/\ @11.2% of the US population has been tested

Is that actually people who have been tested at least once? Does this figure/percentage take into account that many people have been tested more than once? = Based on number of tests administered and not actually the number of individuals tested.

They're supposed to be eliminating people who have been tested more than once.

More on the clotting seen in COVID patients.

Autopsies are showing clots throughout the body in various organs, not just lungs and heart.

Some Covid-19 patients are known to develop blood clotting issues, but the degree and the extent to which that occurs was described as "dramatic" by Rapkiewicz.
In the early stages of the pandemic, bedside clinicians noticed a lot of blood clotting "in lines and various large vessels," she said.
"What we saw at autopsy was sort of an extension of that," she said. "The clotting was not only in the large vessels but also in the smaller vessels.

For those of us who are hyper-coagulable....this is one of the real terrors of contracting COVID...will the anti-coagulants we are taking continue to be effective and at the levels being administered balanced against the risk of bleed-outs.

Kazakhstan denies Chinese government report that country has 'unknown pneumonia' outbreak more deadly than Covid-19 [CNN]
Authorities in Kazakhstan have denied a report published by Chinese officials that the country is experiencing an outbreak of "unknown pneumonia" potentially deadlier than the novel coronavirus.

On Thursday, the Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan issued a warning to citizens living in the Central Asian country that the pneumonia had killed more than 1,700 people.

"Kazakhstani Health Department and other agencies are conducting comparative research and have not defined the nature of the pneumonia virus," the statement said.

New cases of the unidentified pneumonia have been increasing significantly since mid-June across the country, said the embassy, adding that in some places, authorities are reporting hundreds of new cases a day.

In a statement on Friday, the Kazakhstan health ministry acknowledged the presence of "viral pneumonias of unspecified etiology," but denied that the outbreak was new or unknown.

Something that has stuck in my head is how many times that I've heard healthcare workers on the front line say, "This is the worst thing that I've seen in all my years in healthcare" and "This is not the flu.".

A recurring theme in this thread is how unpredictable new viruses are. Over the past 5 months, this thread has documented how a "respiratory virus" has had unanticipated effects on clotting, the vascular system and other body functions.

One thing about clotting disorders and vascular disorders: both disorders target the brain.

Many people who have severe COVID-19 complain of headaches, loss of smell/taste and "brain fog". Not much attention has been paid to these symptoms but there's some research coming from the UK that is connecting these symptoms to specific effects that coronavirus has on the brain.

Some scientists suspect that Covid-19 causes respiratory failure and death not through damage to the lungs, but the brain – and other symptoms include headaches, strokes and seizures. [CNN]
Helms and her colleagues published a small study in the New England Journal of Medicine documenting the neurological symptoms in their Covid-19 patients, ranging from cognitive difficulties to confusion. All are signs of “encephalopathy” (the general term for damage to the brain) – a trend that researchers in Wuhan had noticed in coronavirus patients there in February.

Now, more than 300 studies from around the world have found a prevalence of neurological abnormalities in Covid-19 patients, including mild symptoms like headaches, loss of smell (anosmia) and tingling sensations (arcoparasthesia), up to more severe outcomes such as aphasia (inability to speak), strokes and seizures. This is in addition to recent findings that the virus, which has been largely considered to be a respiratory disease, can also wreak havoc on the kidneys, liver, heart, and just about every organ system in the body...

“We don’t know yet if the encephalopathy is more severe with Covid-19 than with other viruses, but I can tell you we’ve been seeing quite a lot of it,” says neurologist Elissa Fory of the Henry Ford Foundation in Detroit, Michigan. “As the number of cases increases, you will start to see not only the common manifestations but also the uncommon manifestations – and we’re seeing them all at once, which is not something any of us have encountered in our lifetimes.”

Estimates of exact prevalence vary, but it seems that roughly 50% of patients diagnosed with Sars-CoV-2 – the virus responsible for causing the illness Covid-19 – have experienced neurological problems

And this is my terror.

That so little is really understood about all of it.

In 1994, I spent 26 days in Toronto General under the care of the Chief of Internal Medicine and the Head of Haematology for the Toronto Health Network....and we had some great conversations about all the unknowns at the time regarding coagulopathy, genetics and the impact of clotting on more than just the lungs, the major vessels and even the brain.

I would love to be able to talk to them about this all these years later.

/\ June weddings.

There was an article that I read this week that attributed the rising cases in Israel to June weddings.

And this is my terror.

That so little is really understood about all of it...

When I learned about epidemics in grad school, we studied Marburg, Lassa Fever and Bubonic Plague- all of which cause massive coagulation and bleeding in victims. Content about disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is core curriculum for critical care. People working in teaching hospitals in the US see a few cases of DIC in a year- usually following trauma or massive sepsis. No one in the US ever expects to see novel viruses, much less DIC from a novel virus.

Healthcare workers in the US now have entire ICUs full of COVID-19 patients who have these bizarre complications of coronavirus.

And there's no end in sight.

The case counts are still going up. We're now back over 1,000 deaths per day again- like we were during the NYC epidemic back in April.

Worldometer is showing more than 70,000 cases for yesterday in the US.

The impact?

As the writer of the article points out, Trump has actually succeeded in building a wall around the US and is making the rest of the world pay for it.

Americans now only have 24 countries they can travel to freely. And 4 more if they quarantine.

Two countries have officially gone with the "herd immunity" idea: UK and Sweden.

The UK went from 459 cases in mid March to 250,000 cases 60 days later in Mid-May. 35,000 people died by Mid May. The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, ended up in the ICU with COVID-19. They gave up on the herd immunity idea and locked down.

That gives a misleading impression of what happened here. You imply that the UK government gave up on an official herd immunity policy and locked down as a result of 35,000 deaths and the Prime Minister's hospitalisation. In fact, the lock down began in mid-March when deaths were still well below 1,000 and the PM was healthy. Although the term herd immunity was being mentioned by politicians and the media back in the spring, I'm not aware that the government had ever "officially gone" with the idea as you suggest.

Not gonna post the channel or videos, but it is started to make the rounds and I imagine going to blow up soon. But there were a group of people who were live streaming their visit to Disney World and one of them talked about being really sick to the point of violently vomiting. They refused to go to the Hospital even though apparently advised to, they mention all of this on their stream and just refuse to leave the park claiming it was an allergic reaction. When in reality you don't know that because you haven't gotten officially checked out and even if it ends up being that, it's better to be safe than sorry in general let alone a fucking pandemic. I can't stand people.

Florida has more cases in one day than South Korea had in its entire 6 month epidemic.

The latest entry in Gov DeSantis' race to the bottom:

Florida shatters US record of single-day Covid-19 cases [CNN]
The Florida Department of Health reported 15,299 new Covid-19 cases Sunday, the highest number of new cases reported in a single day by any state since the coronavirus pandemic began.

The previous record -- also set by Florida -- came on July 4, with 11,434 new cases reported, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The test positivity rate in Florida is 19.60%, according to JHU statistics.

For reference, the expected positivity rate should be between 4-5%. In the worst of an epidemic, the goal is to keep the positivity rate below 10%.

Our Governor is in denial like Trump. The way they are handling this virus is their downfall. Main problem tho is the deaths that will also happen.

I am honestly surprised at this point that DeSantis isn’t actually be drug through the streets. People are absolutely pissed off at him.

Kids can absolutely not go back to school. Was talking about it with my SO’s sister today and there is absolutely no way you can properly do social distancing and masks with all these kids in these schools.

/\ /\ It's not as though drug cartels and other forms of organized crime who need those nightclubs hopping can just walk in and apply for unemployment or small business bailouts.

With the exception of Florida and a few other States, the COVID-19 numbers in the US are starting to decline slightly now that people are starting to wear masks and physically distance.

Now, we're starting to see the 4th of July cases...

Hundreds of people celebrated the July 4 weekend at a Michigan lake. Now some have Covid-19 [CNN]
After revelers celebrated the Fourth of July at a Michigan lake, some started testing positive for Covid-19 -- prompting health officials to warn other party-goers that they might have be infected, too.

The Health Department of Northwest Michigan said other health officials in the state reported that several people have tested positive "after attending the festivities at the Torch Lake sandbar over the Fourth of July holiday," the department said Friday.
