Scientists believe they have the clue to what caused the extremely rare blood clots from the AstraZeneca vaccine.

by the way, 73 deaths out of 50 million doses is incredibly small...but the research may be helpful in making all vaccines safer in the future.

And because it needs emphasis (from the article):
The vaccine is thought to have saved about a million lives from Covid.

My first 2 shots were Astra Zeneca...since I am on Xarelto and have an IVC filter, I guess they thought it was as safe as it could be. My booster yesterday was Pfizer, so I am good to go until the next one.

I would note that today, there were a couple of times when I thought 'where the fuck did I bang my shoulder?' because it was a little achey and sore if I touched it.

But I had zero reaction from AZ and only the mildest reaction to Pfizer....but maybe it is because I hold a block of Pfizer stock? I can tolerate a lot of pain for dividends.

One thing to call out on the graph- it's a measure of overdose deaths. About 75% of the deaths were opioid related.

Honestly, I don't think the problem is an solely an increase in the number of addicts. The problem is that they are not getting the lower-quality heroin that they're used to.

Carfentanil is so potent that it is almost always lethal. If morphine has a potency of "1", heroin would be "2", fentanyl would be "100", carfentanil would would be "10,000".

Many opioid addicts are functional addicts. They have jobs where their addiction isn't as obvious- working in nightclubs, gig workers, day laborers, etc. Unemployment may have removed the need to be functional and the mental health stresses that came with the pandemic exacerbated their addiction. Most sources attribute the increase in deaths to fentanyl and carfentanil.

If you've been dealing with a heroin addict, then you know that it doesn't matter where the money is coming from, as long as it's coming in. They'll stay functional to keep an income to pay for their habit. They'll steal from work, from family or wherever they can. So, being unemployed and getting an unemployment check or a stimulus check is no different from getting a paycheck, working day labor for cash or stealing. Money is money.

I know a guy who recognized there's been a surge in demand... he sold enough heroin last month to make a 20% down payment on a house, and if he keeps it up he will own the house by spring.

He just needs to be very sure he doesn't get caught -- not that the cops are looking very hard these days, after it became pretty obvious that the cops spending the most time dealing with the public are the ones getting the virus; even after they've been vaccinated they're still "public shy".

I took a friend to get his booster today. I asked him to come over to help with some moving of stuff, and when we were headed back I mentioned we were going within two blocks of the clinic -- he didn't even know where the clinic was! He's generally so healthy he never needed to go there, then they re-organized and moved physical therapy and some lab stuff out of the hospital next door so hardly anyone goes there these days. And I told him to drink plenty and take something before the probable fever starts -- found out he only takes aspirin; he had some kind of reaction to ibuprofen and his doctor told him to stop using acetomenaphine.

I got boosted back in October. ..|

That's about when I got my third Pfizer shot, too! :slap:

Third pfizer shot booked for next Thursday morning. Third shots really ramping up here. And got the annual flu jab two weeks ago.

Though wondering if with Omnicron we have to go through it all again in a few months time.

They can continue to treat me like a hunan pin cushion, so long as that's the professional public health advice.

I love that when you google Chinas deaths from it there mysteriously are only like 4600 makes you wonder! I hate these fuckin antivaxxers and anti maskers and anti distancers like what the fuck just because you haven't got it doesn't mean you won't! And just because you have gotten the shot you can still get it just a milder case of it that will most likely not end you in the hospital! I tell you last year we all had it at my house for Thanksgiving and I was shitting bricks!!! Mom's a diabetic dad has bp and cholesterol issues and Im asthmatic plus a relative has their own shit goin on! So yeah was scared to death me or my mom was going to end up in hospital! These fucking people make me sick with their kids it impinges on their rights we don't want it my kid my choice, yet the flip of that is this week's abortion hearings these same people MK,MC; ARE MOST LIKELY THE SAME ONES WHO ARE FOR ABORTION! My god how come there wasn't this problem with Jonas Salk and his polio vaccine? These goddamned "woke" fucktards! end of rant!

We're starting to get results from early studies of Omicron. It's coming down to three questions:
  1. Is it more contagious than Delta?
  2. Is it able to infect people who have had COVID-19 or who have received the third dose booster?
  3. Does it make people sicker than earlier strains and does it increase hospitalizations or deaths?

The evidence on #1 is yes, it is more contagious than Delta. South Africa is estimating that Omicron is being transmitted about two times as quickly as Delta. In a matter of few weeks, South Africa has gone from predominantly Delta to now 75% Omicron/25% Delta.

We have evidence on #2 that people who previous had the Wuhan strain or Delta can be re-infected by Omicron. That conclusion is based upon reporting to South Africa where people who previously had a COVID-19 infection are being re-infected with Omicron.

I haven't seen measures of Omicron's viral load but they're already estimating that the R[sub]0[/sub] is going to be between 3 and 5. That makes it likely that the predominant strain circulating among the unvaccinated population world-wide will change from Delta to Omicron.

We don't have enough evidence about how effective the vaccines will be - either in from lab testing or from population studies. So far, we have had cases in the U.S. in people who were fully vaccinated (current meaning: two shots of Pfizer/Moderna or one shot of J&J). The California Omicron case was someone who traveled from South Africa to the US and she had two doses of Moderna but not the booster. Her symptoms are mild and none of her immediate contacts have tested positive.

South Africa is reporting that their patients in hospital with Omicron are younger but they have mild symptoms.

Unless there's clear evidence that the current mRNA vaccines don't stop Omicron and unless there's evidence that Omicron results in more severe cases (more hospitalization, more deaths), it's unlikely there will be a special booster for Omicron.

We're really at a cross-roads at the moment. Because we have so many unvaccinated people in the world (and specifically in the US where there have been 70K-100K new cases every day), the rate at which variants are created is going to be high. We're better off getting the unvaccinated people to get the shots than we are trying to chase the new variants that unvaccinated people are creating.

You couldn't make it up!

An Italian man who wanted a Covid vaccination certificate without getting the jab turned up for his vaccine with a fake arm

- - - Updated - - -

I almost told someone at the building supply store today "thank you for doing your part to help achieve new variants of the virus" for not wearing a mask.

I told someone the other day to move away 6 feet if they weren't going to put a mask on

^As looney as this sounds, it is the latest "snake oil" being marketed on the internet COVID conspiracy sites as a "BOO". It's dirt from a peat bog in Canada that is adjacent to an industrial site. The homeopathic, COVID-denier crowd has also embraced BOO.

We're at a place where there's a small group of anti-science anti-vaxxers who will pay $100 for a bag of contaminated dirt instead of getting a free vaccine that has been administered over 450 million times in the US (8 BILLION times world-wide).

'Magic dirt': How the internet fueled, and defeated, the pandemic's weirdest MLM [NBC]

I am to the point of thinking, if they're this stupid, I hope they eat this dirt like it's chocolate, and they suffer the consequences, whatever they may be.

What's a "BOO"?

Meanwhile, my county has slipped down to just 69.9% who've gotten at least one shot; it was at 72% before the minimum age was lowered. 61.1% have gotten their second shot. I haven't seen any figures for booster shots. And just this week the county got in pediatric shots, and the latest figures are now using percentage of total population rather than percentage of those eligible.

It bugs the heck out of me that the clinic has three people in a suite set up just to do vaccinations and since about Halloween they've spent most of their time waiting for people to show up!
