A tip when applying for jobs

another tip: if you are going to use the same cover letter to apply for several jobs, make damn sure you change all instances of the company name. i forgot that once
!oops!

Another tip >> Make sure you put down a LOCAL phone number. /facepalm.

Back when I was assistant manager for Dollar Tree, I had this one guy come in, and hand me his application. He started talking about himself, then asked me to put in a good word for him (which, given that I had only known him for 15 seconds, was an epic fail on his part... :rotflmao:).

I looked at the application after he left. Now, given that I once worked for a mail-order bakery, if you give me a phone number area code, I can pretty much tell what part of the country you're talking about. This joker had wrote on his app, a 713 phone number. The problem >> 713 is Houston - over 300 miles away from here! #-o

If it weren't for the fact that we were required to keep all applications that are turned in to us on file whether we hire the person or not, I'd have crumpled it up and thrown it in the trash.

^ It could have been a cell phone number that he kept when he moved.

If you write your birth date in your CV, don't use the function in text processors that automatically inserts today's date.

I saw that on another guy's CV once. He was born in 2000.

@hotatlboi >> That might have worked, had I asked my cashier on duty that night about him, when she came back from her break. She knew him from way back, and explicitly said "Do. Not. Hire. Him."

Turns out the cashier said that he stayed in and out of trouble, and had quite a rap sheet - another lie on his app - the "convicted of a felony?" question.

As for the phone number, he could have either told me that he had a Houston cell phone number, or he could have written it on his app that it was a cell phone number. He did neither.

How would they know?

I'd attached my resume with my full name on it and my email address has my full name on it as well.

Why would someone put his or her birthdate on his or her CV?

^I don't know about others countries, but it's illegal here to ask someone their age on on a job interview. So, I'm with you, why would you even include it.

In case it was unclear (and it probably was) I sent them an email and at the end I signed it with my last name, but made a typo. My name was correctly spelled on my resume and in the email address itself.

Don't include hundreds of companies in the email address recipient list for all to see.

be confident and dont be afraid to ask questions. you are interviewing the place of work just as much as they are interviewing you.

Be clean shaven for the interview.

And then get on your knees and BEG for the job! j/k

BCC baby!

Not so fast!

Do not write generic cover letters that omit the position and company. You must personalize and address each letter properly. Also, ensure that the body of your letter answers the requirements. If possible, obtain the name of the person who will be reviewing your application and include it in the letter.

Clean shaven is not necessary, but beards and nails must be trim. I know someone who would judge people by the state of their finger nails.
