Does anyone know where the epicenter of the quake was?

I saw an interview they did with a seismologist at the British Geological Survey.

He said that what actually happened was a rupture of the fault line along 400km of the sea bed. So what happened was that the entire sea floor jolted up (like the road has done in WagWag's pic above) all along the tectonic plate boundary, which shifted the water and created the tsunami - exactly as happened in the Indian Ocean earthquake/tsunami in 2004.

If it's any crumb of comfort to the Japanese, it's highly unlikely they'll experience another earthquake this size for 100 years.

I was at the gym when the live clips were coming in. I found it really disturbing at some of the reactions. I saw a couple people that had big smiles on their faces as they were watching it, as if they were enjoying watching it happen. I will never be able to relate to those people.

Well, at the risk of being morbidly ironic, some day in the future the Japanese could very well be doing tai-chi while watching the utter devastation of the west coast of the U.S on their TVs.

the video doesn't make sense, i don't believe.

I didn't watch the whole video but read some comments. "Jesus showed her," and she apparently uses Wikipedia for her research? I mean, I use Wikipedia, too, but not for something like research. :/

Let's just hope that it was a nervous reaction. It's still terrible they smiled at it :/

Anyway I just saw this video. Something interesting that a commenter pointed out was at 2:23 it looked like a UFO or some really fast vehicle came from the left and jetted off to the right of the screen

I don't know what the object is, but it certainly isn't "jetting" anywhere. Look at the rest of the screen--the camera is panning and the helicopter is moving in a way such that the perspective change makes the object look like it is moving much, much faster than it really is.

Heaven forb...

Mother nature is such a byotch!! The number of lost rose from 45 to 300!! Next, they're probably going to say 3000! :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(

I don't like RT put their logo on someone else video.
If every news channel put their logos on the screen, there would be full of other logos on the same video.

By the way, the thing flying is a helicopter.

Other than hurricanes, earthquakes are the deadliest natural diasters. And today is sadly proof of that.

I saw Entertainment Tonight reporting about the quake. Those people have a bizarre definition of entertainment.

Oh man. My thoughts and prayers to all those affected (not including the losers who think they are Japaneses because they watch anime and feel they are somehow personally affected by this. Go throw some water on your face because that's only water-related disaster you will ever get in your parents' basement).

The whole nuclear emergency thing is freaking me out. A nuclear leak. Eek.

I hate to say this but I am glad this time around the disaster was in a "rich" country. I know this can be a foot in the mouth moment for me but I can safely say we wont have a Haiti or a Pakistan on our hands.

Japan is rich. The Japanese people are very capable. Gambate!

First the quake, then the tsunami, and possibly next nuclear meltdown. Talk about your bad days.

With a hurricane one can have several days warning. Plenty of time to drive/fly north.

With an earthquake there's no warning at all. You just hope you aren't killed in your bed.

So tell me how hurricanes are better.. :-)

Nuclear meltdown in progress!

-Fukushima prefecture says Tepco's no.1 reactor ceiling has collapsed

Jiji news agency said there had been an explosion at the stricken 40-year-old Daichi 1 reactor and TV footage showed vapour rising from the plant, which lies 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo

Over the last 4 hours, there have been minor quakes increasing in frequency near the east coast of Honshu, Japan. They've gradually increased from 4.3 to 6.1. There's a pattern of a small one then a larger one, each one bigger than the previous. Whether it's building up to something I don't know - but they're warning the east coast to stay on high ground.

Well, let's just agree to disagree. :-)

I can always escape an approaching hurricane.

An earthquake on the way, the weathermen never see.
