A Teacher Grows Disillusioned After a "Fail" Becomes a "Pass"

Geez, and we wonder why America is getting more and more stupid as time goes on.

i know here in the houston school district, teachers get bonuses based on how successful the kids are in their classes. i see this as really good because all the really good teachers who could actually teach got the bonuses.

It's no wonder that America is behind other countries when it comes to education. Passing students who don't deserve it, is unfair to students that work hard. What will the future be like if unqualified students are allowed to pass?

Most states receive money for the number of students in attendance on a certain date (usually September 20th), not the number of students passing. This provides the state with a number to base the yearly school funding upon.

It is sad that teachers (and administration) are often put into these positions of altering grades. In my 8 years, I've never had to alter a grade, but if a student fails middle school (in my state) the parents have the right to overrule the school and enroll their child in high school, rather than having the child repeat middle school. I strongly disagree with social promotion -so what if the child is a year older than his/her classmates? Maybe that will kickstart the child into thinking about his/her education and get them back on track...

And like Ronboy, don't even get me started on the politics of No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Maybe if the fucking politicians would substitute for a teacher, they'd get a clue and let us do what's best for the kids -rather than their greedy pocketbooks! After all, the states have to pay for all this freakin testing -the feds don't provide funds for something they required states to comply with. Yet, if the state doesn't comply, the feds will yank what funds they do provide...

No its not. It annoys me that HISD does this. Teachers shouldn't get bonuses for doing they're freaking job. HISD teachers teach to the test. If you teach the objectives and curriculum, you students will pass the state exams.

Last year, the news reports numerous of HISD teachers who cheated to get they're stupid bonuses. :grrr:

Can't stand HISD.

You're a teacher. How can you expect your students to learn properly if this is the language you are teaching them?

Well, my mother is a school principal in PR, where the system is slightly different from the US.

She does not pass students that don't pass class, if a student has issues with school, they either get sent to a 'special' school, or for remidial classes elsewhere.

of course her situation is the exception, most principals do pass students along, like a conveyor belt....
