You're sleeping 11 hours a day? Is that your normal sleep amount you need?

I know what you mean. I have the same problem, especially during the summer when all of the kids are gone so work is slower.

Try to set up a routine by going to sleep before midnight every night. Do it for a month, and then it should help. After that time, you should be able to deviate a little, staying out later on weekends and such. It's difficult getting yourself to a new pattern when you've been doing something for so long.

You'll also want to try to get yourself up after 9 hours or so. We all need a good amount of sleep, but too much sleep can be just as bad for you, not to mention you're sleeping the day away!

"to bed around 4am every night and wake up around 3 pm"

awake at night and asleep during the day is not good sleeping patterns.

I have been having the same problem since I turned 18. There are better periods but usually I have a constant fight with myself. I think it is related to some deep insecurity or frustration. No good advice here :(

i go to bed at 4 and up at 10-11 during my free time. if i need to get up earlier (work) i get to bed between 0-1 and up at 7. no problems so far :)

your problems seems not being not able to sleep, it more seems to be not being able to sleep early.

something that i do if i need to adjust a sleep pattern quickly:

sleep 2-3 days in a row only 4h/night. this is the absolute minimum of sleep that your body needs. if you get sleepy earlier the next day, go to bed, but get up after 4h again (set an alarm clock). usually after two days of doing that, if not after 3 i can go to bed at like 10pm, and get up at 6am for the next few weeks or as long as i need to .. and that is quite a bit away from my "usual" sleeping times.

I'm an educator, so I'm on a summer schedule right now, and I always experience disrupted sleep patterns during the first 2-3 weeks of summer break (like right now). I find that this normally works itself out on its own, but if it doesn't I try a few things.

1. Avoid exercising too close to my projected bedtime. I find that working out in the evenings sometimes keeps me awake at night.

2. Take melatonin right before bed. This gives some people nightmares. I used to get nightmares with melatonin when I first started taking it, but I don't, anymore.

Also I find that, sometimes, my disrupted sleep at the beginning of summer break is psychological. During the rest of the year when I'm very busy, I don't have the "luxury" of wallowing in the things that make me unhappy, but during the summer, all of the things I've been repressing all year come up, and I stay up nights thinking about these things. Whew! Sounds like it's time for me to get professional help.

I'd say don't lay in bed that long trying to fall asleep. Get up and do something (not exercise) like reading and then try to go back to bed. Also, maybe try and slowly move your sleep time back.... or set an alarm clock. If you wake up at 3pm, you're not going to get to sleep again at 11:30

Try:

More exercise during the day

If you watch TV at night, turn if off earlier than usual and read before bed.

Less caffeine

Relaxation techniques: yoga/meditation

I tend to stress and obsess over a lot of little things so before bed I make a list of everything that needs to be done the next day. That way there's no point in thinking about it.

very common for young adults to have that fucked up schedule (sleep at 4, wake up past noon). most of my friends who sleep like that have a horrible diet, don't exercise much, or have psychological issues that keep them up at night.

Last summer, I started not being able to sleep. I'd go to bed around 4am every night and wake up around 3 pm. I see that the trend is repeating itself. The weird thing is this is happening during the summer time. Should I be worried about this?

I don't know about the correlation to summer, but i'm the same. Maybe you're just a nightowl?

I've always had more energy and feel happier at night. I always put it down to most of the population being asleep, not worrying about the phone ringing, or people knocking on the door, less noise and drama and stress. It's my time to just relax and do what I like in peace you know?

That and I spent a few years as a Taxi driver working from 4pm until 4-7am in the morning and i'd have trouble changing my patterns even if I wanted to. Even if I had a job starting in the morning i'd still end up staying up later and later, it's just one of those things for me, i'm used to tiredness and fatigue so i'd rather enjoy my night and deal with tomorrow when it comes. But like it's 4am where I am now and i'm almost ready to go to bed, I don't need to be up until 2pm, and then i'll probably have a meditation/doze for an hour and get ready for work, so it works well for me and I don't see the need to change.

I'm kind of the same way, actually. I personally love being up when others are normally asleep. It's far more calm, and I can relax much more. Personally, I prefer to watch movies, play on the computer (like right now :D), and listen to music (not loudly) later at night. For me, it's only bad if I have to work early in the morning (like tomorrow morning for instance. Man, am I bad! :D) I'm a big night owl.

I may not be the most qualified to offer advice, but like others have said; try adjusting your sleep patterns. After about a week hopefully they will start to kick in. Best of luck!

Ha, it's so much more fun that way :D Once a fortnight I have to get up by 7:30am and do some training for work. At first I tried getting to bed by midnight and layed awake until 6am, so stuff it now I stay up until 5 or 6 and grab a couple hours sleep or stay up and go for the long haul. Funny thing is even when I stay up for the extra day and night I still go to bed around 4am.
