On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

They may dodge the bullet if they're giving Pfizer and Moderna to their highest risk population (i.e. the elderly and infirm).

The studies of Pfizer and Moderna against the original SARS-CoV-2 showed that risk of infection dropped by 50% within the first 10 days after the first shot. By day 21 (when the boost dose is given), efficacy was nearly 90%. The Delta (India) variant studies are incomplete but the estimates are about 80% efficacy for people who are fully vaccinated (compared to 95% efficacy on the original Alpha virus).

The bad news? The dominant variant in the US is the B.1.1.7 (UK) variant. The Delta variant is doubling every two weeks, so they're estimating that the US numbers for next week will probably be somewhere near 10%. In the UK, Delta is already 91% of cases.

Delta seems to double the risk of hospitalization, so all those anti-vaxxers running around are ensuring that the Delta variant is going to become dominant variant which means more people getting sick (because of the lower vaccine efficacy) and it means that the hospitals aren't going to get a break this summer. It also means that we may end up getting a booster to increase coverage for variants in the Fall/Winter.

Sounds like the US might need to stock up Oxygen to avoid families begging for oxygen ....

Just in case anyone is interested...

Cases in Québec peaked the weak of 17-April. They reported 10,760 cases that week. Since then, they have been reporting about 2,000 cases per week. Well, see what happens now that it is getting warm again and the boys in le Village gai are back.

Sadly, it seems that the USA has passed 600,000 Covid-19 deaths:

What particularly caught my eye in the BBC piece was the incentives some states are offering in an attempt to boost vaccine take up:

"Ohio has been selecting one vaccinated resident each week to win $1m (£708,000). On Tuesday, California will give $1.5m each to 10 residents. Other winnable items include alcohol, cannabis, guns, food vouchers and gift cards."

Guns? Only in America!

[COLOR=var(--primary-text)]Covid doom predictions that never happened

1) Suicides fell
2) Savings and net worth rose even as consumption bounced back
3) People are paying their rents and mortgages. The percentage of people who made rent payments on time fell only slightly.
4) State budgets are healthy
5) Business formation increased

But universities really are in trouble

People hospitalized with COVID-19 now have one overwhelming thing in common. They're not vaccinated.

Herd stupidty has its price.

That's what I'm hearing from colleagues in the hospitals. It's overwhelming young people who didn't get vaccinated showing up in the emergency.

NY Times a great interactive map that you select by country or state to compare vaccinations to cases. For example, here's Alabama (you can use the dropdown at the top of the page to change the location):

Tracking Coronavirus in Alabama: Latest Map and Case Count

I learned today that Oregon is in a small group of "WTF?" states, as illustrated here:

That is truly weird. It's not an I-5 thing; California is straight below Oregon and Washington on the chart, below the national average. It's not a Pacific Northwest thing; Idaho is over to the left in the "Fewer Vaccinations, More Cases" quadrant.

Well, the big news in Spain today is that, starting on June, 26, outdoors anti-covid masking will not be mandatory anymore.
The other piece of big news is that the Delta variant is expected to be dominant in two to four weeks.

Considering a vacation in the US? Here's the percentage of people over age 12 who are fully vaccinated. Hint: avoid the southeastern US.

And I can't see it without a subscription. Not gonna do that to see ONE article.

What made Oregon a WTF state...?

The B.1.1.7 (UK) variant and low immunzation rates in minority groups.

Persons of Hispanic ethnicity have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19: they account for 13% of Oregon’s population but 31% of cases of known ethnicity reported to date. This proportion has fallen in recent months, however: before March 2021, 34% of reported cases of known ethnicity were Hispanic; since then, 19% have been Hispanic.

Here's the scatter plot from the WaPo article with the States:

That little cluster of circles in the upper right quadrant are Colorado, Oregon, and Washington -- all nicely above average in vaccination rates but at the same time well above average in new cases.

You need a subscription? Odd... I don't have one and I get to the article no problem.

And... it isn't showing.

I can't get it to show up except without the labels on all the circles -- never seen this issue before.

NYT and WaPo's graphics are HTML 5, so the data being pulled from a database and layered on top of the grid. The only way to display it like I did is to image capture the page.
