On Monday, November 23 at 8PM on ABC they will be showing the 50th Anniversary of a Charlie Brown Christmas Special, followed by A Charlie Brown Christmas.

When "A Charlie Brown Christmas" first aired on CBS I was 8 years old and I didn't know it at the time but 1965 would be the last year that my entire family would gather nightly to watch TV together.

The world of entertainment was a completely different landscape in '65 and many of the Holiday Specials back in the day were of the live action, musical variety with a strong religious message. "A Charlie Brown Christmas" not only bucked that tradition it signaled that there were big changes headed for television as we knew it.

Yeah, we've all seen it a million times but in its first broadcast "ACBC" was sort of groundbreaking. The music was not religious or Christmas-like familiar. The characters were voiced by real children yet the theme was very adult - seasonal depression. Personally, I'd never seen anything like it, and the result was, (big confession here), I actually didn't like it.

So all the stories you guys have heard about CBS executives demanding last minute changes are most likely true. You had to compare "ACBC" to all the other holiday shows that came before to understand all the objections. But circumstances were working against CBS. The show had a very small budget with no reserves for revisions. There wasn't enough time to change anything before the advertised broadcast schedule. And Charles Schulz actually liked what he saw even with all the production flaws, many still visible even in the remastered versions.

The magic of broadcasting is "Repetition" and as the decades have rolled by my opinion of "ACBC" has changed. As a matter of fact, I find the shows flaws very endearing. Or maybe I'm just growing old, lol!

The admirable aspect of Schultz's work here is the way he held out for the "meaning of Christmas" quote from the Gospel of Luke by Linus.

Other than religious-specific specials and television shows, I believe this one remains the only children's special mentioning the religious definition of the holiday.

Didn't the voice actor for Charlie Brown just get 4 years for...something or another?

Maybe he should have hired Linus as his attorney...??

You nailed it MJEH89, I can't think of any other animated Holiday Special that captured the true meaning of Christmas in such a gentle yet powerful manner. It's one the reasons "A Charlie Brown Christmas" has remained while so many other specials have disappeared.

Not many remember the Lutheran sponsored special, "Christmas Is", starring Benji and Waldo, from 1970.

Charlie Brown mentions how commercialized Christmas is, which rings truer even more so today. With retail stores opening early on Thanksgiving evening. It is all about making money and more money. But that is not the true meaning of the holiday season. It should be time spent with families and being together to enjoy the holiday seasons.

I have to correct myself here.

I think CB Xmas is the only Xmas special still shown on TV today because too many other Xmas shows that mention outright or even hint at religion/spirituality/G-d aren't shown anymore. Broadcasters don't want to offend nor alienate anyone. CB Xmas has stood the test of time and broken through the cracks, so to speak.

And yet, after 50 years of the CB Xmas special being shown, people still don't get it... :(

I agree. Hugs!
