Hey guys,

Stupid question I'm sure. I went to get tested today at Sex Health Clinic and so the nurse was gonna take my blood but had a hard time finding a vein on my arm. So she asked the more experienced nurse (who was analyzing people's swabs at the microscope) to do it for he and so she's the one who drew my blood after tapping my arm a few times. Afterwards I realized she wasn't wearing gloves and so I'm kinda scared something from the swabs, some STI might have jumped on me...

Can any doc/nurse here reassure me that it's just my imagination running wild?

Thanks in advance

Though the technique was very poor, likely as not, she or he is in more danger of catching something from you than you from them. Nothing of course is 100% but sure you could "catch" something. Hard to say. They could have used hand sanitizer too, but still poor technique.

Anyway, I don't think you have a lot to worry about for now.

As a lab tech student(we're the ones who do the routine blood collections), I've learned that most places do not use gloves when doing collections. It is poor practice(and I'm learning to do it with gloves on), but it's also easier, especially when you have someone who is hard to collect.

You're chances of catching anything is very slim, but this is why we're supposed to wear gloves...to put the patient at ease. Try not to let it bother you.

I'm feeling like shit now. And my bf is coming to visit in 2 weeks, what the fuck am I supposed to do??

It is your imagination running wild.

There.

I'm a med student and I NEVER wear gloves when taking bloods. Its really bad practice but its so much easier feeling a vein with no gloves on. I also think a study was done last year that showed that there is absolutely no difference between rates of infection during venepuncture (blood taking) - which are extremely low anyway - with and without gloves.

As for your actual concerns - I don't feel you have anything serious to worry about. It would be extremely unlikely if the nurse contracted an STD from looking at swabs, and then infected you with an STD by touching your arm. The chances of that happening are unbelievably low, so don't worry about it!

Just so you will know, gloves are next to worthless unless the careprovider has washed their hands and put a new pair of gloves on between each patient. Anything that would be on the technicians hands would just as easily adhere to the gloves.

It's more important that they wash their hands- gloves or not.

I can't remember someone ever wearing gloves when drawing blood from me. They do use disinfectants before though.

UPDATED: Called the clinic and they told me there's no way I could have gotten anything since the swabs are encompassed in glass. case closed. Thanks :)
