Hi, there.

I'm thinking of getting an iPhone, and the plan that I am interested in buying has a 3 Gigabyte limit for internet use. But I just don't know if that's a lot, or if it's not enough. What can I compare it to?

Also, is there an app that tells you how much data you've used?

Cheers!

Most people would find 3 GB per month to be a tolerable limit, for a phone - unless you plan to use the phone as a tether or hotspot for other computers. You won't be doing movie torrents on your phone or downloading PC operating systems.

Mp3 files average about 5 MB, so 3 GB would be about 600 songs downloaded for the month. YouTube videos vary a lot more in size than mp3s, but typically run about 10 to 50 MB. If you use about 25 MB as a crude average, 3 GB would be the equivalent of 120 YouTube videos. So, 3 GB per month limits you to about 20 mp3 song downloads per day, or about 4 YouTube videos watched per day, every day of the month.

I'm sure there are apps which allow you to monitor your 3G usage, but I have no idea what they cost, nor can I recommend any specific programs (I am not an iPhone user).

BTW, there are persistent and credible rumors of a Verizon iPhone, sometime in January 2011. Verizon's plans are typically more expensive than other carriers, but you might want to wait a couple weeks to see what they offer.

Remember that if you are in a Wifi hotspot your data is free and doesn't count in your plan. A lot will depend on where you are using your phone. I have the 2GB plan and have never ran over.

If you're with AT&T, the top limit is 2GB.

You can send a text to #DATA and it'll tell you how much data you've used up until that point.

You'd have to use your phone a LOT to reach that... I'm talking streaming music 24/7, watching loads of YouTube vids, etc.

My heaviest usage was 1.5GB and that's because I was away from home and tethered my laptop. But most places have WiFi nowadays, so just connect to that whenever you can.

As mentioned above, unless you're using your phone as a tethered modem, it would be almost impossible to use 3GB a month, especially if you have regular access to wifi.

I use a free app called Consume to monitor data and call usage of my phone and my home internet plan.

On my plan I get 2gb a month and I rarely go over 1 gig and that's with fairly moderate use - although I don't really watch youtube and other video's apps on 3G.

I use my wifi to use Internet on my phone, but when I'm out I keep my Internet activity to a low. I've had my phone for two weeks and I only managed to use up 59MB they said 2GB is enough that they never had anyone go over that limit unless you are downloading HD movies or using Netflix every day. 3GB is not needed.

I heard there was a special price on the iphone 3GS for like 50 bucks but I assume it was only for a couple of days.

So I got the iPhone with the 3gbs limit. I got it on thusday night, and according to the iphone SETTINGS>GENERAL>USAGE I've used 180Mb. That seems like a lot... I have been browsing a LOT and downloading apps.

I am LOVING the iPhone, by the way...!

You always use more at first, while you're in the honeymoon phase. :-)

Just keep on eye on it. And use wifi whenever you can.

Yeah use wifi as much as possible even if you hit the free wifi spots it will pop up on your phone. I have had my phone for two weeks and I only used 80mb and that is with using the Internet, foursquare, Facebook and farmville.

You'll use a ton at first, but it'll slow down once you settle into a usage routine.
