YIGHTZ!!!

Right now I just want to go down there and start helping people...

BUT -- they're still having aftershocks and they're under a Tsunami warning... :help:

That is WORSE than just being blocked out by the federal government (like the hurricane that hit New Orleans)...

(CNN) -- A major earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and power lines and inflicting what its ambassador to the United States called a catastrophe for the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation.

This is HORRIBLE...

:confused::confused::confused:

I read that, I am very concerned about the people of Haiti

they have nothing, nada, zip!

and now this!

this is awful

I am also concerned about earthquakes in that area... it has been quiet for about 100 years... and that worries me

:(

Well -- since they've gotten their new President -- Bill Clinton and others have been trying to bring investment back into the country...

BUT...

The buildings are still OLD and that was a HUGE earthquake...

And all I want to do is help those poor people...

Right now -- I'm afraid to even hear the casualty toll...

:(:(:(

Their soil is gone, they cannot even grow food, or have any infrastructure to have industry

500 years of people raping the land and leaving have left that country with nothing

and now an Earthquake

The tsunami warning has been cancelled but the proximity of the earthquake to the surface (six miles deep vs. 100's of miles) and the lack of building codes means that there is probably going to be a huge loss of life and massive devastation.

I feel so sorry for those people in Haiti...it seems like they cannot get ahead.

This is bad. Real bad.

and now an Earthquake

More like 200 years.

Absolutely horrible

The large white building at the beginning of the YouTube clip in Tadaa's post is, or was, the National Palace.

Below is a picture of it before the quake. You can see how the roof and upper story have pancaked down onto the ground floor.

Earthquakes are scary and horrible.......................help continues to poor into Hati but it is hard.......................unfortunately it will be a long hard recovery period.......................

a really good friend of mine is in port au prince now, I'm kind of freaking out. even if it turns out he's fine it still sounds horrible for the people and for anyone who was there during it

why would you give a flying fuck about politics, let alone post about them right now

Just heard that the great humanitarian, Rush Limbaugh has raced to Port au Prince and is digging in the rubble desperately searching for earthquake victims. He is quickly organizing for the hospitals to be rebuilt donating his vast fortune and helicoptering the injured to his elegant Palm Beach waterfront mansion until the hospitals are rebuilt.

Anne Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Sarah Palin & Glenn Beck have assembled and will leave for Haiti to assist in the rescue efforts, each armed with picks and shovels and their checkbooks.

Whenever I hear of a terrible disaster I often think of how incredibly useless these people are. All the suffering in the world and then there are this bunch. I wonder how they will politicize this and make it Obama's fault?

*****************
Okay....serious now. I pray for all of the victims. What a horrible tragedy.

Not only them but we also have to look into ourselves and realize how stupid all this porn and self prostrate relief are when standing before such a tragedy.

I feel awful for th0se people... Where will they find the resources to clear away the rubble, let alone, to rebuild? It worries me to see so many people walking among the rubble. If there's another aftershock, what hasn't fallen already will fall on top of those people milling around the ruins. Those people need to be moved out into a safe place; a tent city needs to be erected to give them shelter... But who's going to do it?

Haiti earthquake: Bodies piled up on the streets
as disaster leaves 'thousands' dead

Isn't it just a crying shame?

Haiti turned itself into a complete shithole and now on top of that, this.

I expect that the biggest impact will be the depopulation of Haiti as countries everywhere are now pressured to accept refugees.

Then we'll see how supportive North and South America and Europe really are.

The Canadian GG will likely work to soften up the conservative political retards in Canada but I'm not holding out much hope for the other countries.

i have a friend who's in haiti doing some humanitarian work and i got an email saying people are preparing themselves for a death toll approaching 500,000 people, making it one of the world's most horrific disasters in history. haiti desperately needs help. the US, Canada, France, and Venezuela have been first to ante up some significant relief efforts - but they need all the help they can get.

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2007/impact/

CNN has a comprehensive list on this link of how you can help.

i'm not a religious guy, but hopefully if there's something out there, they'll help the people of Haiti tonight.

Maybe you seem to forget that Haiti was one of the richest colonies in the world when under French rule.

You must be shitting me, do you know what the cost of such "prosperity" was in terms of human suffering and environmental degradation? Do you know what the state of local Haitians was during the same period that Haiti was one of the richest colonies of France? I mean India was the richest British colony, but it had never seen famine of such a grave degree until after they came under British thuggery. "Richest colony" does not mean much.

Indeed many countries have given up the stability and prosperity of colonial rule just for the sake of independence.

Stability for whom? Which subjugated country was prosperous under colonial rule? Was it prosperity for all, or only for the collaborationist elites who facilitated the colonisation? The experience obviously wasn't uniform, but it was hardly out of benevolence that the Europeans took over lands. It was because of the three Gs: Glory (competing with other powers), God (spreading Christianity), and most importantly, Gold (stealing resources). It was indeed more stable, but stable for the smooth facilitation of the colonial project. And not to forget that racism, especially scientific racism, the same concept that Nazis wholeheartedly accepted, was born during the same time, as it was necessary to justify how natives were treated, ie. race inherently determined character and capacity, therefore making it necessary for white men to carry their burden of civilising the "savages". Prosperity indeed, but only for some.
