so, back in august 2006, i came out to my mom unexpectedly, and since then, she has held onto the notion that i just need a good woman to set me normal.

well, this morning, she asks me questions about being gay, and apparently she had been reading PFLAG material all morning prior to speaking to me.

yes, i was surprised, since she's opinionated, even when told she's wrong. but this is a good small step in the right direction. ..|

Agreed - its a great step your Mom has taken it upon herself to seek out PFLAG and is at least reading their material

She'll come around

:=D:

That's great!

So did she find PFLAG on her own, or did someone send her in that direction?

Either way, it sounds like she's educating herself, and therefore coming around! (*8*)

It's really great when you find your parents defending Gays and Lesbians because they love their kids!

I caught my Dad the other day threatening to pop somebody in the mouth for telling anti-gay jokes at some function he was at! :D

Years ago, it would have been him telling the jokes!

Good news!! Hope she will continue to be open to discussions!

Thanks Brian and Centex!! (*8*)
Actually, I referred her to PFLAG's website back in august...and september...and october LOL. She cited being "too busy" to read through the website, but she and i both knew that was horsecrap. I'm not sure what finally got her to read through, but i'm glad she did.

centex, your Dad sounds awesome, that's endearing to hear.

but yes, it's definitely a step in the right direction!

and of course, thanks to you JUB-ers for providing a support system for me

That's awesome! She's starting to accept you as being gay. Pretty soon she will be telling you that you need to meet a nice guy (lol).

I'll have to check their website out. I'm really glad to hear that its helping both you and her.

Your post got me to thinking, and you reminded me of it, sometimes it's truly paramount in the coming out process to "educate" those that we come out to.

It's not enough to say, "I'm Gay." Sometimes we have to go that extra step and share educational material with those that we share with:

Parents Families and Friends of Gays And Lesbians is a great resource.

And for those who get the Bible and Scripture tossed into your face, there's this really great website to start a discussion:

God Made Me Gay.

So that good start, IMHO is the one that you made, not only when you came out but also by sharing with her that she isn't alone in her feeling/dealing with the issue! (*8*)

That's AWESOME! (!)

That's fantastic, dkonfrost! Congrats to you--and to your Mom!..|

There's not a lot of parents who eventually come around.

Standing your ground and not giving in.. ever.. is a good idea.

It shows parents that if there's any meeting to be done, it's them that has to do the work. If you even give an inch, they think they can beat the gay out of you in one way or another.

Good for you.

And her.

hey kids,

thanks for encouragement and the cool words. most appreciated!
must be part of her new year's resolution or something...regardless, it's a good small step.

yay PFLAG!

oh! i forgot, yesterday was also the FIRST time that my mom said the word, "gay" instead of "when were you like...*that*?"
