I don't know if anyone watched 'A Mother's Son' last night...but a mother suspects that her son could be the killer of a local girl, and has the dilemma of whether to denounce him, or protect him and help cover up what he did...

..if you had a close relative..child/parent/sibling etc..and you suspected they had committed a serious violent crime, what would you do..report them to the police or protect them ?

I'd report you to the police.

For any capital crime, report. For intangibles, it depends upon who was harmed financially, or vandalized, or whatever.

If you hurt someone physically, you're going to be turned over to the cops. I might be your friend to the end in prison, but I won't shield a violent person.

What if your daughter after years of abuse killed her husband but had done it in a way which she was gonna get away with it, would you hand the lassie in if you found out her guilt.

I'd protect you, nah as in everything it all depends on the circumstances, if the woman was a constant nag i'd applaud you.

Well if i ever die under mysterious circumstances you know who to report.

Not sure what I would do. I wouldn't protect them, but I might not report it either. If it was serious, I would report it.

First, I'm not a parent, so any speculation there would be false, as parents are guided by a lot more instinct that reason in many cases.

But, for the hypothetical, that answer is no. I watched my mother abused for several years when I was a child. She was beaten, her nose broken, her skull cracked, and often bloodied. It was a horror to behold as a six-year-old. At that time, we children had mild fantasies of killing him with such a cartoonish manner as beating his brains out with a skillet.

Over time though, I recognized codependency. Mother would not have been in that situation if she had not continued to be a victim of her own choices, her own decisions, including immorality and criminality. She would not have deserved to die for those faults, but it didn't leave her innocent either.

If my daughter had discovered her husband was abusive and stayed after the early signs that he would not change from therapy, then she would bear part of the responsibility for staying instead of leaving. Mother bore that responsibility, four times over for have four children dragged through all that. It isn't even a point of bitterness, just the facts.

If retribution were taken, it would be up for a jury to decide that. Vigilanteeism only sounds good in the abstract. Justice is for a group to weigh and decide with due process. I would certainly report a murder of any sort, including that of a pedophile. I may feel it was justified, but I am not the law. I might even take a life if I were in certain circumstances, but if I did, I'd face the justice for it, not hide like a thief (spits on the ground at the thought of thieves.)

I would have to report it.

No matter the circumstances.

Again, depending on the circumstances, but i doubt very much I could turn my daughters in. I'd likely try my best to protect them.

Do you mean if the victim were wealthy, you might overlook it?

A parent does their child no favor by covering up or looking the other way. One of the worst things that can happen to anyone is to feel they got away with something. Where there are no consequences there are only likely to be repeat crimes, no matter how minor they might seem. A teenaged child shoplifts a candy bar or they shoplift a laptop computer, a big difference in value. What is the cost to their character?

I'd wait a bit to see how high the bounty goes.

Even then, I'd have to have good solid evidence/proof that would get her hanged or put away for life. My imaginary daughter is a mean vengeful bitch. Fuckin' redheads.

/\ You'd need more than just a gut feeling, though, to be taken seriously. More than the 'suspected' bit in the piece you quoted.
No arrest or conviction might get a little messy.

No, I mean actual harm vs. the law.

If I found out my family member cheated on his or her taxes, I would not get involved.

If my relative sped when driving, I wouldn't call it in.

If my loved one stole property, I'd probably require it be returned and leave it up to the mercy of the theft victim to be merciful or not.

If my child wrote on someone's fence or wall, I'd again make them go to the owner and be contrite and restore the damaged article fully, and to do additional service if the owner chose not to prosecute.

If my relative hit and run when driving, I'd stand by while he turned himself in, or I would report it.

Those are some examples.

I've changed my mind: I wouldn't report them. #-o

It all depends.

At this point I´m inclined to believe I would choose their wellbeing over any made up law, but having said this I have only one member of my extended family has even ever been in jail in his life for two weeks.
