There have been several outbreaks across Spain, following school's-out celebrations of highschoolers in Majorca the past couple of weeks, with dozens of cases in BCN, and hundreds in all the country.

Meanwhile, in the adjacent boring Jersey-town

Not surprised. Australia seems to be lagging behind on its vaccination program.

More than 10 million Australians go under lockdown in fight against Delta variant [CNN]
Four of Australia's eight capital cities are now under Covid-19 lockdown, as authorities struggle to contain fresh outbreaks of the highly infectious Delta variant...

Australia was celebrated for its initial response to the pandemic and for getting its economy more or less back on track long ago.

But with that security has come complacency, particularly in the federal government, which failed to secure enough vaccine doses to prevent the regular "circuit breaker" lockdowns that come every time a handful of cases emerge, or even the longer restrictions the capital cities are experiencing now.

And a bit of irony...
Australia deputy leader fined for not wearing a mask as delta coronavirus outbreak puts millions in lockdown [WaPo]
Swaths of Australia were headed into lockdown on Tuesday as the delta variant of the coronavirus spread around the continent and health officials repeated pleas for the largely unvaccinated populace to adhere to new rules on indoor mask-wearing and social distancing.

But the deputy prime minister was already among the first to slip up.

On Monday, Barnaby Joyce stopped for gas in Armidale, about 300 miles north of Sydney, and entered the store to pay — without donning a mask. A concerned citizen reported him to a crime hotline, which led to police fining Joyce 200 Australian dollars (about $150)...

Joyce, a charismatic rural lawmaker, gained international notoriety in 2015 when — as agriculture minister — he pursued Johnny Depp for breaching biosecurity rules after the actor smuggled his two Yorkshire terriers, Pistol and Boo, into Australia.

I think they mean don’t take it at your own risk

I don't want it. Mild side effects are fine.

Because of the new variants, there's beginning to be rumblings about recommendations for masks for children under 12 until the vaccines are approved for this age group. There are studies currently in progress but it may be well into this Fall before children under 12 are approved for COVID-19 vaccines.

This might be why mask recommendations for children might be under reconsideration...

Covid-19 is killing Brazilian children at alarming rates. Many may be going undiagnosed [CNN]
The Brazilian Health Ministry says 1,122 children under the age of 10 have died from Covid-19 since the pandemic started. The Brazilian government records the number people who died from severe acute respiratory diseases -- such as severe cases of the flu, and others.
However, researchers from global health organization Vital Strategies, which works in more than 70 countries around the world, say its studies suggest such case numbers have been severely underreported.

When comparing the number of Brazilian child deaths from such illnesses in 2018 and 2019 with the number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic, Vital Strategies found an excess 2,975 deaths. The organization says it's likely that the vast majority of these excess deaths -- not just the official number of 1,122 -- were because of Covid-19.

"What we see in Brazil is that the number of kids dying with Covid specified as the cause of death is higher than what we are seeing in other countries of the world -- it's 10 times higher," Dr. Ana Luiza Bierrenbach, an epidemiologist at Vital Strategies, told CNN.

A few things to notice about this week's stats:
  • The case growth in India has slowed. The cases peaked the week ending 22-May-2021 at 1,916,383 new cases that week. This week, they were down to 441,783 due to lockdowns and a decrease in large public gatherings. Unfortunately, during that time ( weeks) they only went from 42 million fully vaccinated people to 62 million fully vaccinated people- well below the 500 million that would be needed to approach herd immunity.
  • India is still on track to overtake the US in total number of cases - the US has reported 33.7 million cases, India has reported 30.5 million cases.
  • Cases have slowed slightly in Brazil, although 1,500 people are dying per day of COVID-19. Unfortunately, the virus and the gamma (P.1) variant has become well established and has spread to Argentina and Columbia. Columbia reported nearly 198,000 new cases last week with 4,300 deaths.
  • The UK and Ireland are still seeing an increase in cases. The delta variant has become well-established there and the population's vaccination rates have not been high enough to slow case growth in the under 65 age groups

States/Territories in the US with highest number of cases last week:
  1. Florida: 13,366
  2. Texas: 10,176
  3. Missouri: 7,054
  4. California: 5,767
  5. Arizona: 3,807

States/Territories with highest percentage increase in the US last week:
  1. US Virgin Islands: +60 (1.6%)
  2. Missouri: +7,054 (1.1%)
  3. Arkansas: +3,325 (1.0%)
  4. Nevada: +3,149 (0.9%)
  5. Hawaii: +337 (0.9%)

Just over 40% with complete vaccination, moi included: Missouri rate, in a town in which virtually everybody wants to get vaccinated.
