On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

A story that didn't make the national news - CoVID-19 is still happening and the unvaccinated are still at risk.

Manatee County is on the Gulf Coast of Florida near Tampa.

COVID-19 outbreak forces closure of Manatee government headquarters. 2 people have died [Bradenton Herald]
A COVID-19 outbreak that killed two IT staffers in Manatee County government and hospitalized three others has forced the shutdown of the county’s administrative building in downtown Bradenton...

On Monday, one of four IT staffers who had been hospitalized with COVID-19 died, according to Hopes. A fifth IT staffer who went to the doctor on Wednesday, died at home Thursday from COVID-19.

One staffer in the department who worked closely with the other five and didn’t contract the coronavirus was vaccinated. All five who contracted the virus were known not to be vaccinated and had a sore throat as their initial primary complaint.

A few comments:
  • The US remains #1 in total number of cases - 33,540,362 have people tested positive in the US but India is closing fast at 29,881,772 cases.
  • The big news is Brazil. Brazil has it's own variant - P.1. Brazilians who had the alpha variant in 2020 do not have complete immunity to P.1, so many Brazilians are getting COVID-19 for the second time. Last week, 508,932 Brazilians tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.
  • If you add the daily deaths in Brazil, India, Argentina and Columbia together- 2,075 in Brazil, 2,332 in India, 592 in Columbia and 524 in Argentina - 5,523 people are dying every day in those 4 countries. That's 76% of the worlds daily deaths in just those countries

As predicted...

Delta variant infecting mounting number of people in rural Kansas and Missouri [ABC]
The delta coronavirus variant is infecting a mounting number of people in rural Kansas and Missouri.

The variant, first detected in India in October, was upgraded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week from a "variant of interest" to a "variant of concern." The CDC estimates the delta variant accounts for about 10% of new cases in the U.S.

Missouri had the highest percentage of the delta variant at 6.8% of reported cases as of May 22, the latest CDC data.

Data from the CDC shows high community transmission in rural parts of Missouri and Kansas -- regions already struggling with slow vaccination rates.

And it will get worse...

Missouri tracking rise of delta variant through wastewater system [NBC]
...Researchers first detected the delta variant on May 10, in wastewater from Branson. That same week, they found it in wastewater collected some 235 miles away, in Brookfield....

Neblock said the county’s current wave of Covid-19 cases has led to a hospitalization rate of about 14 percent, and those being hospitalized are younger, 20 to 60 years old, and largely unvaccinated.

In Missouri, only 37% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

I"m definitely paying attention -- and hoping that the quarentines work. I don't think that the actual illness is too horrible -- but, hope that there is no worldwide epidemic.

Hi guys!!!

:):):)

The Quarantines and masks have worked in Valencia Spain where I live it is a city of 1.1 million in a counrty with 47 millions men women and children and now has the lowest amount of cases in Europe. We have all been vaccinated!

I hope the rest of the USA is wearing there masks and following the rules her in Spain we have we now have the least cases in number and almost none in my city of 1.1 million people

^ You mean urban area of 1.1 million people, and metro of 1.7

Yes, Valencia is the third biggest metro area in Spain and, although with barely the same population size as Barcelona city proper, it is still quite remarkable that, except for one brief period last winter, that desenly populated area, and with some of the very first major covid outbreaks in Spain (those soccer supporters back in February 2020) has not been as seriously striken as one might have expected, so that it is no big deal that some of their field hospitals had been anecdotically affected by the winter gales. Even the Spanish isles in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic could not manage to have lower rates of infection at some point during the pandemic.

Well, that is higher than the rate of, according to Pierre, wonderful Spain...

(Scroll down, almost to the bottom...)

Wear masks. Beware of the delta variant!

It is worth noting that Missouri is a State (like many others in the US) where the urban areas, like St Louis, lean Democratic but the rural areas lean Republican.

Predictably, you can guess where the low rates of vaccination are (hint: St Louis vaccination rate is 48% full vaccinated / 42% with both doses):

https://data.news-leader.com/covid-19-vaccine-tracker/missouri/29/

^ In BCN the cases have started to grow again, almost exclusively in BCN city, although it is feared it will drag the Southern metro area, and always among younger people with no vaccination at all, or with just one jab. No major crisis is expected, but this is no wild news either.

BTW, starting this Saturday, masks will not be mandatory outdoors anymore... following a tendency one can spot on the streets for the past few weeks, and not just among tourists...

And tomorrow night is the wildest party night of the year...

This is a very interesting diagram:

I can see the wave around the last week of November- which was particularly bad in the age 15-24 group and the > 85 age group. This appears to have been followed by a lockdown in December? Then there was a second wave after Christmas/New Year which may have been followed by another lockdown.

You can also see the effects of the vaccine campaigns in the over 65 year old age groups starting in March. You can also see that vaccine compliance has been weak in the under 30 year old age groups into June. You can also predict that has the delta variant becomes established in the Barcelona area, the under 30 year old age group will be hit the hardest.

Remember logic has not been followed anywhere during the covid crisis, do not expect the Spaniards to have been more reasonable: the crisis and lockdown started in mid-October in Barcelona. By early December, around the time of the Constitution-Immaculate long weekend, you can see the cases were quite low, and then they were all for "saving Christmas", so they decided to fuel the next big crisis after the holidays, the official "third wave".
There has been no compliance because there has been NO OPTION (NO VACCINES) FOR THE UNDER 30  heck, they have just started with the 35-39 these past couple of days, and highschoolers will be vaccinated in August, knowing the Spaniards, probably early September, just before the classes start.
They are being hit the hardest already.

Whenever one comments, always remember one is always wearing colored eyeglasses.

Apparently the rules about masks in Oregon are being loosened, despite the fact that the state isn't even remotely close to the 70% (both shots) vaccination level stated as the goal for relaxing protective measures.

This is one of those situations where democracy is stupid: elected officials with no expertise in medicine are making medical decisions for millions of people and rarely do this decisions have anything to do with the science.

If you know anyone who has refused to get vaccinated or believe that vaccines are dangerous, time is working against them. Over 200 people a day die of COVID-19 in the US. Only about 5 of them were fully vaccinated. The other 195+ who die daily weren't vaccinated.

Nearly all COVID deaths in US are now among unvaccinated [AP]
Nearly all COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. now are in people who weren’t vaccinated, a staggering demonstration of how effective the shots have been and an indication that deaths per day — now down to under 300 — could be practically zero if everyone eligible got the vaccine.

An Associated Press analysis of available government data from May shows that “breakthrough” infections in fully vaccinated people accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations. That’s about 0.1%.

And only about 150 of the more than 18,000 COVID-19 deaths in May were in fully vaccinated people. That translates to about 0.8%, or five deaths per day on average.
