4,000,000 gallons per day

*sigh*

NO one seems to care, Mark....

It's a sad reflection of how self-absorbed our gay brethren can be... :(

I'm not sure it's the self-absorbed part so much as it is... no one has figured out how to fix it. We lowly John Q. Publics don't know what the solution is so we're reluctant to even talk about it.

Hopefully we've got some people ready to help the animals and start some cleanup of the coastal habitats at least...

This sums up how I feel. I definitely care, I just don't know what I can really do about it.

^^I may not know how to solve it, but I sure as hell don't agree that it's a solution or even a good idea to stuff it with trash. I mean, wtf?! Maybe you're right, there's not much we can do. Years of human consumption and waste has brought our environments to the very brink of pollution and depletion. I guess, however, we shouldn't be so cynical, and try to preserve what is left by calling out the fucktards, from the oil execs who negligently pursue profit to the greedy politicians who allow oil interests to continue to stymie environmental and alternative energy legislation, that allowed this to happen. But if the apathetic public just accepts there's nothing that can be done, than there really is no point in even talking about it.

It's a series of careless errors that we discover in the hours after a disaster. Of course, no one can be bothered to make sure it's done right before all hell breaks loose. Story of our lives.

I can't believe that a company that knows how to get at oil at the bottom of the ocean doesn't know how to plug it up.

Nope, they don't know how, and they refuse let somebody who DOES know how do it for them...

Except they've allowed the military to help now, I think...... but what about the thousands of volunteers that are ready and willing to independently contribute?? What pride do you have left to protect, BP????

On the subject of nobody caring, I think the human public is getting tired... one disaster after another these days, it seems... when people are dying and economies are weakening, it's hard to grasp the reality of something like an oil spill just yet, especially since it hasn't REALLY started doing its damage... myself, I can't even wrap my head around 4,000,000 gallons of oil, it's just inconceivable to me. I feel like all I can do is wait. It kills me.

And the company will go bankrupt, funnel all their money to a new company and the people of America will be left with the clean up.

OH... and Sarah Palin will still be saying "DRILL BABY DRILL"

So very true. It's like they're trying to fix it during their coffee breaks or something.

It is making the environmental impact of the oil sands projects look pretty insignificant by comparison.

,,but they do, or have a very good idea however until forced they will not or cannot due to lacking the proper equipment to get at something in that deep water where the pressure is great and the temperature cold.
They must be ordered to start directing the super tankers, and leasing super tankers to clean up the surface. This sort of salvage after the Kuwait war oil disaster worked extremely well however it means pulling the fleets of massive ships making tons of money hauling oil out of service where it cost money instead of making bucks.

More importantly they need the deep water submersibles that are apparently not required for drilling operations via regulation/law. The USA lacks this technology that Japan, China, Russia & North Sea drilling requires. They must get at the blow out instead of this silly blowing golf balls or sticking a pipe like a straw into the blow out on something under extreme pressure a mile below.

$$$$$ its what its about. Time for President Obama .... past time .... to take charge of this and force BP to do it or take control and allow the Navy to do it.

That's not necessarily true. There are both manned and unmanned submersibles available which could have been there within days to work on the problem and solve it at its source. The only thing stopping them is the expense.

Hell, if James Cameron can go 2 1/2 miles down to the Titanic. . .

They should maybe hire a gay guy to plug the hole lol.

Oh, they can plug it. They've always been able to plug it. The issue is whether or not the line will be usable once it's plugged. BP still wants access to the oil in there, and if they do a permanent seal, well, they won't be access that oil.

This has become Obama's Katrina.

It is quite sad. I cannot help but to feel that the government is in bed with BP on this one.

At this point I think things are so bad that they do not want to own up to it.

I can't believe that a company that knows how to get at oil at the bottom of the ocean doesn't know how to plug it up.

The answer is sad but simple.

Corporations can profit from pulling it out. There is not enough profit involved to figure out how to stop it from happening in the first place.

Everyday more and more things come out -- oversights, failed inspections, shortcuts, etc.

The fact that Halliburton had a hand in it makes me cringe. We always knew Cheney wasn't much of an environmentalist -- this just proves it.
