It's highly unlikely that someone so young, in apparent good health, will have passed any serious infection on to you. However, it's very good practice to have yourself tested every once in a while, so why not take advantage of this and request a full range of blood tests on the dime of your employer or their insurer? It's perfectly justified, and good standard health practice anyway.

I don't want to get tested because the blood touched my skin. My school nurse made it such that I could have contracted something.

I don't want to miss work to get tested.

If you're not worried, don't bother. If you are, get tested. Easy.

Some parents would insist on it, since you could just as easily have passed an infection to a child with an open wound.

If your skin is intact, you were not exposed to anything the child may have in his blood. Open wounds & mucous membranes offer a route for exposure to microorganisms that may be present in blood or other body fluids. In my professional opinion (23 yrs as a paramedic and currently a Nursing student) you do not need to be tested.

I've had kids bleed, vomit, spit and cry on me.

I'm still here and I'm still healthy.

However, in today's world, I can understand your concerns. You should get tested if you are going to continue to worry. It will remove all doubt...

I think it's such a sad indication of today's world when even a childs blood is considered a potential health risk.

For a couple of years I was involved with a non profit called MASS (Mid-Oregon Aids Support Services.) While I was helping out there we tried to start a home for kids (21 to newborn) that had HIV/Aids or were in the process of going through the tests, but highly thought to have it. We also dealt with kids that had HIV/Aids, but were not homeless, that went to public school, etc.

You should never think just because they are a kid that they are harmless. For a city this size, there were a lot of kids we tried to help. You never would have knew the three year olds we dealt with had HIV/Aids.



Get tested Piggy. You should anyways if you are active.

if your nurse or principal suggested you should be tested - do it. forget about having to take a day off of work. your health and well being are more important then if you miss a day at work.

the situation is a serious one - treat the matter as such. that's what doctors are for.

it's a precaution to take for your own well being.

Actually, is the kid ill at the first place? Contact the kid's parents if you're concerned. If he is, then you may consider getting tested. But if he's not, I don't see why.

But anyway, blood-borne diseases can only enter the body when there is an entrance (like open wounds, direct contact to soft tissues and/or mucous membranes, or substance ingestion---this one's quite rare). The only risk the disease may affect you when there is no entrance is when you don't wash out the blood and then hurt yourself, causing the disease agent to enter your body.

So if you immediately remove the blood by washing them (or even better if you apply alcohol), the risk of infection is small.

What the hell? Im so used to playing with my toddler cousins and they sometimes fall and bleed and stuff and I get their blood on me, it's no big deal at all.

I had to restrain a kindergarten today. I guess while throwing the classroom furniture, he somehow cut the palm of his left hand.

I didn't realize he was bleeding until I found my forearm covered in his blood.

I washed it off as soon as I could.

I was told I should get tested for any possible contracted diseases the kid might have.

I had no open cuts on my arm. The blood made contact with only my skin. What possible diseases could I might have contracted from this type of exposure?

Oh, for fucks sake, how precious have we become? It's a bit of blood on your skin, for pity's sake.
