22 y/o moving to Dallas, TX

So, i'm finally graduating college and moving into the real world....which in this case involves a shift to Dallas, TX.

So i'm hoping some Texans are on here to tell me what there is to do in Dallas, where I should consider living, and what its like to be an out gay man in Texas (and Dallas, specifically).

any info would be really helpful!
 
Welcome to Dallas! The main gay area with most of the bars, etc. is along Cedar Springs near Oak Lawn Ave., just NW of downtown. This area is called "Oak Lawn." Some jokingly call it the "gay ghetto" but this is pretty much the epicenter. Your budget, your age and where you're going to work - Dallas is spread out just like Atlanta with traffic equally as bad - will influence where you want to live. The Oak Lawn area has all price points, however it's getting more expensive all the time. Uptown is nice (just north of downtown) with lots of apartments & condos but it's pricey. North Oak Cliff (just across the river southwest of downtown) has lots of cute houses and has a more laid-back atmosphere. Here you'll find a strong gay presence with lots of same-sex couples restoring older homes. I suggest you rent a place to live while you get familiar with the city. If you appreciate quality shopping, NorthPark is the place to be. If you prefer, there are areas all over town with quirky independent shops, too, so there's something for everyone.

Dallas is a great place to live and similar in size and demographics to Atlanta with all sorts of residential and shopping areas plus great museums, restaurants, etc. It's a cosmopolitan city with lots of well-dressed, educated people. Yes, there are narrow-minded redneck bigots but you'll find idiots like them anywhere.

Stanley Marcus (his family founded Neiman-Marcus and their original store is still downtown) was asked once what he liked about Dallas. He said, "Dallas has southern hospitality, northern ingenuity, eastern sophistication and western self-confidence." Having lived here all my life, I think that sums it up very well.

If you're into "politics" I can give you the run down on where to look, where to live, where to consider living, what might be considered a place to set up house while you're looking, and places to avoid.

As far as there is a "Gay Community?"

Dallas has one in a neighborhood known as "Oak Lawn/Cedar Springs."

Referred to by the family locals as the "Gayborhood."

None of us can really afford to live there anymore, so I guess it really depends upon how active you're planning on being socially after you move here.

Meaning, if you're the bar type you might want to find a place within a short cab ride close to there. ;)

If you're looking for "neighborhoods" where you are accepted as an out openly Gay Male, I'd suggest looking for residence in what's called the "West Village, North Oak Cliff, White Rock Lake, South Lamar," and if you're really on a budget, "The Love Field" area. ..|

But it's Dallas.

Anywhere you want to set up house in that part of Texas will be fine.

Dallas has the LARGEST Congregational Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in the Nation.

Out of all the cities that I've lived in, visited, or have actively been a part of, Dallas has one of the most centrally located "Gay Bar" areas of any city outside of NYC (Chelsea) than any city that I've ever been in.

I suppose it wouldnt hurt to expand on my original post. I've been accepted to Teach for America, and subsequently placed in Dallas. I'm nervous, but excited, since well, Texas does have its stereotype.

In that sense, centexfarmer, i'd be really grateful if you could let me know where not to go.

I'm not sure if any of you (centexfarmer, you might know?) know the bounds of Dallas Independent School District, but chances are that's where I'll be working. I'll be on a teacher's salary, so not too expensive, but at the same time, i want to have a life too :-) is there something like that in the 600 a month range? or am i eyeballing too low (or too high?).

this whole transition to the real world business is harder than i thought!

I'll actually be in Dallas on Apr. 17 or so, so if y'all have any suggestions about where to hang out for a night before i fly back to school, that'd be really great as well.

Wow I was born in Dallas. But now I live in califonia temporally. I think everyone hit the nail on the head as far as the oaklawn/ cedar springs area. But how'd oak cliff get thrown in? Unless it has good areas that I just haven't strolled in. Lol
