Well, no, actually. There are several different figures from reputable sources posted on line for California, for example. Some of which are missing/disregard as many as 1.5 million people.

Maybe the 45,747 figure on the list are part of the missing 1.5 million Californians and we should disregard them, too? [Rolls eyes]

Numbers/statistics are important, or they're not. Which will you have?

First off, and leaving aside the fact that 1.5 million might be a bigger deal for a citizen of a country under 40 million than for anyone considering total populations over 300 million :lol: :cool: :mrgreen: we are dealing with REPORTED cases: if you allow that there are THOUSANDS of unreported cases, you can deal with 1.5 million gap over an approximate total of 40 million in a population census.

Then, one can not expect to find the same sort of problems with accurate population reporting in a highly dynamic region like California and in any other godforsaken backwater, even accounting for sloppy local census agencies.

Finally, one may have expected your comment be focused on ACCURACY, because maybe all that mess with numbers and statistics derives from people who considered them important, without extending that to accuracy: in other terms, people who will have both numbers/statistics being important, and not being so that much.

Only if you're looking at it statistically. The danger with Florida is not just its total case numbers. It's that Florida is a vacation spot that has a large number of international visitors and a large number of people who have seasonal homes out of State.

Florida's fully vaccinated rate is only 48%. And it has a governor that is putting his own political ambitions above the health of Americans.

It's like if you took Barcelona (including all the docks prepared for mega-cruise ships) and put copies of it all along the coast from from Andorra to San Sebastián. And then for fun, make 4-5 copies of Ibiza and put those along the coast. Then offered a special housing discount to all the retirees in Europe so that they all move there.

Spain has plenty of DeSantis-esque political idiots to pick to put in charge of it all. :)

Comments on this week's stats:
  • India's cases and death statistics are believed to be grossly under-reported. Based upon estimates of India's statistics, they are, by far, the #1 country for cases and deaths.
  • Brazil's statistics are also believed to be under-reported.
  • Based upon the reported numbers, the US has moved back into the #1 position for new cases for the past week. This reflects the growth of the delta variant, which now accounts for 83% of the new cases in the US. Although there have been break-through infections in people who are vaccinated, of the people who are presenting to hospitals with symptoms of COVID-19, 97% were not vaccinated.
  • The US is still under-testing and, in particular, the US is still not doing enough testing for variants.
  • UK, Ireland, Japan and Australia are reporting increased cases.

Wait, I thought that 56% was of people vaccinated with two doses? Does really that rate of regions like Missouri reflect the rate for the whole country?

Research came out that indicates that people who are infected with the delta variant produce a viral load that is up to 1,000 higher than the original strain that circulated in the winter of 2020. This explains why delta variant is so much more transmissible that the original virus and its earlier variants. It also explains why the virus swept through India so quickly. It also explains why the delta variant replaced the alpha variant so quickly as the predominant strain in the US.

Since first appearing in India in late 2020, the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 has become the predominant strain in much of the world. Researchers might now know why Delta has been so successful: people infected with it produce far more virus than do those infected with the original version of SARS-CoV-2, making it very easy to spread...

In a preprint posted 12 July, the researchers report that virus was first detectable in people with the Delta variant four days after exposure,compared with an average of six days among people with the original strain, suggesting that Delta replicates much faster. Individuals infected with Delta also had viral loads up to 1,260 times higher than those in people infected with the original strain.

The combination of a high number of viruses and a short incubation period makes sense as an explanation for Delta’s heightened transmissibility, says epidemiologist Benjamin Cowling at the University of Hong Kong. The sheer amount of virus in the respiratory tract means that superspreading events are likely to infect even more people, and that people might begin spreading the virus earlier after they become infected.
