Hell’s Kitchen
It’s OK to yell, scream, spit and throw things. What’s more, it’s all right to be rude and demean others.

The Amazing Race
When travelling around the world, it is OK to push your way to the front of a line to get on a train, plane or taxi. It is also OK to berate cab drivers who do not speak English, and make fun of cultures that are foreign to you.

Survivor
You are encouraged to lie, cheat and steal from others. You are expected to form cliques and shun others as outcasts, all in the name of being No. 1.

America’s Next Top Model
Only beautiful people will succeed in life.

The Celebrity Apprentice
The road to the top in the business world is paved with the crushed souls of those you backstabbed and steamrolled over to push your ideas through.

American Idol
The most popular kid in class will always come out on top.

LOL kinda true....

Unfortunately for some of em LIFE encourage you to be like that

Fortunately I've managed to totally avoid those shows.

So have I. I've only ever seen the promos for them and that's quite enough for me.

I don't know about other countries, but our Global network began a Reality Channel on July 1st. Reality TV 24/7.

Frightening.

Reality TV isn't the problem, it's the parents letting their kids watch shows obviously geared for an older audience.

I think current amercian TV shows try to portray the worst excesses of fashion culture as if they are COOL to attract young non-discerning audiences. These youngsters unquestioningly take these disgusting manners on as etiquette norms.

One thing that drives me scatty is the need for americans to shout at each other on their TV shows. Not even my friends shout at me so i just change over to british TV when this happens.

Oh and did I mention the excessive violence, shootings, bombings, disfigurement.

Yeah Turner Classic Movies are a whole lot better than the current crap out there.

IMHO of course!!

if nobody is watching this terrible programming how is still on the air. i haven't met anyone who admits to watching this drivel. I have never seen any of the shows mentioned in the OP and I don't plan to either. I find myself becoming embarrassed for the people on the show and I feel uncomfortable watching.

Seems like the 'writer' was looking for cheap hits on a cheap topic that he really didn't think much on. Way to regurgitate what lazy Parents have been saying for years.

If you had bothered to read the rest of the article, you would have read what inspired the writer to write what he did:

The episode of Hell’s showed a kid colouring a picture of host Gordon Ramsay, and the sweet little thing had drawn a word bubble off to the side. In the word bubble were the words “You donkey!!” These words are often spoken by the irritable chef, accompanied by a fine mist of spittle, and expletives strong enough to make a sailor blush.

What this child has learned through attending a taping of Hell’s Kitchen – and doubtless watching the show at home with her parents – is that it’s OK to name-call, throw things and verbally abuse our fellow human beings.

The shows are made to sell the fad crap to make profits.

As for parents controlling their kids' viewing habits, that worked decades ago when most families were lucky to afford one TV set which was in the living room. Now days kids each have a TV and often Internet computer along with stereos, etc. in their own rooms, even those on welfare.
I still remember the expression "Vast wasteland" from four and a half decades ago but TV and especially radio, have declined since then(with a few exceptions).

Shows depicting minors in adult roles with sex, smoking, drinking, etc. are also uncalled-for.

Hell's Kitchen still reminds me of an area in New York.

The thing I hate most about these shows other than Amercian Idol...
People that have no talent are becoming celebraties. My ex-boss was a complete bitch...which apprently will qualify her for most of the reality shows on tv today.

i agree with almost everything u said...except that america's top model doesn't completely do as u said...coz to be honest some of the girls that are on the show aren't the typical beauty and some u even don't think of as the ones that could win this....but mostly what comes off as wrong in it mainly is the way the girls treat each other most of the time....that's the shitty part...the bulling and bitchy attitude that some have....well that's the way i see it :)..but i do agree on everything else 200%

With the increase and advancement of technology, everyone might be a part of a Big Brother-esque in the future. Having your daily activities in your home and out in public recorded and broadcasted for all the public to see.

Alternative lessons learned:

Hell’s Kitchen
When your skill set leaves you just another number in menial labor you run the risk that you will be screamed at and demeaned. Get an education so you can bring more value to the workplace and in turn will be more valued.

The Amazing Race
Others will cut in lines and be generally vile, but if you are cooperative and take time to learn about other cultures you will do just as well or better, and have more fun too.

Survivor
Building solid relationships will help you advance, and in the end a reputation for screwing people over will only hurt you.

America’s Next Top Model
Beautiful people are just as fucked up, petty and stupid as anyone else. Maybe more!

The Celebrity Apprentice
Being a celebrity isn't a guarantee of success - look how sad and washed up they often are. Focus on solid skills and expertise instead of fleeting fame.

American Idol
Don't do drugs or you'll end up like Paula Abdul.

No I did.

But that isn't the shows fault.

You certainly can't lay all the blame on the parents or the children. The programmes bear a lot of the responsibility and blame as well. Why on earth would they allow children in the audiences to watch that trash?

These shows aren't meant to teach anybody anything

Oh, come on. I've never even seen any of those shows except for the promotions and I've learnt that you can be a complete obnoxious, insulting, humiliating asshole and make millions of dollars.

Everything Greg David said in his report happens in the promotions for those programmes. I'm sure a lot worse happens in the shows themselves. The kids don't even have to watch the shows. They just have to see the commercials and they learn enough to see that it's cool to grow up and be a brat.

There's an option on most cable services called Parental Control. Parents can choose to block an entire channel from view and put a password to unlock it, put a password in order to turn on the TV, and turn off the TV after 30 minutes or so.

Parents have no excuses.

Shows like Dora the Explorer, Wow Wow Wubzy (I love saying that), and Yo Gabba Gabba are to educate and entertain children. Tool Academy and Family Guy are to entertain adults. Broadcasting networks aren't trying to appeal to kids and they aren't there to parent them.

If a child sees a commercial with adult behavior or language, explain to your child that's not the appropriate way to act. What's so hard about that?

When you plop a child in front of a TV for hours on end instead of putting them outside or interacting with them, that's when you have a problem.

I'm a little surprised Gordon Ramsay is actually allowed to employ people. Given how he rants and raves and berates and treats his staff I cannot believe somebody hasn't sent labour lawyers in there.

And I'm more surprised that one of his staff hasn't snapped and just skewered him with a rack of sharp knives yet.

Meh. They're entertaining. I wouldn't let my (non-existent) children watch them. If a parent lets their kid watch The Surreal Life or some other 'reality show' they have issues.

Please. Like children need reality TV to learn these essential life lessons.
