On Topic Discussion 2019 Coronavirus (COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

There will be more. I don't think I've ever seen anything this contagious. Pretty much everyone who was near a group of people in the past week seems to be testing positive.

One of the first people diagnosed with omicron in the US attributes his infection to a trip to a karaoke bar. There were about 30 people in his group. Fifteen of them tested positive.

Silver lining: omicron is kicking delta's ass. Some areas are reporting that 90% of their new cases are now omicron.

I can't find data on what variants all the new cases here are -- not that it really matters, I suppose, unless omicron overwhelming delta is an improvement!

Meanwhile the number of ICU beds available within 100 miles is down to 25....

Looking at those numbers reveals that American respect for elders has diminished -- or people would be following their example and getting vaccinated!

No, it's what we have known for decades: elders are not what elders used to be anymore. Forever young and all that.

That, and, of course, that people do not respect themselves.

Well it's time for me to catch the 'rona I guess. One in sixty people are infected here in New York City, they say. Just about everyone I know has it. Just got a text from a client who has it. I'll bet there will be more.

Time for a self-imposed lockdown. :D
So far, so good. I saw a few people during the past few days. Last group was a Scrabble group on Sunday, and with the omicron incubation period SO FAST, I'm hoping that a mere two and a half days later means that I've ducked anything from a group. Since then I've seen only two other people.

I did some cuddling groups, and more recently some gay groups with nudity (still emphasizing platonic touch), but those are OUT THE WINDOW now until further notice, all of them.

Re: Coronavirus. Are you buying the hype?

Last night the 28th of December in Valencia Spain I had 300 other people took our 3rd and final covid 19 vax! Hopefully this will put an end to someof the old infor here. All stay safe wear a mask follow rules thanks guys!

There's some truth to that statement but it's not uniform. Part of the responsibility is with that elder group themselves. Older people who were in long-term congregate settings like nursing homes were vaccinated by government mandate. The death rate in this group dropped significantly.

There was a group of people over age 65 who were not in congregate settings who didn't get vaccinated. Their mortality rate did not decrease.

Here's a graph that represents > age 65 vaccination rates by State compared to deaths in citizens > age 65:

attachment.php

Arkansas was a state with a high mortality in the over age 65 group - nearly 200 people per 100,000 citizens over age 65 was also the state with one of the lowest vaccination rate in the over age 65 group at about 73% fully vaccinated.

Wisconsin had vaccinated 91% of its citizens over age 65. Their death rate in that group was about 50 deaths per 100,000 citizens over age 65.

Yes, low vaccination rates in the population at large puts the elderly population at risk but if those older citizens don't take responsibility for their own health and get the vaccines, they are also contributing to the problem.

I was vaccinated with Pfizer now almost exactly six months ago, and next week I would be getting the Moderna/Lonza - Spikevax: is it any good

The Catalan Secretary for Public Health has stated that virtually 100% of covid cases in the region are due to the omicron variant.

US did a lot of Moderna early on. It was the one that had the highest and longest-lasting antibody response because the first two doses are a large dose.

If Spain does the same protocol, the Moderna booster (shot #3) is a half-dose.

I would still plan a day of napping and taking it easy the day after the booster. :)

So, here's some charts from the latest CDC reports and some KFF vaccine surveys....

Chart of US Cases from Jan 2020 through Dec 2021 showing the Alpha surge, Delta surge with the beginning of the Omicron surge:
attachment.php

Here's the Case chart with gold line showing the mortality per 100,000 people:
attachment.php

Things to note about the above charts:
  • The original strain in Mar-Jun 2020 had a high mortality because we really did not have any treatments. For all the bitching and whining about the lockdown, you can see from that gold line in Apr-May 2020, why it was necessary.
  • In spite of the warnings about holiday get-togethers and travel in Nov-Dec 2020, there was a huge spike in both cases and deaths. This was the alpha-variant spike. Unfortunately, alpha variant was well-established before the vaccine rollout started in late Dec 2020.
  • In Jan 2021, the Biden administration started the vaccine rollout to healthcare workers and people over age 65. You can see the effects of the vaccine on both the case rate and the death rate in May-Jul 2020. You can also see in June why the Biden Administration was so optimistic that we could have a free and open July 4th celebration.
  • The Sep 2021 surge is Delta variant. Delta variant was 5-6 times more contagious than the earlier variants, however you can see how the vaccines suppressed both the case and the death curve. Delta was the first surge that resulted in hospitalizations and deaths primarily in the 40% of the American population who were not vaccinated.
  • Projections are that Omicron will be an even bigger surge than Delta but it should result in a flatter death rate in adults.

Here's the chart showing the vaccine rollout:
attachment.php

Here's a chart that shows the current concern: as we get more and more adults vaccinated, the virus is affecting unvaccinated children.
attachment.php

Comments on the pediatric chart:
  • At the end of October, the US approved vaccinations down to age 5. You can see the decline in the age 5-11 group that started afterward. Unfortunately, this leaves the age 0-4 group vulnerable.
  • You can see from the gold line that the under age 4 group is being affected by the Delta and Omicron surges.
  • Many of these children had mild cold-like symptoms or they were asymptomatic. There were reports from hospitals that children were being admitted for other reasons- elective surgeries, RSV infections, traumatic injury- and when the hospital tested them, they found that they also had COVID infections.

Who is likely to not be vaccinated? Answer: white people age 30 to 64 with high school level education who identify as evangelical Republican and live in suburban and rural counties that voted for Trump.

The US government is about to do a mass distribution of at-home rapid tests. This means that most of the new cases will never be reported to the government. In 2022, we will probably stop focusing on case numbers and instead focus almost exclusively on hospitalization and death rates since these statistics are going to be the most reliable indicator of the success of the vaccines.

Here's the chart of Hospitalizations:

I had that very thought today at the grocery store when I saw what looked like a small clan all trooped in with no masks. If I hadn't been having issues with Skylix, my service-dog-in-training, I might have given them a bit of science education -- that by being maskless, they were in effect volunteering to be hosts for another new strain of the virus.

At 16428 cases, yesterday was our highest daily figure since the pandemic began. Real numbers expected to be higher due to testing capacity issues over the Christmas period. However hospitalizations and ICU numbers remain relatively stable.

For the first time, I have had family members test positive. All in the younger (ie under 40) age groups with mild symptoms ranging from headaches to sore throat to joint aches and pains.

I've got joint aches and pains, but it's from shoveling snow off the sidewalk. OCD me had to shovel not just my sidewalk to get to the vehicles, I decided to clear a path all the way to the grocery store. That was yesterday; today with the sun out a bit I shoveled the other direction so people coming from farther down the street could have a clear path, and then I shoveled along the edge of my grass to keep meltwater from running onto the sidewalk and freezing later.

Now I'm sitting here wondering how smart it is to do things that can generate the same symptoms as COVID.....

Laughing at what exactly in the 'story'?

Laughing Icon.
A lot of comments that I summarize as "It's all Biden's fault, this wouldn't be happening if Trump were president", blah, blah, blah.
Lots of "Sheeple" comments and photos, and a ton of vaccine disinformation.
Lots of hate for the "liberal media".

You get the idea. Same old, same old hate, stupidity, rejection of reality, and willful ignorance.
None of the comments actually acknowledge or address the rising death rates, infections, and hospital admissions.

Correction: Not all comments are like that. There are number that are supportive and express concern and sympathy. They get laughed at well though.

A few of the comments:

The panic-pushers at the Post Dispatch just can't help themselves, can they?
Should be raising fear about this vaccine.
Here we go again.
Real Americans now see how the liberal media lies bigly like a rug.
It's just the flu.
Yeah, because the first two shots worked SO well.
Decision time. It's either stand up for your rights or become sheep.
Bow to your masters.

There are probably a ton more, but my Facebook blocked list is up to about 800 now.

In New Zealand, we are so far being successful at keeping Omicron out of the community. We know that its ultimately a futile exercise but are happy to be just getting about 50 cases a day of Delta but we are also aware of our vaccine immunity waning. Our booster shot program started about a month ago.

More cases in the last week than in the whole of 2020. But still, hospital numbers relatively stable.
