As bad as I know anorexia/bulemia is, I am considering it.

I have got to lose weight, and it is not happening on my own power, and my BMI is so borderline (38.5) that my MD and insurance cannot/will not do anything.

I have even considered gaining more weight so my BMI will go up and I can get help.

My health is suffering, and so is my self-esteem and social life.

I don't know why I posted this. Maybe it is just a cry for help...

No matter how big, how overweight we are, we have to try our best to help our body by getting a better healthier condition so we can live longer. Even if it means losing a lot of weight in the process to make ourselves feel better. Sometimes we just have to do what we have to do.

Bullemia is a criminal waste of good food and will rot your teeth. Anorexia is a perfectly normal sized person starving themselves due to their perception that they are overweight. You need to use some self dicipline here. I think you should join a weight loss / exercise program or club where you will have the support of others and make new friends as well (*8*)

Very good suggestion :)

I'm gonna see if I can help him.

When you starve yourself your metabolism slows down and is harder to loose weight, so try just to eat healthy and is small portions any time you are hungry. And don't throw up, is gross.

smaller portions... and more exercise... I'd focus more on the latter. And believe me, I know it is hard.

Dexy: Please listen. FIRST, you need to find out what's "eating" YOU. If you're MD and insurance company won't help, please try to contact your county mental health organization or some other charity that can refer you to low cost or no cost mental health professionals. Self- discipline will not work until you come to realize WHY you have such low self-esteem. Get going my friend. I wish you all the best. You CAN change you life!!

Hi!
Don´t do anorexia/bulemia shit.
You have to change what you eat and drink.
So try one month with no drinks with sugar (coke, etc... )in it - pure water is best.
Read the ingredients of everything you eat (cereals, ...) if there is sugar in it it is not good.
Eat fruits and vegetables at least twice a day.
No / less fat.

Try to write down the things you eat during one week.
And then take a close and critical look at it.

Dont try to eat less, just try to eat the right things.

And a little bit of sport should help too of course.

Dont try to eat less, just try to eat the right things.

It's important, though, to watch calories. You can gain weight eating nothing but healthy foods or you can lose weight eating cookies. Of course, yes, it's important to eat healthy foods. But even with healthy foods if you take in more calories than your body burns, you're gonna gain weight.

Thanks for all your help...but Chris is the first and only person to say more that 'eat less/exercise more.
He has given me hope, confidence, and a safe and effective way to lose the weight.

Losing weights a tough one, I weighed 10st 9lbs in August 2005 and I now weigh approx 8st 4lbs (going up or down a couple of lbs a day). I dieted strictly for approx 6 months to lose the weight and its been well worth it (I do no exercise at all yet still have basic muscle definition due to a bodyfat content of less than 10%).
My advice for now is work on your diet and dont worry about exercise, once youve got the diet sorted and can manage then start doing some exercise (weights not cardio).
What I'm gonna do is list what I did on my diet to lose my weight.

Breakfast:

1x Wheata-bix with skimmed milk

or

Branflakes with skimmed milk

and (must eat daily)

6 Skinned Almonds

Brunch:

Small portion of mixed nuts (none flavoured/salted) and raisens

or

Banana/Apple/Pear/Orange

Lunch:

Sandwich on brown bread (optional light spread) filled with salad and white meat (chicken)

or

Wholegrain pasta salad with tuna (or other fish)

or

Lightly dressed salad with diced chicken/turkey

Followed by either

1x low fat yoghurt

or

Piece of fruit

Mid afternoon

1x piece of fruit

Tea/Dinner

Vegetable based meal without bread or meat

or

Chicken + low fat chips + gravey

Should try not to eat after 7pm on an evening to give you time to fully digest your food.
The most important thing is to drink approx 500ml of ice cold water 6 times a day, this burns more calories than it gives as your body has to heat the water up.

I'm not going to lie it is really difficult, I woke up one day and decided I no longer wanted to be fat so did something about it. As the lbs start to fall off your self-confidence will get a massive boost.
Hope this helps and I'm sure if you keep coming back here for support we will all help you through your time trying to lose weight. Lastly ignore BMI its total bollox if you dont mind could you post your weight, height and body build? These are much better than BMI!

Everyone else has given you good advice as well. It's just hard to know the actual situation without hearing it first hand from the person experiencing it because everyone is different and they do what works for them.

But I'm glad I could help and I hope you keep me updated on your progress!

Hey dexyboi86,

You've have been given fine tips and support from others here to get you started on your goal of losing weight without resorting to the devastating road of bulimia and anorexia. Just to add ...

I was about 227 lbs. last January (at and at a height of 5'11 that is classified as obese). I modified my diet similar to what bicause outlined above - if anything, the most important diet change is decreasing sugar intake, as the caloric load sneaks up on you. You will notice a change by simply switching from regular soda to diet soda and more water.

I also took up running as my primary exercise. By running, I did not run nonstop at first (nor do I still even today). A lot of it was walking in between but over time I was able to run farther before I walked. I would also enter local running events so that I could have a timed record of my progress. My first race: I "ran" (mostly walked) 4 miles in about 55 minutes.

Today, I am about 194 lbs. and my best 4-mile time is @ 41 minutes. I am working toward running the NYC marathon next year.

I am only sharing my story to you so that you can be inspired into believing that you can emerge from a situation in which you feel helpless as I did. Back then I never though I would be in such better shape now and happier for it. It takes a lot of determination and you have to want it - NEVER QUIT, even when the going gets tough. If you do not like running, take up another sport you find appealing. You may not feel good about it at first, but persevere and you will get better, start having more fun and the weight loss will be one the benefits - not to mention a much improved self-image.

dexyboi86, it's possible - take that chance and believe in yourself - I know you can do it, as I and many others have.

I am rooting for you buddy (*8*)

You've got fruits in there, veggies, protein, lean meats, good fats and whole grains. Sounds like you've got a good plan going on there. Just keep those habits up for good and you'll do just fine.

You eat like I do most of the time. But I still allow myself a little room for foods I love. I haven't given anything up, I just eat certain things in extreme moderation.

Turning to an eating disorder to cure obesity to live a healthier life, well I am not sure, but its a pretty lousy choice. You might lose the health consequences of being obese, however you will also gain the health problems of having an eating disorder, which are numerous. As for your self esteem, losing weight isn't going to change that. As for your social life, most of the problems are probably those that are in your mind and not in reality. I won't pretend that it isn't more difficult to be big in society today, but its not exactly difficult to either. You also aren't likely to attract the people you want to with a low self esteem, which you will have no matter what your body looks like.

If you are having health effects from the obesity, you should be able to get those treated. What effects do you have? Lethargy? High blood pressure? Sore joints? Most of those are treatable through lifestyle changes, diet, and medication. You can treat the effects of obesity without having to starve yourself to lose weight.

I would be classified as morbidly obese. I am not happy about my body by any means, and I am on blood pressure medicine at the age of 24, which is not good at all. I need to lose weight to benefit myself, and am slowly but surely getting there, mostly because I am being mostly lazy in going about it (ie mostly exercise, modest diet changes). We act as if weight loss is something that is mysterious and hard to accomplish, but it isn't. All of these fads are ways to attempt to make it easier. But a good diet and a decent exercise program will do it. But its a marathon, not a sprint, which is an overused expression, but i couldn't think of anything better.

25 stone isn't too bad it could be much much worse, I think by tackling it now you're going to do yourself a great favour. Have you set yourself a target for where you want to be say March next year? Try to give yourself realistic targets for your weight loss, I'm not going to lie and say youll be able to get yourself from fat to thin in a couple of months, but if you stick to it youll get their.
As an additional motivator if you can do the following. Get a tape measure and measure your waist, chest, neck, upper thigh, calfs, arms etc etc (hope you get the idea) and write all of these down (or put them into an excel spreadsheet) do the same every month, the tape measure doesnt lie and it will give you in figures physical losses. Couple this with taking a couple of photos of yourself at your current weight making sure to date them, do the same every two months and you will then be able to see the difference. IMO this can be vital if you need motivation as although the scales may say you're losing weight it can be hard to physically see a difference. A year down the line from now youll be able to look back at your photos and stats and see the difference.
And dont forget weigh yourself in the morning (naked/in your boxers) before you've eaten anything as it will give a better idea of your true weight. Lastly don't weigh yourself more than twice a month it takes time to lose weight and weighing yourself every day and not seeing a difference will demotivate you.

You've got fruits in there, veggies, protein, lean meats, good fats and whole grains. Sounds like you've got a good plan going on there. Just keep those habits up for good and you'll do just fine.

I don't eat as well as I use to (have a few cakes and that now) but I try to keep as close to that as I posted. I no longer diet and I've never felt better, I was getting quite depressed with my weight when I was 18 now that I'm 20 and happy with my weight I've never been happier.

The word "diet" isn't even in my vocabulary. I don't diet. I just watch what I eat.

But deprivation doesn't work either. I don't deny myself anything. If I want pizza or a piece of fried chicken or I'm in the mood to hit the Chinese buffet, I have it. I just eat it in extreme moderation. These things are occasional treats for me, not everyday foods. If I want a cookie or a piece of chocolate, I eat it. I just make sure it's within my calorie allowance. Because yes, I DO watch calories. I'm a serious food snob and a calorie snob and a health-food snob and all that fun crap. But it doesn't mean I deny myself the goodies. I gotta have my Taco Bell at least once a week

I'm glad you're happy with yourself and you've got those things under control ;)
