2014 MLB thread

Saucy I too was thrilled for the Giants and OMG did that error committed in the 9th add to the excitement of a 7 game series

So the question now becomes are the Giants who have played in 3 World Series games in the last 5 years become now a full blown Dynasty. You have be to be impressed by way they have played after building a team in the right way and give this team the credit they deserve there is no end on site for them. Yes I know they have not yet won as consecutively as the Yankees, Yet!

Another big question for the Giants is where will this guy be next year now a free agent

Yes KB that's impressive but I think they would notice if you took that trophy home

I'm glad for San Francisco. The wild card is there for a purpose and they were the ones along with Kansa City who took advantage of it. The model they have is probably a better bet than the loaded superstars roster model...sorry, Players Association.. fat contracts are only good for players and agents wallets, but not necessary to building a winning formula at all. If it's a low rated World Series, shame on baseball fans. I was so happy for the Giants players and Madison Bumgarner going five innings in relief getting the win after two spectacular starts did a pitching tour de force for the ages. Kansas City gave as good as it got going seven games for this to be decided, something in the last quarter century has happened 8 times. We got a competitive, thrilling WS and I congratulate the San Francisco Giants on a wonderful year, and who can say they didn't get a kick out of Pedro Sandoval's getting the last out? What a fun player, inspiring and a post season dynamo!

And thanks to the KC Royals for a thrilling ride returning to the WS stage 29 years after their 1985 triumph against the Cardinals. We're too spoiled here in the New York area, expecting big names and big money to dominate the stage and there are some really good players on the Giants especially who make good money. More importantly though they have balance and chemistry, which clubs going for the rings like the Dodgers, Angels, Tigers, Yankees through checkbook baseball should ponder.

The Yankees dynasty of the late 90 did use the checkbook but they used the farm system even more.
But a system like that takes times, something not allowed for certain teams like the Yankees, which is a shame. Even in 09 when the Yankes whipped out the checkbook, it was still products from our farm system that carried the day.

I loved the Yankees teams of that era.... there were stars but mainly those who we traded for or developed in our system. And one of the best from outside the system was Paul O'Neill, who when the Yanks got him from the Reds had potential but only emerged into a star with the Yankees. Tino Martinez was a good young player too but just establishing himself as a star player when the Yanks got him.Of Course they brought in some established stars too ..David Cone, Darryl Strawberry, Chuck Knoblauch,Cecil Fielder, Mike Mussina, Roger Clemens(most infamously) who helped us get championships but for the most part those great Yankee teams were heavily influenced by a core of(Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera).

I'm basically talking of what the Yankees have been doing after that... they HAD to go after Randy Johnson, Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez... they reverted to the worst Steinbrenner impulses and to this day the Yanks are expected to be around 200 mil in their player budget. I saw stuff recently about some young players who are finally developing after a long drought of impact Yankee farm players so hopefully they can develop enough of them and make judicious trades rather than always try to make the big spending move.

Indeed, we made the same mistakes in the 2000's that we had made in the late 80's early 90's.
Let's hope that has changed and that in a couple of years, we'll be good again.

One big contributor who also was a great role player rather than flat out star I can't believe I forgot was Scott Brosius, who only had one great year with the Yankees in 1998 but was a clutch player when it counted, a strong defensive third baseman and great character guy for the clubhouse. The Yankees hopefully Ninja are moving away from the star overload of the past decade and more in line with developing their own, good trades for high character, low maintenance players like Brosius with the occasional big name instead of trying to assemble a roster of All Stars. It's been done time and again in recent years... middle level teams in terms of salary getting to and winning the WS. Teams don't have to break the bank to win.

Indeed they don't. I don't like the Wild Card System but it does give a couple of more teams a chance to win.

Wasn't the Yankees first championship in the post 80's era from a wild card position? I do like the wild card not because I don't want the best records to get to the WS but I don't want it a given that will happen. It would be better though to have teams that can win about 90 games or so getting into the WS but if a team can get through the divisional and league playoffs they have earned the right to compete for the WS trophy. I do wish the second wild card could be 2 out of 3.... winning one game just kinda makes getting into the playoffs anticlimactic.
