5 years old when COVID came upon us.

Nurtured with care and devotion.

Bubbly and vivacious.

A constant companion in my kitchen.

And then...betrayal.

My sourdough starter developed a black grey mould...in the fridge while waitiing to be fed and tranformed into bagels and loaves.

I tried to retreive a little, but in a day, new mold appeared.

It is like having a beloved friend die.

And go mouldy.

What is a sourdough starter?

It is the natural yeast starter used in baking bread.

Over the years, I have shared it out with friends, made hundreds of bagels, breads and pizza crusts and crackers....each sourdough takes on the characteristics of the place it is raised in and some have been going for over a century.

So I am sad that ours has had such an ignominious end....

Nothing lasts forever. I thought my blu ray player died last night. I can't afford another one right now, so I figured the only thing to do was to kill myself. Then I heard it clicking and whirring as it finally read the disc. Not a good sign, but at least we have a little bit of time together before the inevitable happens.

Did you take the disc out and blow on it?

Sounds too much like a demanding house pet. I'll pass, thanks.

It is likely to be good for your septic system. Did you flush it, or did you say a few kind words and give it a decent burial in the kitchen/herb garden?

There are all sorts of fungi proliferating with the changes occurring in the use of antibiotics and gobal warming.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Maybe you can capture a new yeast and start a new biga.

And this is why I stick with ordinary DVD players... Those are always available at Goodwill, cheap--sometimes even color tag clearance cheap!

Plus the library only has DVDs, not any Blu-ray discs, for checkout...

Is that an offer? :p

I'm far too obsessive over film to make do with DVD, especially since both major studios and small boutique labels are putting out beautiful restorations of my favorites. It didn't help that my first player was a gift. Now there are many titles that aren't even being released on DVD and I can't abide by that.
