In his May 20 presser, Ducey laid out his case for re-opening Arizona. He pointed to the White House's guidance "Opening Up America Again" and the implementation guidelines provided by the CDC, using them to argue that Arizona met the gating criteria for moving into Phase One of the White House plan.

The problem is that Arizona did not then, and does not now, meet these criteria.

Primarily, the White House/CDC plan requires that a state have a 14-day period of declining case numbers before entering Phase One. Arizona has never had a downward trajectory in case numbers over a 2-week period.

It's worth noting that while most States held their stay-at-home orders until June 1st, Arizona released their order on 15-May after Trump's "Live and Let Die" visit to Arizona.

Arizona's release on 15-May completely opened gyms, movie theaters.

At the time Gov Ducey claimed that they were compliant with the White House guidelines and that there were plenty of hospital beds available.

Two weeks later, cases and hospitalizations surged.

For reference, the 1,000,000 case date was 28-Apr-2020. That's 1,000,000 new cases in 44 days - over 22,000 new cases each day.

Oh Texas. This isn't going to go well.

They went over 2,000 in hospital for the first time yesterday in Texas. Some of the larger urban hospitals are reporting that their COVID-19 hospitalizations shot up 40% in the past two weeks.

There was also a county in Texas whose cases went from 647 cases to 1,184 cases (+537) in one day. That county has several prisons and apparently they have an outbreak.

North Carolina, Alabama, Arizona and New Mexico are also reporting strain on their ICU bed capacity because of outbreaks following the Memorial Day holiday... and the protest cases are just starting to show up in the EDs and testing sites.

South and Central America:

Brazil's incompetent leadership has denied the epidemic that has swept through the country, resulting in 802,828 reported cases and at least 40,919 deaths in Brazil. Given the state of Brazil's disorganized government and the state of their overwhelmed healthcare system, the actual numbers may be much higher.

What isn't being discussed in the media is that the United States and Brazil have also seeded surrounding countries in South and Central America. The populace in these countries are unable to shelter in place or stay at home since many of them do not have refrigerators and must buy perishable items in the street markets. Also, many of them are dependent upon public transportation.

These countries account for 1,469,500 cases- with 52,244 new cases added yesterday. They also have 72,946 dead with 2,408 deaths yesterday:

There are a lot of people out in the media being presented as "experts". A few of them are. Dr. Michael Osterholm is an expert and he speaks frankly and clearly about viruses and epidemics. He's also lucky to be in a position where the White House can't muzzle him. It's a good interview.

Linked in that Bluezones article is a link to a Kaiser Health News article that mentions that at least 600 healthcare workers have died of COVID-19 in the US.

This has been a difficult number to get to because most States are not collecting the occupation when a person died.

Requiring the wearing of masks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in areas at the epicenter of the global pandemic may have prevented tens of thousands of infections, a new study suggests.

Mask-wearing is even more important for preventing the virus’ spread and the sometimes deadly COVID-19 illness it causes than social distancing and stay-at-home orders, researchers said, in the study published in PNAS: The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.

Infection trends shifted dramatically when mask-wearing rules were implemented on April 6 in northern Italy and April 17 in New York City - at the time among the hardest hit areas of the world by the health crisis - the study found.

“This protective measure alone significantly reduced the number of infections, that is, by over 78,000 in Italy from April 6 to May 9 and over 66,000 in New York City from April 17 to May 9,” researchers calculated.

When mask-wearing went into effect in New York, the daily new infection rate fell by about 3% per day, researchers said. In the rest of the country, daily new infections continued to increase.

Direct contact precautions - social distancing, quarantine and isolation, and hand sanitizing - were all in place before mask-wearing rules went into effect in Italy and New York City. But they only help minimize virus transmission by direct contact, while face covering helps prevent airborne transmission, the researchers say.

Wow - just signed up for a test and it was very easy - got one for this coming Monday which is always nice not to have to wait. - only a couple miles away and I could walk there if I felt like it.

I noticed something though. As you pointed out the differences in the states' testing it is true that here are only a few states that have this system available as far as I can tell. On the drop down menu where it asks for your state name - California was 1st and they are in alphabetical order - Illinois was 2nd. I didn't see who else was on the list but I did notice it wasn't very long.

I think it should be available to all 50 states and the territories NOW!

Both me and my husband got our results online - both negative.

I am guessing as the testing becomes more widely available they can get a more accurate picture and percentages and if everyone did it we will all get a more accurate and clearer picture in spite of dumps lie machine

As I was discussing yesterday with a Republican associate who I do like - it isn't the number of new cases due to the increased testing which has been politicized by the right- pay attention to the new hospitalizations and deaths because THAT will give you a better picture in case fox news has given you a brain fart. Nice thing is - I could see the light bulb go on which is a nice development as every change is one step at a time and one person at a time.

Life returning to some sort of normal. Travel restrictions eased (not lifted). All retail outlets with direct on-street entrances re-opened. Fast food outlets allowed serve take-out, drive thru only. You can actually see a 'brightness' in peoples' eyes which hasn't been seen for months. Public debate still rages surrounding the effectiveness of face masks. It's left to people to decide whether to wear them in public or not, which seems out of kilter with other recovering countries.
