2012 New York Auto Show!!! (car lovers)

Jay, that's exactly my grip with carmakers nowadays
If Ferrari makes a turd shaped car it will sell (look at the FF), because it has the prancing horse badge on it.

Carmakers used to have their distinctive selling point
Now Mercedes sells city cars, Porshe sells SUVs, Aston Martin sells a rebranded Toyota (Cygnet), and Land Rover sells convertible cars
What a fucking mess.........

Well, it all comes down the almighty dollar (or pound, or euro, or whatever your currency is). If people will buy it, they will make it. If not enough people buy it, they will get rid of it.

Right now, SUVs are all the rage (at least in the US). Most SUV 4x4s never leave the pavement or go into the wilderness. You will find them however, at your nearest grocery store or shopping mall parking lot.

I read somewhere that over 50% of all new Porsche sales in North America was for its SUV, the Cayenne.

So clearly if Porsche is making a big profit on its SUV, they are going to keep making SUVs.

I'll be there on Tuesday. The Javits center is an enormous venue. Wear comfortable shoes if you go, no heels!

Ooooo!

Have fun Jackoroe!

If you take any pics or see anything really cool, let us know or post the pics here :)

That's exactly what annoys me.
That's just commercial prostitution, Personally, I care about a brand tradition.

This kind of mentality produced this lovely piece of crap.

Unfortunately a Bentley SUV will sell..

I can tell you that will probably become the next favorite car of the Hollywood & Hip-Hop elite.

Expect to see Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, et al driving it.

And it will probably be featured, with some scantily clad women, in a music video for 50 cent, Kanye, JayZ, Lil Jon, or some other Hip-Hop/Rapper.

I love Honda/Acura vehicles and I'm especially excited to see the debut of the '14 Acura RL. It's been long overdue for a change. I hope Acura really pulls out all the stops on this one and gets it right. They've been struggling up until the very recent past.

The problem with Acura is that they have never been as serious as Lexus about competing with Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi.

The Lexus LS is considered a competitor to the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7 Series and Audi A7.

If Acura wants to be considered a serious competitor to those brands, they have to make the RL bigger and have a V-8 option. The Lexus LS comes standard with a V-8.

But Honda/Acura doesn't make any V-8 engines.

The Acuras have far more urgent issues than having a V-8 option.
They need to hire a decent lead designer
The last few years Acura sported the worst car design in decades, and considering that it is supposed to be Honda premium brand but look worse than a cheaper Honda Accord, it is not surprise it can't compete with the likes of BMW or Audi............maybe they should make a SUV, it seems to be everyone solution to poor sales issues nowadays :D

I remember when my dad was going buy a viper, and couldnt fit it and bought a SS trans-am. was kind funny but still an awesome car. I seen a couple GTRs in KC their defiantly sexy cars. Im looking forward, to seeing the new Scion FR-S

Acura does make an SUV. In fact, they make 2. The first is the MDX and the second one which has just been redesigned is the RDX. They are both sales winners for Acura. Just read the specs on the '14 RL (now called the RLX). Still has a V6 engine, however, it comes with some serious power now......370hp to be exact and it's fuel rating is 30mpg city and 30mpg highway. Pretty impressive stats in my opinion. It's touted to have V8 performance with "better than 4 cylinder" economy. The new pics of it show a larger yet still fairly conservative body style. I think 370 hp combined with 30 mpg is going to get some attention. Currently, there's no car that comes close to offering those numbers.

regarding the value of cars when buying new, I prefer to see it in this way;

I am obsessive about my mechanical possessions. I want to know exactly when the oil was changed and with what, what fuel it took all its life, service measurements.

Additionally I have the skills as an ex-detailer (still occasionally do some friends cars) so my cars are always taken care of from new.

Aside from the dent from some bastard in a parking lot, Stone chips from 40 000K on the highway, my car looks brand new.

Its my baby, and thats more value than a second hand car thats already been tainted by someone elses farts and lack of care.

When it comes to buying new, vs. buying used (or "pre-owned")

It comes down to personal preference, and what you can afford.

It's nice to have a brand new car that has less than 20 miles on the odometer. Plus who doesn't like the "new car smell"?

But new cars depreciate in value the most, during the first 2 years of ownership. So financially, you could perhaps get a better deal on a slightly used car.

Also, someone who perhaps might not be able to afford to buy a Mercedes-Benz and BMW brand new, might be able to afford to buy it used. So for them, buying used might be the only reasonable way to afford a Mercedes-Benz, BMW, or other expensive car.

 I know I'm ignorant about motor-cars but why would some depreciate at different rates at others?

Reminds me of a 60's Plymouth Valiant.

Generally it's all down to build quality.
When a car it's new, you don't know if it's going to be realiable until 1-2 years down the line.
Once the public knows there is a problem with that particular model/brand, it loses a lot of its value
Chrysler had a big quality issue with its cars for the last 10 years, which almost cause its demise 2 years ago.

depreciation doesn't bother me, I buy and own till they die. It is more of a concern that I am completely anal about how things I own are maintained.

if I was going to buy a new car every 2 years or a new motorbike every year then yes I would buy something with less depreciation (and more likely demo models etc)

I was in the car biz for awhile, and have bought new and used. Some I kept for 10yr. or more, and some I had for only a year, or so. The ones I kept the longest were the ones that truly "Spoke" to me! The others seemed like they did, at first, but then let me down somehow.

Three cars ago, I began leasing new. That way, I got the chance to find out if we'd "Bond", or not. My current car, a 2008 Dodge Avenger R/T, with AWD, I bought at lease end. It was the only year the Avengers had AWD, and was at the peak of the Daimler/Chrysler relationship. It's interior is Mercedes designed, and it's AWD is the Mercedes "4 Matic" system. It's not too big, and it's HO 3.5L Six packs a very nice "Punch"! It's 6 Speed Automatic can also be "slap" shifted.

A bonus was it's predetermined buy out was less than what used ones were going for. ..|

I'm thinking that "He" and I (yes, this one's definitely Male), are going to be together for a long, long, time! (group)
