^^ Four beaches, the ones closer to the older part of downtown, were closed, after the "scientific cameras" installed on the Mapfre Tower bursted out of shame.

The Government and Health Authorities here in New Zealand are telling it's citizens that we have eliminated the virus, for now anyway. We have had no new cases for about 3 weeks and have no active cases. They are still doing thousands of tests per day, and they are all coming back negative. Last week they lifted all social distancing restrictions and over the weekend a total of 60000 people attended 2 rugby games. Our borders remain closed until further notice. I think we achieved this through clear instructions during an extremely strict lockdown plus the aid of fortunate geography. The govt and opposition party and generally the whole population were all on the same page throughout. The option of herd immunity was rarely discussed. Our country's strategy depends on a vaccine becoming available, otherwise we will be in deep doodoo.

Just about every day, the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern and her chief Health Official Dr Ashley Bloomfield held a press conference at precisely 1pm. Dr Bloomfield started by presenting the case statistics etc plus health guidelines. Ardern then gave instruction on the plans and how we would implement it. She always talked of elimination. She introduced us to bubbles and the concept of a team of 5 million. It was really quite amazing to be a part of and to actually achieve the goal, which seemed so unrealistic.

...Public debate still rages surrounding the effectiveness of face masks. It's left to people to decide whether to wear them in public or not, which seems out of kilter with other recovering countries.
The only way around face masks is to never get within 6' of other people.

The issue is that on in the inside of a place like stores and restaurants, it's difficult to do this. That's when the mask is needed the most- when you can't physically distance in an indoor space.

The failure of the masks is that it only offers about a 50% protection from other people and that 50% decreases the longer you're in contact with the other person. However, if you are both wearing masks, the risk is reduced exponentially. Or to put it another way, all it takes is one bad unmasked apple with coronavirus to infect the whole mask-wearing bunch.

Rebekah Jones was fired last month from her job at the Florida Department of Health, where she helped create a data portal about the state's COVID-19 cases. Now, she has created a dashboard of her own.

In some ways, Jones' new portal for Florida coronavirus data looks a lot like the state health department's. But it has a few key differences that reflect just how contentious coronavirus data has become amid politicized arguments about whether it's safe for states to reopen.

Yay Rebekah!

She may help save lives...or at least know that she did her best to keep information available to the residents of the state.

stupid question,
as corona can live up to 9 days on metal surface,
can it be carried through to weather system across countries and across continents ?

FDA terminates emergency use authorization of hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19 [CNN]
The US Food and Drug Administration has revoked its emergency use authorization for the drugs hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine for the treatment of Covid-19.

After reviewing the current research available on the drugs, the FDA determined that the drugs do not meet "the statutory criteria" for emergency use authorization as they are unlikely to be effective in treating Covid-19 based on the latest scientific evidence, the agency noted on its website on Monday.

"FDA has concluded that, based on this new information and other information discussed in the attached memorandum, it is no longer reasonable to believe that oral formulations of HCQ and CQ may be effective in treating COVID-19, nor is it reasonable to believe that the known and potential benefits of these products outweigh their known and potential risks," FDA chief scientist Denise Hinton wrote in a letter to Gary Disbrow of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) on Monday.

Gee. What will TrumpCo. do with all the hydroxychloroquine they stockpiled?

^ Send it the same way everything that was blocking the way, or simply was of no use anymore..: send it down the sewer, or simply ignore it, and forget about it.

I have a suggestion. It involves his next colonoscopy appointment.

If this happens in NZ, what can you expect from the rest of the world:

Coronavirus update: New Zealand records two new cases of coronavirus, tourists on the move as European nations open borders

^ And Spain has been the most reticent European country, along with Norway I think, to open up international boders: the original intention was to start on July, 1, now it has been advanced to next Sunday.

So far they are trying a "probe" with some German tourists in Majorca.
