I don't think "they're" promoting 'panic'. More like advising us, and hopefully creating informed concern. If it is a result of covid infection, even losing one kid, related and/or known to me, or not, is one too many, especially if following sound advice has been ignored, poo-pooed away, sloughed off.

Wear a mask. Keep your distance. Wash your paws. Protect yourself, and those around you, Including kids.

Reduce the number of those who wrongly think, and blithely shrug, "No prob!" They are the ones aiding, and abetting, an invisible, Known, mass killer.

Precisely. No one is advising panic.

But there are a lot of people (many with children) out there who have come to think that this is just a disease that culls the herd of the elderly...and that for kids...it might just be the equivalent of a bad cold. You see them protesting that they aren't being allowed to congregate in their play parks or just do whatever they want.

It might save some lives...or long term effects from COVID...if parents of young kids are scared enough to make sure they are simply taking proper precautions, instead of thinking their children immune from the worst effects of a mutating virus.

If it makes them scared enough to wash their hands, wear a mask, use proper physical distancing and stop whining about not being able to get their hair done...then that can only be a good thing.

The US (3816)has now surpassed Italy (3547) for total cases per million (with about 24K tests per million versus Italy's 38K tests per million). It is closing in on Belgium and Ireland, both with much smaller populations but very high caseloads per million and a ways to go to reach Spain's 5426 cases per million (with 41K tests per million).

The US also has a huge number of active (975K) versus recovered (213K) cases at this point, compared to Italy where the numbers are now about equal or Spain where recovered cases now far outnumber active cases.

Unless some kind of magic happens, this suggests that the US is going to be seeing horrific numbers over the next month. While the US is now reporting a dip in new active cases...this number will be less and less trustworthy in the absence of the scale of testing like in Spain....and reports that some states are now purposefully under-reporting or telling coroners not to report COVID deaths.

"They're" not promoting panic, but some media may be by putting the story front and center, suggesting it's a well-thought out reason to keep schools closed or promoting the idea that it presents a statistically meaningful threat of death or harm to children.

The new reaction has made headlines across the globe, but John stresses that it’s not a call for panic. “This is obviously still a very, very rare presentation,” she says, adding that she has heard of approximately 30 cases in Europe, 15 in New York and under two dozen others. “We’re talking less than a hundred children, even though we know there have been millions of cases of COVID-19,” John says. “So I think we can all be pretty reassured that this is an exceptionally uncommon outcome for children.”

Is this really a story that needs widespread public attention right now?

A couple of other things to look at in today's numbers:
  1. Russia has now moved up into the #4 position for number of cases. A week ago on 30-Apr, Russia had 106,498 cases. Today they have 177,160 cases. They're also lying about their death count. With that number of cases, there's no way that Russia has only as 1,625 deaths.
  2. Brazil is a tinderbox for pandemics. We knew this from previous epidemics like their meningitis epidemics in the 1970s. A week ago, on 30-Apr Brazil had 79,685 cases. Today, they have 126,611 cases. They are another country that elected a populist leader, Jair Bolsonaro, in 2018. Bolsonaro is a coronavirus denier, in spite of the fact that his cabinet exposed multiple US politicians when they visited Miami and Palm Beach in March.

At some point....I suspect that even the US will start to complain about other 'allies' like Russia and Brazil fudging their numbers because the US is going to look like a huge failure for Trump while the minimal deaths will look like a huge victory for Putin and Bolsonaro. Although, I still keep expecting the US to take the superpower route like China and just shut down reporting in order to hide just how bad it gets. I give it another week or so before real suppression of data becomes national policy.

In the meantime though...every chart tells a story and this one shows what happens when their is control and management and when there isn't.

The trend lines for cases per day shows the rather interesting phenomenon of what is happening in the US relative to other hard hit nations and what is happening within the US as NY cases drop and the other areas of the country increase..

Hopefully this will still be here on VOX in a few weeks because it will be even more interesting to see what happenings to the new cases reported as the states are re-opening and, as we saw on the weekend, New Yorkers seem ready to abandon themselves to ignoring precautions when congregating in public spaces.

No... ope: it's easier to say that it all went the wrong way in the USA because of the democ rats, the liberal gay media and the atheists, while God-fearing Bolsonaro and Putin were allowed to go their way through the pandemic saving their people.

The genetic studies of the virus are telling the story of how the virus got so out of control in the US.

No, it wasn't China. So, all the talk about the "travel ban" on China is pointless. Most of the active cases in the US originated in New York. Most of the cases in New York originated in Europe.

When the epidemic got out of control in New York City, thousands of people left NYC to go elsewhere. Some return to homes in New York State but many were consultants and tourists who left New York and returned home to other states.

Travelers from New York City sparked second coronavirus wave: report [The Hill]
Travelers leaving New York City for various locations around the U.S. were responsible for much of the spread of a second wave of the coronavirus in the country, according to findings from scientists.

The New York Times reported Thursday that researchers tracking the genetic makeup of the virus now believe that many scattered outbreaks in localities around the U.S. had their roots in New York, where city residents fled lockdown orders and likely spread the disease.

“It means that we missed the boat early on, and the vast majority in this country is coming from domestic spread,” Kristian Andersen, a microbiology and immunology professor at Scripps Research, told the Times. “I keep hearing that it’s somebody else’s fault. That’s not true. It’s not somebody else’s fault, it’s our own fault.”

There's another graphic that I think the Times did that clearly shows that NYC is distorting the US numbers making it look like the US numbers are getting better.

New York and New Jersey are distorting the curve. People in the US aren't connecting that we have two problems-
  1. Large states with high case numbers but low growth
  2. Small states with low case number but high growth

The growth rate is getting lower in New York and New Jersey. It's still spreading in the middle of the country.

What is so maddening at the moment is that we have states with high case counts that are enforcing quarantine to stop the growth of their cases. But their case counts are so high, that even a 1% growth in their cases results in thousands of new cases each day.

On the opposite end of this are smaller states that are not getting their growth under control. They have growth rates of 4-10%. Because they have smaller populations and they are early in their epidemic, the high growth rates appear to just add a few hundred new cases. Of course, the problem is that these are exponential growth curves. It just takes a week or so for the case numbers to double.

Below are 3 states that have dramatically lowered their growth (New York, New Jersey, Michigan). New York had a 0.9% increase yesterday but that's 0.9% of 321,192 cases and it translates to 2,786 new cases.

There are also 3 states that have growth rates that are out of control (Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska). For example, Minnesota had a 9.3% increase in their cases yesterday. Because that's 9.5% of 7,851, so it is 728 new cases which doesn't look as bad as the 2,786 in New York.

In Australia,

The Australian cases in late January and early February were from the original China strains. Since mid-March, Australia has had strains in circulation from both China and Europe.

Millions of us are praying.
