Re: Murder Hornets aka A Slow News Day

The other day was the first I'd heard of this type of hornet, and I assume it's the first the major media outlets heard of it too...from some smaller local news in the area no doubt. Diverting attention from something though? I was almost happy to read something other than Covid-19, death, Trump, economy, etc. that the media has been consumed with. Then I realized it's kind of a problem now too.

Things usually trickle out, not blow up unless there is a reason.

These hornets have been know for years. They are just new to the US. Even killer bees are usually only cared about in the areas they are active in or by people with an interest.

I can only imagine that video is posted by some psychopath, who the hell gets enjoyment out of purposely pitting creatures against each other? Especially for views.

It's news because it IS news.

On top of this, the giant hornets (2") are a threat to the bee population, and if bees stop pollinating, quite a few products humans depend on are in jeopardy.

This all reminds me of a 1978 dance song by Cerrone: "Supernature." I played it, as did most (gay) djs (the straights weren't into it). It was about Nature rebelling against man for all the harm he'd done (nuclear testing being the most prevalent theme).

And now we have 2" hornets that can pierce beekeepers outfits with their stingers. Would you rather NOT know? Is ignorance bliss or is this just fear? We can already see the ignorance of those who are rebelling for having to wear a mask, so they don't get infected with coronavirus - or infect others (symptomatically or asymptomatically). And people are grumbling over that. Can't go here. Can't go there. Have to wear a mask. Is this not preferable to dying or extinction?

Me, I want to know everything that's out there that's a threat to humans (and bees).

when I was a kid I learned everything has a purpose but seems like a lot of life has no real purpose --destroying the honeybees is not a good purpose---hornets, wasps, scorpions poisonous snakes and spiders---

Agreed, but the point is the video is years old. The media is acting like these hornets are brand new.

What is news is that the hornets are now in North America. And we've seen too many times how an Asian or European import has had devastating consequences for the North American ecosystem (including humans).

And it is news because it is just one more thing to have to deal with this year. Wait until the west coast fire season starts......

Again they have been in North America. So why did the media all act like they were first spotted a few days ago? If one or two outlets covered it fine, but all of them went into overdrive on it when it was not new. They just decided to now cover them.

I can only find that they have arrived in America in late 2019, nothing that suggests they have been in America for years. And considering that over the last few years the protection of the Honey Bee population is more on the rise it makes sense that more news is popping up now about them.

Maybe it was the hornets that killed my mum

Are they over here yet ?

/\ Surely by now you know that images of children are not permitted here.

ooops. I have asked for it to be converted to a link only, which is what I intended to do originally. Thanks for the catch.
