On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

If there is a vaccine, I wonder which country will be the first to discover it.

The world health organization should award whichever country that came out with a vaccine some incentives.

This will encourage many countries to came out with a vaccine quickly.

^ You mean the first to come up with THE vaccine, or with just ANY vaccine.

The point of the first vaccine being available is to cash in on the exclusivity, then the truly effective ones may follow. The US is always poised for a better "be the first, not the best, because the first can always be taken for the best, anyway", case.

Brazil confirmed cases today is 310,087 but the actual count is probably much higher. They're reporting 20,047 deaths (a 6% mortality) which would imply their actual case count is closer to 1 million. The ICUs in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are full. Brazil's PM is still running around the country promoting "reopen".

CNN's report on Bolsonaro's "little flu".

And just to call out the specifics on the combination that Trump has been claiming that he's taking- hydrochloroquine + azithromyicin:

Antimalarial drug touted by President Trump is linked to increased risk of death in coronavirus patients, study says [WaPo]
Nearly 15,000 of the 96,000 patients in the analysis were treated with hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine alone or in combination with a type of antibiotics known as a macrolide, such as azithromycin or clarithromycin, within 48 hours of their diagnosis.

The difference between patients who received the antimalarials and those who did not was striking.

For those given hydroxychloroquine, there was a 34 percent increase in risk of mortality and a 137 percent increased risk of a serious heart arrhythmias. For those receiving hydroxychloroquine and an antibiotic — the cocktail endorsed by Trump — there was a 45 percent increased risk of death and a 411 percent increased risk of serious heart arrhythmias.

Those given chloroquine had a 37 percent increased risk of death and a 256 percent increased risk of serious heart arrhythmias. For those taking chloroquine and an antibiotic, there was a 37 percent increased risk of death and a 301 percent increased risk of serious heart arrhythmias.

Jesus wept.

No wonder that FOX has at least one of their bobbleheads screaming at viewers NOT to take this drug as a prophylactic. They are likely terrified that their Trumpist base will sue them if they indicate any support for Trump's reckless and baseless experiment.

What do you have to lose?

Your life, apparently.

So, I killed my first mosquito of the year and am wondering if there's a possibility that they can transmit the virus.

Really CDC?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) acknowledged Thursday that it is combining the results from viral and antibody COVID-19 tests when reporting the country's testing totals, despite marked differences between the tests.

First reported by NPR's WLRN station in Miaimi, the practice has drawn ire from U.S. health experts who say combining the tests inhibits the agency's ability to discern the country's actual testing capacity.

Below is an interview with Dr Peter Piot- a physician expert on viruses and director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He talks about where things are with the epidemic and hopes for a vaccine. He also contracted COVID-19, so he offers perspective on his own experience with the virus.

Update on cases in US States:

Georgia's 7 day average daily cases for week ending:
  • 04-Apr 538
  • 11-Apr 842 +56.3%
  • 18-Apr 796 -5.4%
  • 25-Apr 723 -9.2%
  • 02-May 749 +3.6%
  • 09-May 636 -15.1%
  • 16-May 656 +3.2%
  • 23-May 673 +2.6%

Georgia was one of the last to put a stay-at-home order in place and one of the first to lift it. Within two weeks of the stay-at-home order, their new cases decreased and over the course of the month of April, Georgie went from 842 avg/day down to 636 avg/day. Since the order was lifted, they have seen a modest increase in new cases, although there has been some questioning of the accuracy of their reporting.

Texas' 7 day average daily cases for week ending:
  • 04-Apr 614
  • 11-Apr 910 +48.1%
  • 18-Apr 812 -10.8%
  • 25-Apr 795 -2.1%
  • 02-May 899 +13.1%
  • 09-May 1,043 +15.9%
  • 16-May 1,233 +18.2%
  • 23-May 1,096 -11.1%
Texas lifted their stay-at-home order on 1-May. Their cases were already trending upward and they went from an average of 795 cases per day to 1,096 cases per day. They have a mix between outbreaks in rural areas where their meatpacking plants and prisons are located and in their urban areas like Dallas and Houston.

Arkansas ' 7 day average daily cases for week ending:
  • 04-Apr 50
  • 11-Apr 66 +31.8%
  • 18-Apr 70 +6.2%
  • 25-Apr 159 +126.2%
  • 02-May 71 -55.2%
  • 09-May 62 -12.6%
  • 16-May 102 +63.8%
  • 23-May 164 +60.5%
Arkansas' governor was out and about in April justifying why he never put a stay-at-home order in place. They are now having some outbreaks including a cluster from a high school swim party. In two weeks, their cases have increased 123%. With nearby states like Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas with no stay-at-home order, Arkansas will likely see increases from now on.

California's 7 day average daily cases for week ending:
  • 04-Apr 1,244
  • 11-Apr 1,272 +2.2%
  • 18-Apr 1,145 -9.9%
  • 25-Apr 1,704 +48.8%
  • 02-May 1,555 - +8.8%
  • 09-May 1,649 +6.0%
  • 16-May 1,875 +13.7%
  • 23-May 1,961 +4.6%
In spite of California's early and aggressive stay-at-home order, Los Angeles county has been unable to control the spread of the virus. The state has 90,628 cases with 43,052 of the cases originating in Los Angeles county. LA county has had over 2,000 deaths which hints that there are many undiagnosed cases. In L.A. County, 426 out of every 100,000 people have tested positive for COVID-19, compared with 270 in San Francisco. In L.A., 20 out of every 100,000 residents have died of COVID-19, compared with 4 in San Francisco.

New York's 7 day average daily cases for week ending:
  • 04-Apr 8,362
  • 11-Apr 10,189 +21.8%
  • 18-Apr 8,701 -14.6%
  • 25-Apr 5,171 -40.6%
  • 02-May 5,246 +1.5%
  • 09-May 3,156 -39.8%
  • 16-May 2,201 -30.3%
  • 23-May 1,763 -19.9%
New Yorkers had a brutal experience in March and April which has led to increased compliance with stay-at-home, physical distancing and mask compliance. And it shows in their numbers. They still have a high number of new cases - averaging 1,763/day for this week but that is a significant improvement from their peak of 10,189 cases/day 6 weeks ago.

Wisconsin's 7 day average daily cases for week ending:
  • 04-Apr 167
  • 11-Apr 151 -9.7%

  • 09-May 325 +16.2%
  • 16-May 299 -8.0%
  • 23-May 387 +29.4%
Wisconsin's cases decreased in early April, then they increased significantly in early May. Then the case counts started decreasing until the state's Legislature sued to undo their governor's stay-at-home order. Their new cases jumped nearly 30% this week.

Florida's 7 day average daily cases for week ending:
  • 04-Apr 1,011
  • 11-Apr 1,100 +8.8%
  • 18-Apr 970 -11.8%
  • 25-Apr 825 -15.0%
  • 02-May 599 -27.3%
  • 09-May 639 +6.6%
  • 16-May 706 +10.5%
  • 23-May 759 +7.6%
Florida's numbers look like a case study in what happens when quarantine is terminated too early. They cut their new cases from 1,011 to 599 via stay-at-home orders. Now they're back up to 759 new cases/day for the past week.

I just afraid that this will last very long , probably until next year or maybe longer than that.
