Patti Smith to Release Her First LP in Eight Years in June

Album will include tunes written for Amy Winehouse, Johnny Depp

Patti Smith has just announced details of her 11th studio album, her first collection of original material since 2004's trampin'. Banga will be out on June 5th through Columbia Records. The first single from the album, "April Fool," featuring Television's Tom Verlaine, was released today on iTunes.

Smith recorded Banga at Electric Lady Studios in New York City. In a statement, the singer-songwriter says the new album was inspired by her dreams as well as her observations of an increasingly complex and chaotic world:

"There is an exploratory spirit in the songs that make up Banga, including a melodic overture imagining the voyage of Amerigo Vespucci to the New World in 1497 ('Amerigo'), a rock song for the people of Japan in the wake of last years earthquake ('Fuji-san'), a classic ballad in memory of Amy Winehouse ('This Is the Girl'), an improvised meditation on art and nature ('Constantine's Dream') as well as a birthday song written for her friend Johnny Depp ('Nine')."

The album was recorded with Smith's regular collaborators, Tony Shanahan, Jay Dee Daugherty and Lenny Kaye; featured guests include Tom Verlaine, Jack Petruzzelli and Smith's own children, Jackson and Jesse Paris.

Smith will be joining CBS correspondent Anthony Mason for a live, in-studio conversation at noon. Watch the live stream of the interview here:

Moritz Von Oswald Trio will return in June with an album for Honest Jon's entitled Fetch.

The album is Moritz von Oswald, Sasu Ripatti (AKA Vladislav Delay) and Max Loderbauer's third studio outing, and is described in a press release as showcasing a "darker and more driving mood" than previous work. The album was recorded in the late summer of last year and features live contributions from Marc Muellbauer (bass) and Tobias Freund (effects). Instrumental overdubs, meanwhile, come courtesy of Jonas Schoen (flute, bass clarinet, saxophone) and trumpeter Sebastian Studnitzky.

The basic recording sessions for the album apparently only lasted four hours, pointing towards yet another live and fluid set of tracks that values improvisation over careful deliberation. Nonetheless, von Oswald is keen to stress that each cut is a separate entity—something made obvious by the non-uniformity of the track titles. (Previous albums featured similar titles like "Pattern 1," "Pattern 2," etc.)
