crazy experimental
The ARchAndroid - Janelle Monae
Above good, the way she floats between styles is amazing, a true talented artist
New Amerykah Pt2 - Erykah Badu
Very good music, more a 'vibe' record
MBDTF - Kanye West
this was just amazing
Classic - Rah Digga
Great, gave me what Pink Friday lacked, true hip hop
The Ghost Who Walks - Karen Elson
I'm surprised that i liked this so much
I'm Having Fun Now - Jenny and Johnny
fun beachy relaxed record, bigger fan of Jenny lewis than Jonathan rice though
Sex Dreams and Denim Jeans - Uffie
Not as much electro rap as i'd hoped but fun
The Lady Killer - CeeLo
fun fun fun!

3. Liars- Sisterworld

6. Film School- Fission
7. Gorillaz- Plastic Beach
8. Caribou- Swim
9. The Coral- Butterfly House
10. Clinic- Bubblegum

Most of the 10 above are bands I've loved in the past and was highly anticipating these releases from. None of them were awful, but beyond one or two great or decent tracks, I wasn't really feeling them. Some of the albums in my top 20 only have a couple good songs too, but those are newer acts and I guess I expect more from established bands I've been touting over the years. Actually Midlake really was a disappointment.

I'm gonna list 20 because I actually think 2010 was a pretty good year myself, so in Casey Kasem style, moving backwards from #20.

20- "Contra" by Vampire Weekend
While not as good as their self titled debut it is still pretty damn good. But is anyone as sick of "Holiday" as I am right now?

19-"Plastic Beach" by Gorillaz
I wasn't sure how this would fare without the input of producer Danger Mouse, but I had nothing to worry about, great CD. (anyone downloading their free Christmas CD tomorrow?)

18-"Broken Bells" by Broken Bells
The reason why Danger Mouse was too busy for the Gorillaz. This collaboration with James Mercer of The Shins was just fantastic.

17-"The Place We Run From" by Tired Pony
This collaboration by Peter Buck of R.E.M. & Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol made for the best Non-country country CD this year.

16-"My World 2.0." by Justin Bieber
Hah, just wanted to see if you were paying attention.

16-"Treats" by Sleigh Bells
This CD sounds like 2 very different sounding bands were recording next door to each other but somehow got blended together. It's noisy and sometimes messy but also gorgeously melodic.

15-"Transference" by Spoon
This band just continues to make great record after great record.

14-"Congratulations" by MGMT
They could never pull of the quirky brilliance of Oracular Spectacular a second time, but they came pretty damn close. "The Youth" is one of my favorite singles of 2010.

13-"Cold Day Memory" by Sevendust
One of my favorite metal bands of all time put out one of the best CD's of their great career, I may be the only one who noticed.

12-"High Violet" by The National
Matt Berninger's voice is like nothing you hear in pop music, it's haunting and his almost talk/sing approach makes every song unique. The fact that the songs as written are brilliant doesn't hurt.

11-"The Sea" by Corrine Bailey Rae
It took a long time for her to release her sophomore CD after her brilliant self titled debut back in 2006. Her husband had shockingly passed away in the interim. This CD is filled with songs about that loss and it is as sad a CD as you will hear and is stunningly beautiful and emotional.

10-"Come Around Sundown" by Kings Of Leon
Their previous CD, "Only By The Night" was my favorite CD of 2008. This isn't as good, but their bar was set so high that it could never be. I think that there is something of a media backlash against them for becoming as big as they did, not to mention a bizarre selling out rep they've developed in some hipper than thou music blogs which really isn't fair IMHO.

9-"Brothers" by Black Keys
Modern blues by a pair of musicians who truly love what they do, and I love it right back.

8-"A Thousand Suns" by Linkin Park
Their darkest record, a couple of the tracks literally gave me chills.

7-"Danger Days" by My Chemical Romance
Boy has this CD been the subject of utter vilification just about everywhere (there is a whole thread right here on JUB devoted to knocking it). Well I think it's fucking brilliant, a great pop record. Is it as ambitious as "Black Parade" or as haunting as "Three Cheers"? No it's not, but it is more melodic and dare I say less pretentious than those previous efforts. "Sing" is a kick ass anthem.

6-"The Winter of Mixed Drink" by Frightened Rabbit
Wow what a great CD, it wraps around you like a musical blanket. Get this now.

5-"The ArchAndroid" by Janelle Monáe
2010's best dance record. JM is brilliantly melding the genre's of rock/pop/soul and dance for this generation the way Prince did for the last. I predict that she will be one of the biggest pop stars on the planet in 5 years.

4-"Odd Blood" by Yeasayer
Most musical acts start mainstream and move into more exotic and experimental sounds as they release more music (Hello Radiohead), this band went in the other direction, and damn if it didn't pay off.

3-"My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy" by Kanye West
When I first heard this my jaw dropped. The more Kanye the man becomes a loose cannon the more Kanye the artist becomes the greatest innovator in hip hop's history. How can a man have all that power?

2-"Suburbs" by Arcade Fire
This CD (like all their CD's) is just so brilliant. The ambitiousness of this band is breathtaking, every song is an adventure. "Rococo" is a song I played over and over again for weeks. I want them to release another CD already, I can't wait.

1-"Infinite Arms" by Band of Horses
Stunning, beautiful, moving...there are not enough adjectives to describe this CD's greatness, I'm listening to it right now as I type this in fact. This is my favorite CD of 2010 because no other has obsessed me like this one has, wherever I am or whatever I am doing, this CD more than any other of 2010 has been on.

Honorable mentions: "Interpol" by Interpol, "Personal Life" by The Thermals, "Habits" by Neon Trees (I defy you to name a catchier tune this year than "Animal"), "Of the Blue Colour of the Sky" by OK GO, "Teen Dream" by Beach House, "In The Dark" by The Whigs, "Audio Secrecy" by Stone Sour, "Lady Killer" by Cee Lo Green ("fuck you" got a lot of hype, but this whole CD is awesome), "Invented" by Jimmy Eat World, "The Union" by Elton John & Leon Russell, "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry (no I'm not kidding), "This is Happening" by LCD Soundsystem and "Recovery" by Eminem.

1-Joe McElderry "Wide Awake"
2-Cheryl Cole "Messy Little Raindrops"
3-The Saturdays "Headlines!"
4-Kylie Minogue "Aphrodite"
5-Taylor Swift "Speak Now"
6-Girlicious "Rebuilt"
7-Nadine "Insatiable"
8-Christina Aguilera "Bionic"
9-Sugababes "Sweet 7"
10-Rihanna "Loud"

CaptainMellow, i'm glad to see someone else loved the Frightened Rabbit album as much as i did! no Big Boi though :[

I gotta be honest with you ND, I have never been a BB guy. Whenever I would listen to an Outkast record it was always Dre's stuff that got me & not his. To me BB has always been just another pretty good MC. In fact, even though I put Janelle Monae in my top 10, I thought "Tightrope" which features BB is the weakest track on the CD and in part because of him. To be fair, I have never listened to the full CD, just a few tracks here & there.

Hip Hop is not my favorite genre, so for me to like it, it has to be something that grabs me the way Kanye's did. I see you have Drake in your top list, and I wanted to like his CD but I just couldn't (I actually did listen to all of his). When I saw Jay Z & Eminem at Yankee Stadium earlier this year he was the only guest act I didn't like. I even gave him a second chance at Voodoofest in New Orleans in October, but the best I could say is...meh. He is kinda cute though LOL.

Tell you what, I'll give "Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty" a real listen and tell you what I think.

CptM, i understand if you're not a fan of BB, but i've always been a big fan. for me, BB's album was immediately brilliant. "Shine Blockas" is one of the best tracks of the year and "General Patton" is so great. i actually would agree that Kanye's album is better and more important, but i enjoy BB's better... and the more i listen to Ye's, it might be higher on my list. Drake's album really had to grow on me, but after listening to "Over" and "Miss Me" a lot, i branched out and the rest of the album really grew on me. it is a very odd hip-hop album.

what's your favorite track on Winter Of Mixed Drinks?

Can I cheat and say all of them? LOL. If...if...I had to choose just one, I'll go with "Living In Color" but I really love "Nothing Like You" as well.

ND, I gotta ask cause I know what a Thermals fan you are, howcome "Personal Life" didn't make it?

^ Living In Color" is probably my favorite too! such a fantastic song.

i need to listen to Personal Life more... i do love The Thermals, but nothing on this album stood out enough to make me want to listen to it a lot. i think i listened to it on repeat the day it came out and a couple times after, but that's it. i didn't want to put it in my top 10 (or 20) just because i love the band. it is on my list of stuff from this year to listen to more though.

Ok finally put together my list....different from the Last.fm list I posted earlier:

The Top 10 are pretty accurate and the rest are more so Honorable Mentions in no specific order

1. Robyn - Body Talk
2. Hurts - Happiness
3. Bruno Mars - Doo Wops and Hooligans
4. 2am Club - What Did You Think Was Going To Happen
5. Bad Rabbits - Stick up Kids EP
6. Sia - We Are Born
7. The Wonder Years - The Upsides
8. Erik Hassle - Pieces
9. Simon Curtis - 8-Bit Heart
10. Kelis - Flesh Tone
11. We Are The In Crowd - Guaranteed to Disagree
12. Sleigh Bells - Treats
13. Ellie Goulding - Lights/Bright Lights
14. Punchline - Delightfully Pleased
15. Miami Horror - Illumination
16. Far East Movement - Free Wired
17. Rihanna - LOUD
18. Taylor Swift - Speak Now
19. Outasight - Never Say Never
20. You, Me and Everyone We Know - Some Things Don't Wash Out

just one for me this year:

Janelle Monae - ArchAndroid

i feel like i'm the only music fan who isn't head-over-heals for Janelle Monae's album. there are a few songs i can listen to all day, but a lot of it that just sounds kind of immature. i feel like it's a good album that shows a lot of potential, but still an album full of under-developed ideas that are kind of all over the place.

^ also, on the subject of The ArchAndroid, i think that "Oh, Maker" is hands down the best song on the album and the one i've listened to the most.

hmmm i cant say that i have a top 10 albums of 2010, but i will say that i find it interesting noone on here has iron maiden listed anywhere! their new album, the final frontier seems to be the only standout album of 2010 for me personally
