I was watching Heroes and they showed a preview for the movie 300 and it looks so epic and not just because every single guy has a 6 or 8 pac abs.

I can't tell if they are real actors or computer generated though, it looked real yet CGI at the same time check it out.

Essentially its a true story of how Spartan king Leonidis led an extremely small army of Greek Soldiers (300 of them his personal body guards from Sparta) to hold off an invading Persian army more than 20 times as large. The actual heroism of those who stood (and ultimately died) with Leonidis helped shape the course of Western Civilization, allowing the Greek city states time to organize an army which repelled the Persians. Set in 480 BC.

I just love historical movies.

Re: Movie "300"

It's a comic book (Frank Miller) adaptation of history, which rocks (you can get the graphic novel at stores). The actors are all real, the backgrounds are 100% green screen (like Sin City).

Re: Movie "300"

I agree! I can't wait for this one. It looks incredible!

lol, a film website said something similar when I read about it a couple of weeks ago. Except it said that should get the girls, gay guys, and the sexually confused dudes out to see it.

Re: Movie "300"

Because it is necessary that this gets posted in any discussion of the Battle of Thermopylae:
Ὦ ξεῖν’, ἀγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις ὅτι τῇδε
κείμεθα, τοῖς κείνων ῥήμασι πειθόμενοι

Re: Movie "300"

I love the trailer, and I can't wait for the movie. Hunks in almost nothing. Too good to be true. There should definitely be more movies like this, with less clothings for men. : )

Re: Movie "300"

What does it mean? For those of us who can't read Greek, that is ;)

I don't speak Greek either. I'd be surprised if you don't know this in some form, however; they're what John Ruskin called "The noblest group of words ever uttered by man"

O xein, aggellion Lakedaimonois hoti tede
keimetha, tois keinon remasi peithomenoi

That is the epitaph, composed by Simonides of Ceos, which the Spartans placed on the burial mound of Leonidas and the Three Hundred. A modern replica of the stone remains at Thermopylae to this day.

When translated directly into modern English, the couplet does not sound particularly inspiring. Most translations therefore give it a slight poetic twist in order to restore some of the elgaic quality of the original. It's usually rendered something along the lines of:

Go, tell the Spartans, stranger passing by,
That here, obedient to their laws, we lie.

Re: Movie "300"

It´s "amazing" how you could rant on neoclassical tragedy while being excited about something like... that.

Re: Movie "300"

It's one of those films I really want to see.

Reminds me of films such as Troy, Lord Of The Rings etc.. Which I'm not TOO keen on, these days.. But I've seen a couple of previews, and I do kinda like what I've seen, so far.

Re: Movie "300"

Thermopylae is a nice place for a stop, right on the Athens-Thesaloniki highway. Big bronze of Leonides with two over sized nude marble statues. Across the road and up a small hill is the battle site, with remains of the wall they built. Worth a look.

Great story, great battle.

Re: 300

This movie looks brilliant, I am so excited it is not even funny!

Re: 300

For the love of Good, Hard, Solid, Beautiful MEN, I vow to visit the cinema this week!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 300

Without Frank Miller in the director's chair, I feel a little apprehensive.
