Here is a photo-essay of a dog's last day before he was put to sleep in order to spare his suffering from osteosarcoma. His family gave him one massive blow-out of all the things he enjoyed and used the opportunity to say goodbye properly before the vet came.

Beautiful, bittersweet. You might need a tissue or two if you've had to do this yourself.

The pics brought tears to my eyes, but in a few ways they were lucky.

My friend's Rottie had epilepsy. His last seizure was so bad he could not recover. They had to take him to the vet and he was so bad that they couldn't put him to sleep the normal way. His owner had to leave the room so they could stab him directly into the heart. He was only 5 and a half years old and the sweetest dog I ever met. Plus my friend was mad at me so I didn't get to see him for the last year of his life.

Another horrible thing are all the healthy unwanted dogs that are put to sleep at animal shelters and they spend their last days in jail basically.

Yup, saved one in January, He's the best and another July 1st. He's a sweety too. That's the limit where I live 2 dogs.

The first one (tan) I really wanted. The second one I saved because I saw he was urgent on Facebook and had been in the shelter over a month.

Aww man!!!

I remember how I lovingly put my best pal down. It was the kindest thing that I ever did. I got him when I was 11, right after my Dad died. He was my best friend who saw me through many dark days through out my childhood, my marriage and the birth of my first child, and I loved him dearly. At 18, when hip dysplasia set in, the vet said that it'd be the best thing to do for him, his breed only lived to about 12, so he was way past his best before date.

On his final day, I took him to High Park, his favourite place, and we had a quiet walk. I'm sure he sensed what was coming. I let him poke around the trees and pee where ever he wanted. When I saw that the walk was tiring him out, I knew it was time to go to the vet.

We arrived at the centre and immediately they took us into the room. There was tissue everywhere thankfully. I remember how nice everyone was to me. We put my buddy, my Sheltie, on the table and they gave me a few minutes alone with him to say good bye. I miss him terribly.

I couldn't bring myself to click on that link. I just couldn't. Hopefully, I won't have to do something like this to either one of my Labradoodles when the time comes. My heart would quite literally shatter into a million pieces.

Awww, crap.... Made me cry all over again. I had to put down my own dog a year ago. He was the best friend I ever had.

God damn it, why did I click the link! Now I am crying.

I was too long to fully understand the death of my first dog probably (I was about 7-8), but the day Merlin goes will be a truly sad one for me. The old boy is 11 now and his face is almost completely grey, but he seems healthy and I can only prey he is with us as long as possible (although maybe not when his trying to steal my dinner!).

What a beautiful story - losing a pet is like losing a member of your family - heart breaking.

three months ago, my guy suddenly collapsed and died a few minutes after we rushed him to the vet. he was almost 11 yrs old. i sobbed liked a baby when they brought his body out for us to say our last goodbyes. had him cremated and buried his ashes and our cat's ashes, who passed 2 yrs ago, and made a little memorial for them in the garden. miss them terribly. my heart goes out to those suffering from the loss of their beloved pets.
