I was looking around on the Hot Topics forum, and I stumbled upon JASON0980's post about his artwork:
http://www.justusboys.com/forum/showthread.php?t=251077

And I was wondering, what do you consider art? (By the way JASON0980, if you read this, I do think your piece is very nice! :-)) I was actually thinking about this for a while. Can anything be art? And in today's world, how valuable is it? I mean emotionally and intellectually, because obviously art can be worth a lot of money. Would you rather have a Thomas Kincade or a Jackson Pollock? Does talent make art?

I hate abstract art, having to EXPLAIN why your art is beautiful or that it has "hidden meaning" misses the point of art entirely, in my opinion anyway. Most people think random splashes of paint with no coherent meaning or reason are worth millions so I am obviously wrong.

There is an old saying, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." I say you might, notice I said might, say that 'Art is in the eye of the beholder." Aesthetics is not a subject in which there is general agreement.

I do allow the professional art community the guiding input in deciding what is art that is worthy of community recognition. Yet I would reserve the right to agree or disagree based on my own personal aesthetics.

Art? Good question...
Anything that had thought put into it
Anything that wasn't created with any set rules in mind

I suppose it is something that is very personal.

When a loose stack of bricks or splattered paint is considered art and sells for thousands of dollars, it makes me wonder.

Coincidentally, I was just watching a rerun of The Colbert Report (for those who don't know it, its a political humor/satire show). The topic was the "Hope" portrait of President Obama that was done using an AP photo and Colbert had as guests a copyright lawyer and the Director of th Whitney Museum in NYc. Colbert asked, "what is art? Can anything be art?" and the museum director said it is totally a question for the artist. If someone says he or she has created something original and calls it art, its art. Whether its good or not, valuable or not, are separate questions.

I hate modern art. It's a monsterous pile of shit for the most part. If you can find something beautiful about it, fair play, wire in. Bare in mind though, I still reserve the right to take the piss out ye if you do.

That aside, I consider a lot of things art, being that we have a lot of different madia for self-expression these days. Literature, films, computer games, music, painting, graphic design. Take yer pick.

I was just thinking about that when someone "attacked" hip hop by saying calling it hip hop "music", implying that hip hop isn't music. In this regard, the way I see it is exactly how you described it...all music is music. It's quality, however, it's another story...
Same goes for every type of self-expression, as Ewan called it, and well, being art.
